Bringing Analytic Theory Back to the Big Tent of Psy-
chology: Division 39’s Meeting at The American Psy-
chological Association’s Annual Conference in DC,
August 4-7th
It is our pleasure to welcome you to Washington
DC for APA’s 119th Annual Conference. Appreciation of
diversity is not only fundamental to psychoanalytic think-
ing, but it is also the focus of this year’s conference. This
summer we are bringing analytic theory back into the big
tent of psychology by bringing diverse Divisions within
APA together. Never before has our division co-sponsored
presentations with the division of social psychology and
we are proud and excited to foster dialogues between
psychologists studying psychoanalytic concepts in
different ways. On Friday night, we have partnered with
Division 8 (social psychology) to bring two esteemed
psychologists to APA who have written extensively on
attachment theory, emotion regulation, and trauma (Friday
4-5:50) Dr. Mario Mikulincer is Professor of Psychology
and Dean of the New School of Psychology at the
Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzlyia, Israel. He is a
Fellow of the American Psychological Society and the
Society for Personality and Social Psychology. Dr.
Mikulincer is an associate editor for the Journal of
Personality and Social Psychology (Division 8) and has written hundreds of papers and co-authored books that
include Attachment in Adulthood: Structure, Dynamics,
and Change and Dynamics of Romantic Love:
Attachment, Caregiving, and Sex. Dr. Jurist is a Professor
of Psychology and Director of the Ph.D. Program in
Clinical Psychology at the City University of New York.
Dr. Jurist is the Editor of Psychoanalytic Psychology
(our Division 39 journal) and has co-authored many books
including Mind to Mind: Infant Research, Neuroscience,
and Psychoanalysis and Affect Regulation, Mentalization
and the Development of the Self. Drs. Mikulincer and
Jurist will address the impact of trauma on emotion regulation and the implications for clinical treatment.
On Saturday (10 – 11:50), we again partner with
Division 8 to discuss the analytic concept of transference
with leaders in the field. Drs. Susan Andersen (Division
8), Charles Gelso (Division 17 & 29), and Ken Levy
(Division1 2 & 29) will address current research and
theory on transference that bridges social cognitive
research and contemporary psychotherapy treatment
interventions.
In addition to these invited presentations, we
have our well-attended live clinical supervision session (Saturday 9-10:50), an innovative panel led by Dr.
Huprich and Dr. Bornstein addressing the DSM-V and
psychodynamic theory, research, and practice (Thursday 1
-2:50), and a conversation hour addressing the integration
of analytic psychotherapy and EMDR (Saturday 8 -8:50).
This year, we also have a premier movie screening and
discussion of Revolutions of the Night: the Enigma of
Henry Darger (Saturday 2-3:50).

And yet, there is more. In addition to the many
presentations in the convention center, we have several
wonderful papers that will be presented in our hospitality
suite, committee meetings and social gatherings for those
in different sections (ie. Section VIII will have a conversation hour on Couples/Families Saturday 12-2),
and a poster session with many exciting empirically based
papers from graduate students and senior clinicians/
researchers (Friday 11-12:50).
We hope that you will join us this summer and
enjoy the many wonderful presentations and clinical
training opportunities we have planned for you.
Warm regards from your DC chairs,
