Task DescriptionMammals have teeth that are specifically adapted to allow them to eat specific types of foods.For this task, you will investigate different tooth adaptations shown by carnivores andherbivores. You will be given a chart showing how the incisors, canines, and molars arespecially adapted to each food source. Then you will use this information to identify severalskulls as either herbivore or carnivore skulls. After the investigation, you will answerquestions about the task.

MATERIALSYou will need the Tooth Chart and the Skulls of Unknown Animals sheet showing pictures ofdifferent animal skulls.

DIRECTIONSIn this task, you will investigate how the teeth of different mammals are adapted to the typesof food they eat. You will use the Tooth Chart to identify the skulls on the pictures. Before youbegin, use your scissors to carefully cut apart the rectangular pictures of the skulls from theSkulls of Unknown Animals sheet on page 15 and lay them out on your desk.

Louisiana Agriculture

Strawberries are sweet red fruits that Louisiana farmers sell to many otherstates. Ponchatoula is called the Strawberry Capital. The Strawberry Festival isheld in Ponchatoula each year.

Sweet potatoes are potatoes that grow underground like a root. They arealso called yams. Opelousas is the Yam Capital. The Yambilee is a festivalcelebrated each year in Opelousas.

Sugar cane does not grow from a seed but instead from a cane stalkplanted in the ground. After the tall, thin stalk is harvested, it is refined intosugar and syrup. Sugar cane grows well in the area near New Iberia. TheSugar Cane Festival is held in New Iberia each year.

Rice is also grown in Louisiana. The fields must be flooded for the rice togrow. The Rice Festival is held in Crowley each year.
