Today’s reading offers significant message: Jesus’ first sign at the wedding at Cana is reminiscent of the

messianic nuptial banquet that was envisioned by Israel’s

prophets and Jewish expectations. That the first of the signs occurs in a context of a need, with which he responds by bringing abundance and joy, signifies that his mission is one that will bring wholeness, life and joy to the world. In the liturgical context of three ‘epiphanies’ (the visit of the Magi, the baptism at the River Jordan, and the wedding at Cana), this gospel reading reaffirms our belief in Jesus as the messiah, the Son of the living God.

La lectura de hoy nos presenta una idea importante:

La primera señal o signo de Jesús en las bodas de Cana trae a mente la imagen del banquete nupcial mesiánico previsto por los profetas de Israel and expectativas judías. Que el primer de los signos ocurre en un contexto de necesidad, con que Jesús responde trayendo abundancia y gozo, significa que su misión es una que traerá integridad, bienestar, vida y gozo al mundo. En el contexto litúrgico de las tres ‘epifanías’ (la visita de los magos, el bautismo en el rio Jordán, y la boda en Cana), esta lectura evangélica reafirma nuestra creencia en Jesús como el mesías, el Hijo de Dios vivo.

Brief commentary Comentario

There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”And Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.”Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from— although the servers who had drawn the water knew — the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

Among the most evocative biblical images of the relationship between God and is people Israel is that of the groom and the bride. The image was used by prophets such as Jeremiah and Hosea to speak of the faithful love of the Yahweh for his often unfaithful spouse Israel who were joined by a sacred covenant. Later the theme of the messianic wedding banquet became an image that envisioned the awaited moment in which Yahweh and Israel would finally celebrate the feast of their marriage in the fulfillment of abundance and joy. In today’s gospel we find a third ‘epiphany’ in a series of epiphanies, which included the revelation to the nations represented by the magi, the epiphany of Jesus’ unique filial relationship to God at the Jordan River, and today at Cana of Galilee as Jesus “manifested” his identity and mission to his disciples as the one who in a wedding banquet brings messianic abundance and joy, and by ‘saving the best wine for last’ announcing the inauguration of the final era, the messianic age. Unlike the three Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, the Gospel of John refers to Jesus’ miracles not as ‘deeds of power’, but as semeion (signs). These events are extraordinary and revelatory, and point to God’s goodness and power acting in Jesus. In John’s highly symbol-rich gospel the miracle of transforming water into wine stands as the first of seven signs that reveal Jesus’ true identity, the meaning of his life and the mission that he will accomplish. They astonish and affect; and each paves the way for the ultimate sign when, in the language of John’s gospel, Jesus’ “hour” arrives and he is “lifted up” on the cross to be revealed and “draw all people to himself.” The miracle at the wedding, the first of the signs, also reveals to us someone who listens to requests and responds to needs bringing abundance and joy even when these seem to run out. In addition, the sacramental meaning of this sign would also be significant to John’s community. The Eucharist is an act of transformation, but also transforms those who partake of it. And to stress the importance of this event, the writer of the Fourth Gospel does not miss the opportunity to tell us that the “mother of Jesus was there.” Mary’s role among the first Christian communities must have been significant for the gospel writers to place her in such momentous occasions as Jesus’ first teaching in the Temple, his first sign, at his crucifixion and at Pentecost. Her few, but carefully chosen words in this gospel, are words of concern for a potentially embarrassed family, and the other is a clear and resolute exhortation to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” Mary’s concern for the needs of others, her bold trust in her son despite his seeming reluctance, as well as her command to obedience, makes this story stand as one of the more significant snapshots of her participation in the ministry of Jesus. This image of Mary has consoled and inspired Christians throughout the centuries. Married couples and families should take special note of this text that celebrates the exalted dignity of marriage, most particularly as marriages and families face struggles and challenges both from within themselves and from society. Finally, the result of Jesus’ first sign is that “his disciples believed in him.” Belief is the beginning of faith, because invites entrusting oneself boldly to God and toward a resolute commitment to doing the will of God. Like in the gospel account, Mary says to Jesus’ disciples everywhere and of every age, “Do whatever he tells you.”

En aquel tiempo, había una boda en Caná de Galilea, y la madre de Jesús estaba allí. Jesús y sus discípulos estaban también invitados a la boda. Faltó el vino, y la madre de Jesús le dijo: "No les queda vino." Jesús le contestó: "Mujer, déjame, todavía no ha llegado mi hora." Su madre dijo a los sirvientes: "Haced lo que él diga." Así, en Cana de Galilea Jesús comenzó sus signos, manifestó su gloria, y creció la fe de sus discípulos en él.

Entre las imágenes bíblicas más evocativas de la relación entre Dios y su pueblo Israel es la de las bodas del novio y su novia. La imagen fue empleada por profetas como Jeremías y Oseas para hablar sobre el amor fiel de Yahve por su pueblo Israel que con frecuencia le era infiel y a su sagrada alianza. Subsecuentemente el tema del banquete nupcial mesiánicas surgió como imagen que visualizaba el momento esperado en que Yahve y Israel llegarían a celebrar su unión en la culminación de abundancia y gozo. Aun más, el sentido sacramental de este signo hubiese sido significativo para la comunidad de Juan. La eucaristía es un acto de transformación, pero también transforma a los que participan de ella. Y para enfatizar la importancia de este evento, el autor del Cuarto Evangelio no pierde la oportunidad de decirnos que “la madre de Jesús estaba allí.” El papel de María entre las primeras comunidades cristianas tenía que haber sido significativo para que los evangelistas la hubiesen reconocido en tan transcendentes y decisivos ocasiones como la de la primera enseñanza de Jesús en el Templo, su primer signo, su crucifixión y en Pentecostés. Finalmente, el resultado del primer signo de Jesús fue que “sus discípulos creyeron en el.” La creencia es el principio de la fe, porque invita a que nos encomendemos audazmente a Dios y tomemos un compromiso resoluto en cumplir su voluntad. Como la narración del evangelio, María les dice a todos discípulos en todo el mundo y en toda época, “Hagan lo que él les diga.”

¿En búsqueda de una relación mas íntima con El Señor? ¡Inscríbase en los Talleres de Oración y Vida! El viernes 29 de enero de 2016 a las 10:00 a.m. y 7:00 p.m. se iniciarán los Talleres de Oración y Vida en el Centro Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, 11691 NW 25th St, Doral, FL 33172, Salon # 6 . Este Taller le llevará a través de las Escrituras y diversas formas de oración, ayudándole a desarrollar una íntima relación con El Señor, convirtiéndose Jesús en su mejor amigo.
