Following her first turn as a movie leadin the recent melodrama “Miss Bala,” Ro-driguez reflects, “If I am blessed enoughto continue to act and to do it in spaceslike the ones Jennie has created for me, Iwould be a very, very lucky human being.So, we’ll see what life holds.

“I’ll keep working hard and we’ll seehow my journey opens up,” adds Ro-driguez, “but I definitely want to keep act-ing. I do want to create opportunities forothers that means a lot to me and (afterdoing so on three ‘Jane’ episodes and alsoon ‘Charmed’) definitely to direct.”

are Bayonne.We began with the Native Americans. Then came the Europeans, the Africans, the Latin

Americans, the Middle Easterners, the South Asians, and the East Asians. We are Bayonne.We eat pizza, kielbasa, pasta, stuffed grape leaves, kugel, rice, beans, chicken, and Ju-

dicke’s sprinkled doughnuts. We are Bayonne.We have seen George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, Sargent

Shriver, and Eamon DeValera come to our town. We are Bayonne.We have given the world the first rock band, diners, petroleum, castor oil, Maidenform

bras, Elco PT Boats, silent movies, and pickles. We are Bayonne. We shovel snow in the winter, collect leaves in the autumn, plant trees in the spring, and

cut grass in the summer. We are Bayonne.We are the hometown of George R.R. Martin, Chuck Wepner, Joe Borowski, Rich Dimler,

Sandra Dee, Frank Langella, Tammy Blanchard, Barney Frank, and Steve Roberts. ShaquilleO’Neal lived here and Ed McMahon, too. We are Bayonne.

We played stickball with a spaldeen. We sat on the front stoop. We slid down the slidingpond. We skated on the Killy Pond. We are Bayonne.

We had a coal port. We had a Navy base that became an Army base. We have a cruiseport and the Coast Guard. We are Bayonne.

We started two-way police radios and walkie-talkies. We are Bayonne.

We had dairy farms, made wooden boats, and dug for clams. Now wetake Light Rail, post on Facebook, and eat at Asian restaurants. We areBayonne.

We are a strong breeze from Newark Bay, the swift current of the KillVan Kull, and the salt air from New York Bay. We are Bayonne.

We hear train whistles in the night, boat horns by day, and airplanesfrom Newark Airport. We are Bayonne.

We are baseball, football, basketball, soccer, rugby, cricket, and swim-ming. We are Bayonne.

We have cats, dogs, sycamore trees, squirrels, crabs, Canada geese, and numerous kindsof birds. We are Bayonne.

We are the church bake sale, Oneg Shabbat at the temple, and the Ramadan celebration.We are Bayonne.

We have the PAL, the Jewish Community Center, the Bayonne Family Community Center,and the Knights of Columbus. We are Bayonne.

We have the Bayonne Bridge, the Turnpike’s Newark Bay Bridge, and the 63rd StreetRailroad Bridge. We are Bayonne.

We have Avenues A through J. We had Avenues K through W. There are streets that areyet to be. We are Bayonne.

Spring has sprung – time to revamp the menuIn case you missed it spring arrived last week, bringing with it the anticipation of warmer

weather, increased daylight, decreased heating bills and more time outdoors.For the home chef, it also means turning over the family menu to include lighter fare,

including more fruits and vegetables – and preferably not of the root variety. So if you’relooking for some new ideas and flavors, just turn on your laptop and check out these videosand recipes from the Food Network website.

Spring means fresher vegetables and fruits as produce increasingly comes from localsources. In “Spring Produce Guide” (www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/packages/springpro-duce-guide), viewers will find a bounty of information, such as Alex Guarnaschelli’s how-to’s on selecting it, cooking with herbs and uses for spring greens. There are also plenty ofrecipes, such as Rachael Ray’s green salad with strawberry balsamic vinaigrette, Anne Bur-rell’s strawberryrhubarb crisp, and Ted Allen’s primavera with prosciutto, asparagus andcarrots. Yum!

If you’re looking ahead to planning a spring dinner party or cookout, Food’s “Spring En-tertaining Guide” (www.foodnetwork.com/holidays-and-parties/packages/spring-entertain-ing-guide) has plenty of ideas for dishes that are sure to impress your guests. The offeringsrange from Giada de Laurentiis’ beet and goat cheese arugula salad and Tyler Florence’s“ultimate” paella to Ina Garten’s spring green risotto and the mascarpone and lemon gnoc-chi, a joint Garten/de Laurentiis production. There is even a section for drinks and cocktails,

which include the cucumber-gin spritzer, the sparkling sidecar (orange liqueur, cognac and lemon juice) and the cool rhuby cordial, made withfrozen strawberries, rhubarb, cognac, ice cream and vodka. Decadent and delicious.

During the week, you’ll undoubtedly want to spruce up the nightly selection as well, and the section titled “Spring Weeknight Dinners” (www.food-network.com/in-seasonnow/packages/weeknight-dinners-spring) has ideas to do just that. Here, you’ll find entries such as Melissa d’Arabian’s orzowith thyme and lemon zest, de Laurentiis’ selection of six spring salads, Sunny Anderson’s ground chicken chicken tacos with creamy salsa, d’Arabian’ssalmon cakes and Burrell’s grilled salmon with herb and Meyer lemon compound butter. All dishes created with the working person in mind.
