WHAT IS AIR FORCE ROTC?
Air Force ROTC (AFROTC) is a college program designed to train and develop cadets for a commission as an officer in the United States Air Force. In AFROTC, you will be a student first, striving to earn your degree, but you will also be a ROTC cadet developing leadership skills necessary to be an AF officer. Upon completion of your academic degree and AFROTC requirements, you will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
As an AFROTC cadet, you study the degree of your choice. Regardless of whether it is engineering or music, you can participate as a cadet in AFROTC. This distinction as a cadet will require you to participate in variety of activities alongside your college classes. One of which is a college level class, Aerospace Studies, where you will learn all about the Air Force and how it operates. You will also participate in physical training activities with other cadets and a leadership laboratory. At leadership lab, you will learn and develop the necessary skills to become a leader in both your personal and military classes. The first two years in the program, you will participate as a General Military Cadet (GMC) and must be selected for Field Training during your sophomore year. To continue in the AFROTC program after your sophomore year, you must attend and graduate Field Training during the summer and gain entrance into the Professional Officer Corps (POC). Held at Maxwell Air Force Base, AL each year, Field Training hones the skills you have learned over the past two years and allows you to practice those skills in a simulated environment. Upon completion of Field Training, you will enter the POC and will lead and train the GMC.
