Dear Holy Name Family,
We are currently in the season of Ordinary Time. The Church,
in her wisdom, gives us seasons by which to order our year,
and this me is no less important than other seasons in the
liturgical calendar. The United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops explains Ordinary Time in this way:
Christmas Time and Easter Time highlight the central mysteries of the Paschal Mystery, namely, the incarna‐
on, death on the cross, resurrec on, and ascension of Jesus Christ, and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The Sundays and weeks of Ordinary Time, on the other hand, take us through the life of Christ. This is the me of conversion. This is living the life of Christ.
Ordinary Time is a me for growth and matura on, a me in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history un l all things are finally caught up in Christ.
I think some mes as Catholics we take for granted this very important season of the Church. The use of the word ordi‐nary may be par ally to blame for this. In Church lingo, however, "ordinary" is anything but. It is rooted in the word "order" which is one of the most beau ful aspects of our Catholic tradition, and something missing in most other areas of the culture. Dominick Albano in his ar cle, "The Ul mate Guide to Ordinary Time," states:
Just like everyday life, there is a rhythm to the days and the weeks [in the life of the Church]. Sure, we have holidays and special occasions that we look forward to that change the pace, just like we have holy days and feasts in the Church year. But those special occasions aren’t the whole picture.
The liturgical color associated with Ordinary Time is green. I heard a priest once explain the use of this color by saying, "Green means go!" We spend Advent and Lent introspectively examining our lives in the context of our need for mercy, and the way in which God works to reunite us with Himself. We stop and reflect during these seasons, realizing it is only by the ac on of our God that we are saved. Then we bask in the celebra on of his victory at Christmas and Easter, the Ascen‐sion and Pentecost.
It is during Ordinary Time that we put our joy at having been redeemed into ac on; in a methodical and ordered way, the Church walks us through the teachings of Jesus so that we understand our role in building up the Body of Christ. We can't just sit on our laurels. We must now get to work.
You may have no ced the last several Sunday Gospels have focused in on the virtue of faith. We have been told that the faith of a mustard seed can move mountains; that although the waves are crashing over our boat, we should not fear, and this week, we see the hemorrhaging woman demonstrate how Jesus can so dras cally change our lives if we have courage enough to reach out and just touch the hem of his garment.
I think he focuses on faith during the first part of Ordinary Time because he knows we need to be reassured that we are not alone in this journey. It is so easy to fall into doubt. We encounter a roadblock in our faith journey, and we cry out, "Lord, don't you care that we are drowning?" He does care. He just showed us by his passion, death, and resurrec on, but we of li le faith, go right back to fearing the waves.
Fear not, friends. He is with us, and he wants us to do great things for him. We must use this "ordinary" me to listen intently to the Gospel readings. He is speaking to us, giving us a roadmap for how to live an extraordinary life in an otherwise disordered world. Will we listen?
Let us together glorify Christ’s Holy Name, Monica Aguilar Director of Pastoral Ministries
JULY 4th NEWS:
As we observe the upcoming Fourth of July holiday and to support the gathering of families throughout the afternoon and evening, we will not be offering the usual 5:30pm Sunday Mass on July 4th.
We do invite you and your family to attend one of the many other Masses throughout the weekend as we give thanks to God on our Nation's Inde-pendence Day. Thank you for your understanding.
Pastor’s Perspective Brothers and sisters,
I am blessed to serve with a hardworking staff who works tirelessly for the good of our parish community.
This week I have asked Monica Aguilar, Director of Pastoral Ministries, to offer a reflection. Thank you for
reading it and for being a member of our flock. — Fr. Erik Esparza
Dominick Albano,
en su artículo “The Ultimate Guide to Ordinary Time (La mejor
tenemos días feriados y ocasiones especiales y espera‐
No teman, hermanos.
a escuchar?
Glorifiquemos juntos el Santo Nombre de Cristo,
Monica Aguilar

FEAST OF FAITH
Preparation of the Gifts
The altar is prepared, the gifts
are received. Several brief rites
follow with accompanying pray-
ers, some prayed silently by the
priest and deacon and others
said aloud. We call this part of
the Mass the “preparation.”
What kind of preparation is
happening?
First, the presider holds up the
paten or bowl containing the
hosts, and says words that Jesus
must have said many times, since
they derive from ancient Jewish
meal prayers: “Blessed are you,
Lord God of all creation!”
We have brought forward our
gifts, our offering to God, and
now we acknowledge that they
are not really ours — the gifts
that we give are God’s gift to us.
It is “through your goodness”
that we have gifts to offer.
It is significant that we offer not
wheat and grapes, but bread and
wine; “fruit of the earth and work
of human hands.” Bread and wine
are both God’s work, and ours.
These preparatory rites also
prepare us for what we are
about to do in the Eucharist, a
mystery in which divine and
human meet; a holy collabora-
tion in which our action is
caught up into God’s divine plan. Corinna Laughlin, © J. S. Paluch Co.

FIESTA DE LA FE
Pan
