Saint Joseph Church Mission Statement

We have been called together as disciples of the Lord as St. Joseph Parish. We are united with brothers and sisters far and near in the

message and mission of Jesus Christ. As a parish family we will witness to God’s love and presence through our celebration of the sacraments, the proclamation of

God’s Word , the formation of all into discipleship and our service to others.

We are a people who are deeply Eucharistic which strengthens us for the mission that has been entrusted to us. We will use all of the God-given gifts to show that we are eager to welcome the

stranger, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and comfort the bereaved.

June 16, 2019 Page 4THIS IS THE HOLY TRINITY

Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity, one of the most confounding mysteries of our faith. Through this mystery we experience our relationship to God: Creator, Savior, and Holy Spirit. This relationship is not easy to understand or to describe. It does not become clearer through analysis. Its complexity mirrors the complexity of all our relationships. We understand our relationships with our spouses, our chil-dren, our parents, and our friends only through daily give-and-take, annual rituals, and the life-changing moments we share. We understand our relationships only as we live them. The relationships we have with those we love, and who love us, sustain us through an uncertain and difficult life. This is the Holy Trinity. What is striking about today’s readings is that each is incomplete. What they do offer is a description of a moment in our relationship, a memory of a time and an event when our relationship made sense even though that sense may be beyond our ability to describe fully. Often that is all that our faith offers, that is, a memory of what is possible, what is promised, what has been given. A memory of eternity, of love beyond understanding is to be cherished and nurtured even if not fully understood. This is the Holy Trinity.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The wisdom of God played on the sur-face of God’s earth, finding delight in the human race (Proverbs 8:22-31). Psalm — O Lord, our God, how wonderful you name in all the earth! (Psalm 8). Second Reading — The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:1-15). Gospel — The Spirit of truth will guide you to all truth (John 16:12-15).

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 2 Cor 6:1-10; Ps 98:1, 2b, 3-4; Mt 5:38-42 Tuesday: 2 Cor 8:1-9; Ps 146:2, 5-9a; Mt 5:43-48 Wednesday: 2 Cor 9:6-11; Ps 112:1bc-4, 9; Mt 6:1-6, 16-18 Thursday: 2 Cor 11:1-11; Ps 111:1b-4, 7-8; Mt 6:7-15 Friday: 2 Cor 11:18, 21-30; Ps 34:2-7; Mt 6:19-23 Saturday: 2 Cor 12:1-10; Ps 34:8-13; Mt 6:24-34 Sunday: Gn 14:18-20; Ps 110:1-4; 1 Cor 11:23-26; Lk 9:11b-17

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: The Most Holy Trinity; Father’s Day; Julian Calendar Pentecost Monday: Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time Wednesday: St. Romuald Friday: St. Aloysius Gonzaga; Summer begins Saturday: St. Paulinus of Nola; Ss. John Fisher and Thomas More; Blessed Virgin Mary

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: 2 Cor 6:1-10; Sal 98 (97):1, 2b, 3-4; Mt 5:38-42 Martes: 2 Cor 8:1-9; Sal 146 (145):2, 5-9a; Mt 5:43-48 Miércoles: 2 Cor 9:6-11; Sal 112 (111):1bc-4, 9; Mt 6:1-6, 16-18 Jueves: 2 Cor 11:1-11; Sal 111 (110):1b-4, 7-8; Mt 6:7-15 Viernes: 2 Cor 11:18, 21-30; Sal 34 (33):2-7; Mt 6:19-23 Sábado: 2 Cor 12:1-10; Sal 34 (33):8-13; Mt 6:24-34 Domingo: Gn 14:18-20; Sal 110 (109):1-4; 1 Cor 11:23-26; Lc 9:11b-17

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s feast, extending a dimension of Easter joy into Ordinary Time, reminds us that every aspect of wor-ship centers on the mystery of God in three persons. At baptism, we are initiated into Christ and the Spirit. The Creed we recite at Mass every Sunday has its roots in the ancient celebration of baptism, when a new believer was questioned at the edge of the waters of the font with three questions: Do you believe in God, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit? Three questions, three affirmations, three immersions into the saving waters. Because every liturgy abounds with references to the Trinity, not only in words but in blessings by the sign of the cross, this feast was not easily accepted into the calendar. Pope Alexander in the eleventh century remarked that the lit-urgy is so laden with praise of the Trinity that there was no need for a special feast. Two hundred years later, while in exile in France, Pope John XXII proclaimed the feast, but it was not until 1911 that Pope St. Pius X gave it status as a solemnity. A favorite image in art for today is the Icon of the Trinity, showing three glorious winged men seated at a table laden with bread and a cup of wine. It recalls Abra-ham’s hospitality to angels and gives expression to the inner life of God, a life lived in relationship, a life poured out in abundance whenever Christians gather at the table of the Eucharist to give praise to the Father, in Christ, in the embrace of the Spirit.

Equal Exchange Coffee This weekend, we are selling Equal Ex-change coffee and tea in the cafeteria after each Mass. Your purchases help to support small farmers in Central America, Africa, and Asia, who are guaranteed a fair price to help them support their families. Please join Public Discipleship at St. Joseph’s by buying your coffee and tea here. Coffee lovers have affirmed hundreds of times that this is good coffee. And – great chocolate is also avail-able.
