STAND FIRM IN THE LORD It is not hard to imagine, in this age of wars, evil groups bent on the destruction of humanity, and political follies, that the words of Saint Paul were so accurate, even for his time. It seems that the world never changes. Paul says, “Many . . . conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is their destruction . . . Their minds are occupied with earthly things” (Philippians 3:18, 19). The result is the destruction of innocent people and of the Earth itself. But Paul says to the Philippians, “our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a sav-ior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (3:20). He will “change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body” (3:21). Note that he says “body” rather than “bodies.” He is talk-ing about the whole community of believers, who, follow-ing the example of Jesus and of Paul, will come into the glory of God. So “stand firm in the Lord” (4:1).

MANTENTE FIRME EN EL SEÑOR No es difícil imaginar, en esta época de guerras, que grupos malvados tiendan a la destrucción de la huma-nidad y locuras políticas, que las palabras de san Pablo fueron tan precisas, aún para el tiempo en que vivió. Pare-ciera que el mundo nunca cambia. Pablo dice “muchos se comportan como enemigos de la cruz de Cristo. Para los que piensan en cosas terrenas, su destino es la perdición. . . (Filipenses 3: 18, 19). El resultado es la destrucción de personas inocentes y del planeta mismo. Pero Pablo dice a los filipenses: “somos ciudadanos del cielo, de donde es-peramos como salvador a Jesucristo el Señor” (3:20). TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La Cuaresma nos llama a la conversión, a la cual de-beríamos estar dedicados todo el año. En muchas parro-quias latinas la Cuaresma también es tiempo de misiones. De niño recuerdo haber participado cada año en las misio-nes de mi parroquia. Escuchábamos a los predicadores con curiosidad, ya que aparecían solo una vez al año y luego se regresaban a lugares lejanos y desconocidos. Nunca imagine que algún día yo también estuviera como predicador de misiones. Me gustaría darles un resumen del mensaje que he sembrado en varias parroquias. Las misiones no son para repetir doctrina, sino para evangelizar a los bautizados. Con cinco temas se puede evangelizar a los bautizados recordándoles los cinco pun-tos claves del Evangelio cristiano: 1) Dios nos ama y nos hizo para él; 2) Nosotros hemos pecado y sufrimos las consecuencias; 3) Dios nos manda a su Hijo para librar-nos del mal; 4) Jesús desea formar parte de nuestras vidas personales, ¡invitémoslo! y 5) Jesús llena nuestro corazón con el poder y la presencia de su Espíritu. Este mensaje es uno de conversión y esperanza.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By now, many may have failed in Lenten disci-pline to some measure or another: the daily doughnut is simply too alluring, or a furtive puff on a cigarette irresistible. There is meaning even in the failure, though, a kind of reminder that we cannot save our-selves. Part of the power of Lent is that we do it to-gether, and although individuals decide on different ways to keep it, it is fundamentally the same journey. We fall, we get up, we keep moving. The desire to “give something up” for Lent is an age‑old impulse in the Christian heart. We get better at it over the years, and move more deeply into the meaning and message of acts of sacrifice; so there is no shame in stumbling, as long as we are not discouraged by the failure and give up. We are clearing space in our lives, after all, and some of the things we desire to give up are worth rooting out completely anyway. What do we do with the space we have cleared out by our sacrifice? The Lenten question of giving up is balanced by the Easter question of our response to Christ’s embrace of us in love: “What are you taking on for Easter?”
Saint Joseph’s HNS meets every 2nd Sunday of the month at 8:00 Mass and invites all church members to attend meetings immediately following Mass in the school cafeteria. Refreshments will be served!

PASTOR’S DESK—ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR
The story of the Transfiguration of Jesus in the Luke’s Gospel this week is similar to the ones in Matthew and Mark. One difference I noticed in Luke’s version is that Jesus does not tell the three disciples to keep it secret. It seems they decided on their own not to tell anyone. Maybe Luke knew that Jesus had asked them to keep quiet, but wanted to show that the disciples were not about to tell what they had seen and heard. Why not? One reason may be that the experience was so per-sonal and overwhelming that they didn’t have the words to express it fully. All three Gospels men-tion white clothing and Matthew says that Jesus’ face shone like the sun (17:2). Perhaps they could not look at Jesus directly without hurting their eyes. It brings to mind the Old Testament idea that if you looked at the face of God, you would die. So the disciples may not have wanted to talk about what they could not understand. The other reason may be what they heard. While Matthew and Mark just say that Jesus spoke with Moses and Elijah, Luke is more specific: They “spoke of his exodus that he was going to accom-plish in Jerusalem” (9:31). Jesus had just said that he would suffer, die, and be raised from the dead in Luke 9:22. It was bad enough that Jesus was telling them this. They probably hoped he was just telling them the worst that could happen, not what really would happen. So hearing it from Moses and Elijah as well as from Jesus was too much for them. This is where we come in. The apostles were afraid to face the coming passion and death of Je-sus. I think we are like them in that we suffer more in anticipating what would hurt us than we do go-ing through it. Our fears are often worse than the reality. That is where faith can help. In faith, we hear Jesus tell us not to fear, as he often told his disciples. We know that Jesus suffered on the cross, so he knows what suffering is. And faith tells us that he is with us even when the suffering is the result of our own sins. After all, he himself suffered because of our sins. So have faith!
La historia de la Transfiguración de Jesús en el Evangelio de Lucas esta semana es similar a la de Mateo y Marcos. Una razón puede ser que la experiencia fue tan personal y abrumadora que no tuvieron las palabras para expresarla plenamente. Los tres evangelios mencionan la vestimenta blanca y Mateo dice que el rostro de Jesús brillaba como el sol (17: 2). Quizás no podrían mirar a Jesús direc-tamente sin lastimar sus ojos. Me recuerda la idea del Antiguo Testamento de que si miraras el ros-tro de Dios, morirías. Así que los discípulos pueden no haber querido hablar sobre lo que no podían entender. La otra razón puede ser lo que escucharon. Mien-tras que Mateo y Marcos solo dicen que Jesús habló con Moisés y Elías, Lucas es más es-pecífico: "Ellos hablaron de su éxodo que iba a realizar en Jerusalén" (9:31). Jesús acababa de decir que sufriría, moriría y sería resucitado de los muertos en Lucas 9:22. Ya era bastante malo que Jesús les estuviera diciendo esto. Probablemente esperaban que él solo les estuviera diciendo lo peor que podía pasar, no lo que realmente suced-ería. Así que escucharlo de Moisés y Elías, así como de Jesús, fue demasiado para ellos. Aquí es donde entramos nosotros. Los apóstoles temían enfrentar la pasión y muerte venidera de Jesús. Creo que somos como ellos en el sentido de que sufrimos más al anticiparnos a lo que nos perjudicaría que a nosotros. Nuestros temores son a menudo peores que la realidad. Ahí es donde la fe puede ayudar. En la fe, escuchamos a Jesús decirnos que no temamos, como solía decirle a sus discípulos. Sabemos que Jesús sufrió en la cruz, entonces él sabe qué es el sufrimiento. Y la fe nos dice que él está con nosotros incluso cuando el sufrimiento es el resultado de nuestros propios pecados. Después de todo, él mismo su-frió por nuestros pecados. ¡Así que ten fe!
