GOD FORGIVES

The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.” After forty years of wan-dering in the desert, this hard-headed people have finally reached the Promised Land. No more do they eat the manna in the desert, but they partake of the fruits of their new homeland. God has kept the promise to their parents in Egypt. Even though they were a sinful people, many times questioning God and even worshiping false gods, God has forgiven them and fulfilled the promise. The “take-away” for us is that there is no sin that is unforgiv-able. We may have offended our neighbors, given a bad example to someone, even worshiped the false gods of money and power. But God is a merciful God, true to the words spoken to us. God forgives all and calls us back to love.

DIOS PERDONA

Quizá hayamos ofendido a nuestro prójimo, da-do mal ejemplo a alguien, incluso adorado a falsos dioses como dios dinero, dios poder.

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Is 65:17-21; Sal 30 (29):2, 4-6, 11-13b; Jn 4:43-54 Martes: Ez 47:1-9, 12; Sal 46 (45):2-3, 5-6, 8-9; Jn 5:1-16 Miércoles: Is 49:8-15; Sal 145 (144):8-9, 13cd-14, 17-18; Jn 5:17-30 Jueves: Ex 32:7-14; Sal 106 (105):19-23; Jn 5:31-47 Viernes: Sab 2:1a, 12-22; Sal 34 (33):17-21, 23; Jn 7:1-2, 10, 25-30 Sábado: Jer 11:18-20; Sal 7:2-3, 9bc-12; Jn 7:40-53 Domingo: Is 43:16-21; Sal 126 (125):1-6; Fil 3:8-14; Jn 8:1-11 Lecturas alternativas (Año A): Ez 37:12-14; Sal 130:1-8; Rom 8:8-11; Jn 11:1-45 [3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45]

Gracias a Dios, ¡somos cristianos!

Whoever is in Christ

is a new creation.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, “Laetare Sunday,” breaks the somberness of Lent for a little rejoicing, and the readings all summon us to an awareness of reconciliation. One of the best-loved stories of our tradition is today’s Gospel story of the run-away son and the prodigal father. Prodigal, of course, is an adjective meaning “spendthrift or extravagant to a degree bordering on recklessness,” and although the boy maxes out the credit cards, it is really the father who is prodigal with forgiveness. Part of the excitement of this Laetare Sunday is rooted in the ancient catechumenate. Long ago, midway through Lent, the “elect” were focusing more and more on the gift of reconciliation accomplished for them by Christ and about to be realized in the Easter sacraments they were preparing to celebrate. In some places, the elect were even bedecked with roses on this day. A per-son bedecked with roses sticks out in a crowd; a person formed by the Eucharist and committed to living a life of reconciliation does, too. That’s you!

Saint Joseph’s HNS meets every 2nd Sunday of the month at 8:00 Mass and invites all church members to attend meetings immediately following Mass in the school cafeteria. Refreshments will be served!

PASTOR’S DESK—ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR

Usually the first reading is picked to go with the Gospel. This week the connection appears to be a feast. The book of Joshua tells of the Israelites com-ing into the Promised Land, where they no longer needed to be fed with manna as in the desert. They had been wandering much longer than expected be-cause of their unfaithfulness. But now they are for-given, and so celebrate the Passover with food from the land. Then we hear the Gospel parable about another feast. This one is also a celebration of for-giveness, for the prodigal son has returned to his father, and the father’s forgiveness shows us how willing God is to forgive us. That’s where we end the parable, right? Wrong. The parable continues with the older son’s complaint about a feast for his brother. Did you no-tice the words of the father that “everything I have is yours” (Luke 15:31)? He’s not just being senti-mental because they are family. The younger brother had already taken his inheritance, so what-ever was left will one day go to the older one. That son cannot forgive his brother and is angry at the father for welcoming the prodigal back. This is where we come in. Most of us have no trouble asking God’s forgive-ness. But we may have trouble forgiving others. We are so used to thinking in terms of justice that we are not satisfied with forgiveness. When I have been hurt, I feel like hitting back. When you see an action movie, you don’t want the bad guy to give up and say he’s sorry—you expect him to be destroyed by the good guy, hopefully in a big fight or a spectacu-lar explosion. (Superheroes, however, almost never kill the bad guy.) So we have to ask ourselves whose idea of justice we live by. Is it the human expectation of an eye for an eye? Or is it God’s justice, which is mercy and forgiveness? When someone cuts you off in traffic, do you feel like fighting back, or offering forgive-ness? The Golden Rule could be “Forgive others as you would be forgiven.” Jesus gave his life for the sins of the world. Do we have the right to ask for more?
