What the speaker must do with the speech

Good morning everybody. I am here to inform you of my choice for the Learning Journey for our class. As your class chairperson, I have given much thought before standing here before you. I think the best choice for us is to visit the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Learning Centre. If we do so, we will be able to learn about and appreciate Singapore’s history, as well as develop a sense of national pride.

Page 16: 1127 paper 1 post mortem and marker’s report for prelim 2 examinations

Why the YOG Learning Centre? I think you will agree with me that Singapore is proud as a nation to be holding the inaugural Youth Olympic Games between 14 and 26 August this year. This is a once-in-a-lifetime privilege for all Singaporeans, especially for youths like us. We want to show the world what we can offer to the youths from every shore of the Earth.

What the speaker must do with the speech

Why the The Fort Canning Battle Box? I think you will agree with me that The Battle of Singapore was one of the most memorable battles to be fought between the British and the Japanese in World World Two. This is our opportunity to relive that moment of excitement, to experience the historic moment that had decided the fate of Singapore when the British eventually had to surrender our island to the Japanese invaders.

Page 20: 1127 paper 1 post mortem and marker’s report for prelim 2 examinations

What the speaker must do with the speech

On our learning journey, I am told that the actors will re-create the underground Battle Box used by the British forces during Second World War.

They will demonstrate how military operation was controlled and monitored by the British.

The historic situation will present the last few days before Singapore fell to the Japanese in 1942.

We will learn that war is inherently destructive; it can only be avoided if we have the will to build a deterrent force strong enough to prevent others from attacking us.

What the speaker must do with the speech

Good morning everybody. I am here to inform you of my choice for the Learning Journey for our class. As your class chairperson, I have given much thought before standing here before you. I think the best choice for us is to visit The Singapore Mint. If we do so, we will be able to learn about and appreciate Singapore’s history, as well as develop a sense of national pride.

Page 22: 1127 paper 1 post mortem and marker’s report for prelim 2 examinations

What the speaker must do with the speech

Why the Singapore Mint? I bet many of us didn’t know that when Singapore first became an independent country in 1965, we didn’t have any currency to call our own. However, over the decades, we have evolved and we certainly have currency coins and notes which we can be truly proud of. The Singapore Mint is the place to visit if we want to learn about how our currency coins and notes came about and what further plans are there ahead. This is a special privilege for all Singaporeans because the Singapore Mint is a restricted place which does not usually admit visitors.

Page 23: 1127 paper 1 post mortem and marker’s report for prelim 2 examinations

What the speaker must do with the speech

Our learning journey, we will learn about how Singapore developed from a nation without its own currency to one of the first in the world moving towards electronic cash.

Through the ancient coins used in Singapore from the 19th century

to present day, we will receive a glimpse of Singapore’s historical, economic, cultural and political progress.

We will also learn about the technologies involved in manufacturing

coins At the mint, we will be able to take a good look at exhibits which also
