OUR TRADITION

This week in Sweden, a Catholic martyr from Sicily is the most beloved figure. Saint Lucy is celebrated on December 13. The long-story- short is that Lucy was a Christian whose father wanted to marry her off to a pagan fellow, and

she rejected her father’s authority. To make an example of her, her father had her killed. In the course of the brutal martyrdom, Lucy lost her beautiful eyes, but her vision was miraculously restored. So this patroness of light and clear vision is revered on the shortest, darkest days of the Nordic winter. Before the reform of the Gregorian calendar in the sixteenth century, December 13 was the winter solstice.

On December 13 young girls in Sweden appear in the morning wearing lighted candles (tokens of the fire that refused to harm the saint) on their crowned heads, and serve sweet rolls and coffee to everyone in the house. For the Swedes, the “Lucias” are a sign of everyone’s yearning for more light in this world.

Muchos conocemos la historia de la Virgen de Guadalupe en el Tepeyac, pero ignoramos que en Extremadura, España ya había una imagen de la Virgen con el nombre de Guadalupe. En 1252, la Virgen se le apareció al campesino Gil Cordero pidiéndole que trajera a los sacerdotes del pueblo para que escarbaran al lado del Guadalupe (río escondido). Al hacerlo, encontraron una pequeña estatua morena de la misma Virgen. Esta imagen, según la documentación enterrada con ella, la cual también relata su origen, fue escondida durante el ataque de los moros en el año 711.

Había sido un regalo del Papa Gregorio Magno al obispo de Sevilla después de que había resultado milagrosa. Su primer milagro fue el salvar al pueblo romano de una plaga en el año 591. Cuando la llevaron en procesión alrededor del castillo papal se apareció un arcángel que luego terminó la plaga.

Esta misma imagen fue un regalo al Papa Pelagio II traída de Constantinopla donde había sido trasladada con los restos del evangelista san Lucas en el siglo IV. Estaba con los restos de este santo porque él mismo la había esculpido en el primer siglo.

SIMBANG GABI IN KENTUCKY On Friday, December 16, 2016, at 6:00 PM, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz will celebrate Louisville’s annual Simbang Gabi (Christmas Novena Mass) at Saint Margaret Mary Church in Louisville (across Oxmoor Mall). Fr. Noel F. Zamora will concelebrate. Merienda or snacks will follow at the Parish Hall.

On Sunday, December 18, 2016, at 3:00 PM, Fr. Noel F. Zamora will celebrate Lexington’s annual Simbang Gabi (Christmas Novena Mass) at Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary Church.Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv. will be preaching. This Filipino Advent Mass will be celebrated in Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines.

Everyone is invited to share this Filipino tradition with our Filipino-American community. Merienda or snacks will follow at the Mary, Queen Gym. Filipino attire is encouraged.

In the success the Parish had with “Discovering Christ” earlier this year, attendees completed a survey with the following answers to the question of what did you like most about Discovering Christ: the number one answer was the bonding and sharing of each ones personal experiences and struggles. Other comments were the fellowship and conversation, became a family, getting to know fellow Parishioners.

If these are some of the feelings you would like to have, here is a potential answer. We are now preparing for the next session called “Following Christ”. It takes a deeper step into what Catholics can do to “know” Christ better. Our slogan last year and continuing into this new one is a quote from Pope Francis: “Whenever we do something together; something good, something beautiful, everyone changes—all of us change in some way-and this does us good.”

While more details will follow in later bulletins, the key takeaway for “Following Christ” is a path to grow in our relationship with the Lord Jesus. By the grace of God this is accomplished by praying together, teaching and supporting one another in taking up some of the basic disciplines and truths that have been practiced by Christians from the time of the early Church.

Thus, if you feel you need to get closer to our Lord, this journey of “Following Christ” could be the answer.

Sister Missionaries of Charity New Home in Lexington

The Catholic Diocese of Lexington and the Catholic Action Center are pleased to welcome the Sister Missionaries of Charity to the City of Lexington. The Missionaries of Charity, founded by Saint Teresa of Calcutta, have served in this diocese since 1982 in Jenkins, Kentucky. The Sisters will continue to maintain a residence and provide a monthly outreach service in Jenkins. In Lexington, the Sisters will live in the Cardinal Valley area and provide direct ministry to female patients recuperating from hospitalization as part of a new initiative of the Catholic Action Center.

The Diocese of Lexington is richly blessed to have the sisters, who live a simple life among the poor modeled after their founder. The Sisters are planning to inaugurate their new home on December 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Project

When you come home from the hospital it can be a stressful time and the last thing on your mind is cooking food. As a parish family we can step up and help.

Would you be interested in being a part of a group of parishioners that cook food and deliver it to the parishioner when they come home from the hospital? The goal is to have at least four (4) groups of four (4) to six (6) people to purchase and prepare food at their home. The cost of the food would be your responsibility not the parish. The more parishioners we have involved means more groups. Each group would need a lead person to be the contact for the coordinator. The lead person would be responsible for contacting the members of their group and organizing the menu. If there are dietary restrictions the coordinator would let the leader of the group know.

If you are interested in being a part of this please project, either contact Rosa Browning at 734-2117 or call the parish office at 734-4270 and let them know. If there is enough interest, someone will contact with more details. Thank you in advance.

Journey of Hope Separated

and/or Divorce Ministry

Journey of Hope is an unique 15-week divorce recovery ministry program addressing concerns of divorced or separated Catholics. It offers support on important issues that result from divorce. The emphasis on prayer, scripture, and the teachings of the Catholic Church lead to healing and a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.

The next 15-week session begins at The Cathedral of Christ the King, 299 Colony Blvd, Parish Life Center (downstairs – to the left of the Cathedral Main Entrances) on Wednesday January 11, 2017 and ends of April 19, 2017 with a closing Mass. Times are from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Cost $50/includes materials, text & workbook. Scholarships available.

Catholic Way Bible Study (CWBS) Spring Semester Are YOU looking for a New Year’s resolution you can SUCCESSFULLY complete in 2017? How about joining a well-rounded and solid Catholic Bible Study? Three groups meet weekly from Sept. through April with holiday breaks. Study includes discussion and lecture of Scripture. Participants prepare for discussion by daily Bible reading, study, and weekly lessons, then break open that study through lecture.

Thursday morning beginning January 12, at the Cathedral of Christ the King, 299 Colony Blvd., Hehman Hall from 9:45-11:00 AM? This semester’s study is “The Letter to the Hebrews.”

Thursday evening, beginning January 5th in the Cathedral of Christ the King Parish Life Center room A from 7-9 PM. This group will continue with the “Book of Revelation” and it’s OK if you weren’t at the beginning. We have ways to “catch you up.” Baby-sitting available.
