The majority of the photographs date from the first two decades of the twentieth century and are from a series by J. Dearden Holmes, a London photographer working for Cavenders Ltd., of London. Cavenders Ltd. was a cigarette company that issued miniature stereograph cards in cigarette packages. Holmes’ photographs represented in this collection are a part of Holmes’ United States tour, believed to have been sponsored by Sunbeam Tours, Ltd. The donor retains the originals of the five stereographs and has provided digital reproductions for the collection. Programs for the Lucas Theater in 1922 include advertisements for local businesses as well as theatrical programming information. A 1911 soil map illustrates the development of Chatham County in the early 20 th century. Other documents included in this collection are news articles on the Savannah waterfront fire of 1935 and a parade welcoming troops home in 1918. There is also a lottery ticket from the Greene and Pulaski Monument issued December 12, 1846. An artifact is also included in this collection, which is a small souvenir mirror from the Savannah Bank and Trust Company. Postcards There are over 600 postcards collected by Palumbo ranging from the early 1880s to 1989, with a couple of items dating from 2020. They span the development of postcards from the Pioneer era through the Real Photographic era, and include primarily images of historically important buildings, streets, and scenes in downtown Savannah, Georgia. A few notable exceptions are one with a handstitched pattern on the front in the shape of a ship, and several displaying photographs of cats as ship mascots, noted for having made stops in the Port of Savannah. The Palumbo collection of Savannah-area materials includes both original and reproductions of

visual materials depicting Savannah and the surrounding area. The materials were collected by

Nick Palumbo, Savannah resident, City of Savannah alderman, and former president of the

Ardsley Park/Chatham Crescent Neighborhood Association. The collection is arranged by format

and the items were donated in periodic installments from 2016-2021.

Stereographs and Photographs

The collection includes five stereograph cards (digital reproductions only) and thirty-nine

photographs. Major themes within these include Savannah streetscapes, squares, monuments, and

port activities. The collection also contains images of African Americans in Guyton, Georgia.
