What you need: one pair of look-out binoculars from craft (can be done without the binoculars if needed)

What you do: Have the children sit in a group on the floor. Choose one child to “spy” first. Give them the look-out binoculars and tell them to look around the room and spy one thing in the class. The rest of the children will close their eyes while the one child is looking. When he has chosen something, the children will open their eyes and begin asking questions to determine the chosen object. The questions can only be answered by “yes” or “no” responses. The child who guesses gets to have the next turn with the binoculars.

What you say: Today in our story we learned about Balaam and his donkey. Which of them had look-out eyes? Look-out eyes help us to see trouble and go the other way. When might you need look-out eyes?

What you need: anything within the classroom that can be used to create the obstacle course (i.e. chairs, tables, etc.)

What you do: Assemble an obstacle course for the children using chairs, tables, or anything available. Make the children go around chairs, over chairs, under tables, etc. Demonstrate the course for the children and tell them they are going to pretend to be donkeys while they go through the course. Allow the children to go through a few times. Periodically a leader can stand blocking the course just as the angel did in the story.

What you say: Today in our story we learned about Balaam and his donkey. Which of them had look-out eyes? Look-out eyes help us to see trouble and go the other way. When might you need look-out eyes?

What you need: large picture of donkey, white paper circles (2” diameter), black marker, tape, blindfold

What you do: Draw a simple picture of a donkey on a white board or butcher paper. Add a black dot to the center of each white circle. Give each child an eye with tape attached. Blindfold the child and guide them to the donkey. Have them tape the eye to the donkey. Let each child play at least twice.

What you say: Today in our story we learned about Balaam and his donkey. Which of them had look-out eyes? We added look-out eyes to our donkey today, didn’t we? Look-out eyes help us to see trouble and go the other way. When might you need look-out eyes?

Look-out BinocularsSupplies: toilet paper tubes (2 per child) yarn (2’ length per child) hole punch tape or stapler markers

Option #2 – DONKEY OBSTACLE COURSE

Option #3 – PIN THE EYES ON THE DONKEY Directions:

1. Give each child two toilet paper tubes. Allow them to color them with the markers.

2. While the children are coloring, the leaders can punch a hole into the top edge of each tube.

3. Staple or tape the tubes together. Tie the yarn onto the glasses so the children can wear them around their necks.
