The “Supreme Court” By Dub McClish
Article III, Section 1, of the Constitution of the United States, names the Supreme Court as the ultimate judi-cial power of our nation. Some of its rulings have cru-cially affected the moral foundation and direction of our nation.
On January 22, 1973, in Roe v. Wade, the Court ruled that women had the constitutional right to choose to abort their unborn babies. Since that ruling, more than 57,000,000 innocent babies have been legally murdered in the U.S. alone. All who believe the Bible concerning the sanctity of life remain horri-fied at this ruling and its tragic consequences.
On June 26, 2003, the Court ruled that all laws prohibiting sodomy (homosexual activity) were un-constitutional (Lawrence v. Texas). This rul-ing reflected—and accelerated—the moral degeneration of Amer-ica and greatly advanced the cause of sodomite activists. All who believe the Bible concerning the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman and the Biblical evaluation of homosexual be-havior as “abomi-nation,” “defile-ment,” “against nature,” “unseem-
liness,” “error,” “not fitting,” and the pursuit of “strange flesh” (Lev. 18:22–24; Rom. 1:26–28; 1 Cor. 6:9–10; 1 Tim. 1:10; Jude 7) were appalled at the im-plications of this ruling. It has given credence, legali-ty, and encouragement to deviant, wicked behavior.
Fallible men operate human courts, and all such courts are therefore subject to mistakes. Injustices oc-cur; sometimes the guilty go unpunished and the in-nocent are convicted and suffer wrongly. There is a court, however, in which all wrong judgments and inequities will be corrected. Christians know that which all will some day learn: The judgments of hu-man courts are not final. 1. “Righteous art thou, O Jehovah, And upright are
thy judgments” (Psa. 119:137). 2.God “hath appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom
he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the
dead” (Acts 17:31). 3.“But when the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the angels with him, then

shall he sit on the throne of his glory: and before him shall be gathered all the nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats” (Mat. 25:31–32).

Luther Posted His Ninety-Five Theses (From Christian History Institute) On October 31, 1517 in Wit-tenberg, Germany one of the most famous events in Church history occurred. A priest named Martin Luther nailed a challenge to a debate on the church door. It consisted of ninety-five statements, or theses, against the practice of indul-gences—theses which he was willing to defend.
Indulgences at first were rare, consisted of shortening a penance imposed on a contrite sinner. They had become big business for popes, who sold them as a source of revenue. In the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries they came to be seen
as removing actual guilt. By the sixteenth century, they were hawked as covering the sins of both the living and the souls in purgatory. The common folk bought them with this under-standing.
Luther was appalled. “When our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, said ‘Repent’, He called for the entire life of believers to be one of repentance,” he wrote. “Those who preach in-dulgences are in error when they say that a man is absolved and saved from every penalty by the pope’s indulgences.”
Johann Tetzel, a notorious peddler of indulgences, coined a jingle: “As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs.” Luther ve-hemently denied this. “There is no divine authority for preach-ing that the soul flies out of the purgatory immediately the money clinks in the bottom of the chest.” The more likely effect was “avarice and greed.” Against Tetzel’s loose interpreta-tion, Luther insisted, “The pope’s pardons are not able to remove the least venial of sins
as far as their guilt is con-cerned.”
Thanks to the newly prolific printing press, copies of Luther’s theses were circulating every-where in that region within a week and generating heated discussion. For Luther, who had recently come to an understand-ing of justification by faith, in-dulgences were wrong. Christ’s blood, not money, purchased pardon from guilt. Eventually the debate resulted in a split in the church. His posting of the Ninety-five Theses has been seen ever since as marking the beginning of the Protestant Ref-ormation.
Speakers on Wednesday Please keep your messages short. Everyone has already sat through 45 minutes of class, and the families with school-age children like to get home as ear-ly as they can.
2018 Fall Seminar Finally, I have made arrange-ments with brother Ralph Gilmore to hold our seminar October 12–14, 2018 on athe-ism.
