CHALK DUST CHATTER 11th December 2018 Newsletter issue: 19
This last week has been jam packed with end of
year concerts, award ceremonies and many other
special events. It is such a busy and fun time of the
year and an opportunity to reward and showcase
the amazing talent of our school community.
Pictured here are our lovely Pre-Primary students who had their
concert yesterday. They filled the undercover area with Christmas joy
and brought huge smiles to the faces of all those who watched on.
Parents were invited back to the classrooms to enjoy class
celebrations, and share in a delicious christmas morning tea with
their families.

Lost Property
We have a number of jumpers and hats that have been left around the school over the past month that are waiting to be collected from our lost property boxes. Please check the boxes before the end of the year as they will be emptied before the commencement of 2019 with unwanted items being recycled.
Concerts and Ceremonies Thank you to everybody who came along to our end of year celebrations. We are very proud to showcase the talents and the achievements of students at the end of the year. Students and staff worked tirelessly to provided polished performances for you and we appreciate you support and feedback from these events. Congratulations to all of our students on excellent performances.
Class Lists 2019
Class lists will be displayed on the veranda on the southern side of the office building from around 2pm on Friday 1st February. Class lists will also be displayed on classroom doors at the commencement of 2019. You don’t need to check classes prior to school commencing on Monday 4th February but are welcome to do so if you like. Please do not copy or distribute class lists to respect the privacy of our families. We spend a significant amount of time working out class placements with teachers. We ask that you do not request to have students moved between classes as THIS CANNOT BE ACCOMODATED.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays
From everybody at Margaret River Primary School we would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and an enjoyable holiday season. Travel safely, take care of each other and we look forward to seeing your smiling faces back at school again in February. Thank you to our whole school community for the interest, care and commitment that you invest in our school. Best wishes to all you.
Aaron Thomas, Principal
Wishing all our families and their loved ones a fabulous Festive Season.

Our year 6 students recently celebrated the end of their
primary school years at their Graduation Party held at the
Football Club. Thankyou to the amazing group of parents,
particularly Mrs Fran Bancroft, who organised a jam packed
night of fun, including disco lights, party food, dancing and
games. It was a perfect way to end a great year.
A massive thank you to all our
wonderful volunteers whose support
makes so many programs possible
at our school! Recently we hosted a
morning tea to show our gratitude to
our volunteers, who were than treated
to a special musical performance by
our talented IMSS students.
Congratulations to our school bands and their amazing band coaches who put on a spectacular night of entertainment when they played recently at the ‘Rock the Tavern” event. It was a fabulous night of toe tapping entertainment with a great amount raised to go towards our music program. Thank you to the awesome hosts, the Settler’s Tavern team, who always support us so generously, all the parents who helped transport gear, the band coaches and of course our fabulous Music Specialist Helen Collis.

Student Health and Wellbeing MRPS Code of Conduct incorporates six core values:
Cooperation, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Flexibility, Honesty and Respect
Respect -At Margaret River Primary School, one of our core values is Respect which is just another way to say I value and
care for you and to admire someone for his or her good qualities or achievements.
You should remember the golden rule “treat everyone as you want them to treat you because what goes around comes
around.”
You show respect to others when you listen quietly, keep unkind thoughts to yourself, speak kindly to others, willingly
share and by use simple courtesies like please and thank you.
Remember, that we should fear no one, but respect everyone.”
SDERA
School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA) is a combined venture with the shared vision of providing “A safer and
healthy population of young people”.
Throughout the year there have been many articles towards assisting our children to develop skills in self-management,
self-awareness, social management and social awareness, to contribute to the development of positive, healthy
attitudes and behaviours in our children.
Resilience education gives children the opportunity to develop a range of social and emotional skills that can influence
the way they make responsible choices and decisions in an array of situations. This has the potential to enhance the
quality of their lives.
As this is the last article for the year I hope you all have a fun and safe Christmas, and remember, Santa is always
watching for who is being naughty and who is being nice!
Alcohol
As it is Christmas time and the Australian culture is about having a great time, it can also involve alcohol. While illicit
drugs are more likely to receive media coverage in Australia, alcohol is still the country’s most widely used drug. Alcohol
kills approximately 6ooo Australians per year, that’s one person every 90 minutes.
It is encouraged to discuss facts about alcohol with your children, its long- and short-term effects and consequences, its
physical effects and why it is especially dangerous for growing bodies. Encourage your children to ask questions. We
want to teach our children how to cope socially and emotionally and develop strategies to resist peer influences and
internal pressure to engage in hazardous use of alcohol. By delaying your child’s alcohol use and encouraging a negative
attitude toward “binge” drinking, you can protect your child from the likelihood of alcohol use problems.
The role of parents is essential as a support to a young person’s evolving social and emotional growth. Where young
people have an opportunity to open up a dialogue with supportive parents they can then be reassured, guided and
informed which can make a significant difference. Providing a supportive environment where issues of concern can be
discussed fosters resilience, can help young people make the choice not to use drugs, and can reduce the risk of a
problem arising. Establishing a pattern of open discussion also reassures young people that you will be there for them
even if they do end up in difficult situations.
By being active and drinking responsibly, parents can teach their kids important lessons early on.
