the Reformation of the Church

Sunday, November 1, 2020

2

Welcome to Trinity! We are so glad you’re here with us today. Have a seat, listen to the pre-service music, and prepare to encounter your God as he comes to be with you in his Word.

TRINITY’S COVID PRECAUTIONS: Trinity is holding services at 50% of our sanctuary’s capacity, Sundays at 9:00 am and Mondays at 6 pm. Please follow all current social distancing protocols when on the church grounds. Masks are required at all times inside the church and school buildings, including for the entire worship service. If you do not have a mask or for-get yours at home, we will provide one for you free of charge. If you feel ill, have a temp, coughing, chills, sore throat, headache, etc. please stay home and join us via livestream in-stead.

Holy Communion: We follow the biblical and historic practice of “closed communion.” If you are one of our guests and would like to receive Jesus’ body and blood with us in the fu-ture, please speak with our pastor. He would be delighted to help you make sure you are ready to join us.

Service Theme: The thing that made all the difference over 500 years ago for the reformers is the same thing that makes all the difference for us today. So we Stand Firm on the Gos-pel, even when we face pain and opposition because of it, because we know that it is only the gospel of grace, communicated in Scripture and received through faith, that saves us!

ORDER OF SERVICE Divine Service 1 HYMN 282 “Lord, Open Now My Heart to Hear”

Stand M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. M: God is our refuge and strength, C: An ever-present help in trouble M: Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way C: And the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, M: Though its waters roar and foam C: And the waters quake with their surging. M: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, C: The holy place where the Most High dwells. M: God is within her, she will not fall;

Office (507) 232-3938 Pastor Micah Plocher (507) 581-2618 www.trinitynicollet.org

Invocation The invocation affirms that our worship begins in the name of and directed toward the one, true, Triune God of the Bible.

Prayer before worship Lord Jesus, work through your Word today to make me bold and fearless in my commitment to you and the ministry you give to me. Amen.

C: God will help her at break of day. M: Be still, and know that I am God; C: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. A: The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to

God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

KYRIE (Lord, Have Mercy) After each verse, the cantor will sing the refrain. Each time, the congregation will repeat the refrain.

1. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart.

2. You came to call sinners. Refrain

3. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Refrain M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

Absolution In the absolu-tion, we receive God’s promise from 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins he is faithful and just, and will purify us from all unrighteous-ness.”

Kyrie Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The ex-pression, “Lord, have mercy” is one of the old-est worship responses in the Christian church.

4

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS (Glory to God) The cantor will introduce the first refrain. The congregation will join in all following refrains.

Repeat refrain

M: We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, We give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King O God, almighty Father. Refrain

M: Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, Have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. Refrain M: For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, In the glory of God the Father. Amen. Amen. Refrain

PRAYER OF THE DAY M; The Lord be with you. C: And also with you

M: Let us pray, Gracious Lord, our refuge and strength, pour out your Holy Spirit on your faith-

ful people. Keep them steadfast in your Word, protect and comfort them in all temptations, defend them against all their enemies, and bestow on the Church your saving peace; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen

Prayer of the Day Drawing from the themes in today’s Gospel reading, the Prayer of the Day asks God for mercy, blessing, and aid in living a Chris-tian life.

Gloria in Excelsis This song with roots in the 4th century pro-claims the great things God has done to rescue us from sin, death, and the devil.

FIRST LESSON Daniel 6:10-12,16-23 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home

to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help. 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”

The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.” […]

16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve con-tinually, rescue you!”

17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.

19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”

21 Daniel answered, “May the king live forever! 22 My God sent his an-gel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”

23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, be-cause he had trusted in his God.

ANTHEM: BE STRONG IN THE LORD Sung by a duet Be strong, be strong in the Lord. Be strong, be strong in the Lord. Rise up, put on the armor of God. Rise up, put on the Word of the Lord. In ev’rything, praise his name, gladly proclaim, In ev’rything, praise his name, gladly proclaim, Be strong, be strong in the Lord. Be strong, be strong in the Lord.

Scripture Readings

All three read-ings are themat-ically tied to the Gospel of the Day. We stand for the Gospel in order to honor our Lord.

6

Cast aside your fears and put your trust in God. Be strong, be strong in the Lord. Let all you say and do be done in truth and love. Rise up, put on the love of the Lord.. In ev’rything, praise his name, gladly proclaim, Be strong, be strong in the Lord. SECOND LESSON Galatians 5:1-6

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

2 Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circum-cised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. 3 Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. 4 You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. 5 For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

VERSE OF THE DAY M; Alleluia, “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give

you the kingdom.” Alleluia. (Luke 12:32)

GOSPEL M: The Holy Gospel is recorded by St. Matthew in chapter 10 verses 16-23

“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you,

Verse of the Day

The Verse of the Day serves to highlight one of the main themes for this Sunday of the Church Year. It also serves to prepare our hearts to receive God’s teaching in the Gospel of the Day. Tradi-tionally, the verse is sung by a cantor or choir.

7

you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

After the Gospel, the congregation sings:

NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten

of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pi-late. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his king-dom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is wor-shiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.

Amen. Be seated HYMN OF THE DAY 200 “A Mighty Fortress is Our God”

Nicene Creed Public confes-sion is faith’s response to God’s saving Word. The Nicene Creed has been con-fessed by Chris-tians since the 4th century. It proclaims the true Christian faith in the one Triune God, emphasizing the deity of Jesus. This creed is still confessed by Christians all over the world.

Hymn of the Day This hymn is chosen for its rich content and its connection to the Gospel of the Day.
