    GAME NOTES

For the second consecutive week, the Jets defense will face a top-

five rushing attack. After facing a Jacksonville team that ranked

tied for fifth, they will take on an Oakland attack that stands fourth

in the NFL in rushing yards per game (160.5) and is led by RB Dar-

ren McFadden, who ranks second in the NFL with 222 yards on 5.3

    yards per carry this season.

The Jets defense leads the NFL with five interceptions and ranksthird with seven take-aways. Four different players (Cromartie-2,

Mauga-1, Revis-1 and Smith-1) have recorded interceptions. The

Jets secondary returns all four starters (CB Darrelle Revis, S Jim

Leonhard, S Eric Smith/Brodney Pool and CB Antonio Cromartie)

to a defense that leads the NFL in completion percentage (51.4) and

passer rating (67.5) since Head Coach Rex Ryans arrival in 2009.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson needs one touchdown to become the

third player in NFL history to record 160 touchdowns. He would

join Hall of Famers Jerry Rice (208) and Emmitt Smith (175) as the

only players to accomplish the feat. Tomlinsons 25 career touch-

downs (22 rushing, 3 receiving) against the Raiders are the most he

has scored against any team. In addition, he has score 12 touchdownsat O.co Coliseum, the most he has scored at any stadium except for

    San Diegos Qualcomm Stadium.

This weeks game at Oakland marks the 10th time since 1999 (regu-

lar and postseason), that the Jets have made a visit to the Coli-

seum to face the Raiders. Overall, the clubs have met 11 times with

Oakland winning six of the match ups. New York has won four of

    the last five contests.

Kerley and 15-year veteran Derrick Mason. Entering the season, the trio of Burress, Holmes and Mason had recorded more yards (24,31

    2011 PRESEASON HIGHLIGHTS

    QUARTERBACK PLAY

Jets quarterbacks did not appear to have much rust, as they were sharp and efficient during the preseason. They combined for six tou

downs, while not throwing an interception. Overall, they completed 72-of-121 attempts for 742 yards, with a 93.8 passer rating. Starting Q

Mark Sanchez went 26-of-43 for 280 yards and posted a 102.8 rating while throwing for a team-high three touchdowns. Rookie QB Gr

McElroy completed 36-of-59 attempts for 335 yards, two touchdowns and a NFL rookie-best 87.9 QB rating.

    PLAXICO RETURNS

WR Plaxico Burress returned to the field for the first time in 1,001 days when he suited up against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2

the preseason. Burress wasted no time making an impact, as he caught three passes for 66 yards in the first half, including a 26-yard touc

    down pass from Sanchez.

    KERLEY SHOWS VERSATILITY

Fifth-round draft pickWR Jeremy Kerley showed he can be a jack-of-all-trades for the Jets. The rookie totaled 292 combined yards,

a receiver, returner and Wildcat quarterback. He caught six passes for 55 yards as a receiver. As a returner, he averaged 28.3 yards per k

return and 8.9 yards per punt return. In the Wildcat, Kerley completed his only pass, which went for 18 yards, and added five yards on t

    ground.

    GIVE AND TAKE

In four preseason games, the Jets posted a +6 turnover ratio, as the defense forced nine turnovers, and the offense surrendered the ball j

three times. S Jim Leonhard, who is returning from a broken leg that ended his 2010 season, led the defense with two interceptions.

    YOUTH MOVEMENT ON THE D-LINE

The Jets hope that their top two draft picks, first-round DE Muhammad Wilkerson and third-round selection NT Kenrick Ellis w

make an impact on the defensive line in 2011. The two rookies helped slow down opponents running backs, as the Jets gave up just 2.9 yar

    per carry in the preseason.

    REX RYAN

Like most sons, Rex Ryan always knew he wanted to be in the fam-

ily business. For the Ryans, the family business is stiing defense.

In 1985, his father, Buddy Ryan, led what is widely considered to

be the best defense in NFL history. Known simply as the 85 Bears,

Buddys unit allowed 12.6 points a game. For the season, they al-

    lowed 20 touchdowns (9 rushing, 10 passing and 1 on a return).

Rex has been a part of some of the NFLs best defenses himself. In2000, he served as the defensive line coach for a Baltimore Ravens

team that allowed an NFL best 10.3 points a game. In 16 games, the

    2000 Ravens allowed 18 touchdowns (5 rushing, 11 passing and 2

on returns). As a defensive coordinator in 2006, Rex matched his fa-

thers 1985 feat allowing 12.6 points a game with the Ravens. Rexs

2006 team led the NFL in 11 categories: yards per game (264.1),

yards per play (4.51), rushing yard per game (75.9), rushing yards

per play (3.31), interception rate (5.5%), sacks per pass attempt

(11.79%), rst downs per game (14.8), third-down conversions al-

lowed (28.9%), red zone pct. (33.3%) and points allowed a game

    (12.6).

In 2009, Rex returned the family business to the Jets, where his fa-

ther earned his rst NFL job. Rex took a defense that ranked 10th in

scoring for the 2008 season to the top of the NFL rankings in seven

categories: yards per game (252.3), yards per play (4.24), passing

yards a game (153.7), passing yards per play (4.91), rst downs al-

lowed (14.8), third-down conversions allowed (31.5%) and points

    allowed (14.8).

named team captains. WR Santonio Holmes, NT Sione Pouha, C

Darrelle Revis, QB Mark Sanchez and S Eric Smith will wear

Coach Ryan had this to say about his selection of captains. It w

not voted on. This is something that I chose. I chose these guys bas

on what I see on the practice field, the game field, the classroo

their leadership, what they mean to their units, the pride and ever

his passes and compiling an 84.7 passer rating.

Chad Pennington (NYJ 06-07)Schottenheimers rst season with the Jets coincided with the retu

der Schottys direction, Pennington posted a then career-best 3,3

yards passing, completing 64.5% of his passes for an 82.6 passer r

    Thomas Jones (NYJ 07-09)

Jones was considered a journeyman for the earlier part of his car

after spending his rst seven seasons in the league with three diff

ent teams. In that time, he averaged 769.1 yards and 4.9 touchdow

per season. In 2007, he was acquired by the Jets in an offseason tra

rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in 2008.

    Dustin Keller (NYJ 08-)

Keller, the Jets 2008 rst-round pick, quietly had the best rst tw

Keller led the team in receptions with 55 for 687 yards and 5 touc

Sanchez, the Jets 2009 rst-round pick, was chosen to direct Sch

tenheimers offense. Since then, Sanchez nished his sophomseason with a career-high of 3,291 yards, 17 touchdowns, 13 int

ceptions and a passer rating of 75.3, making him the second young

Jets quarterback to pass for over 3,000 yards. He is also the young

quarterback in NFL history to throw eight touchdown passes and

interceptions during the rst ve games of the season. During S

chezs two consecutive playoff runs, he led the Jets to a club reco

of four road victories, and tied the record for the most postseas

road wins in the NFL. Additionally, he tied the club record for

most postseason touchdown passes in a single game with three.

No team in the league has had more kickoff return touchdowns since Mike Westhoffs tenure with the Jets began in 2001. Since then, t

Jets have scored 14 times on kickoff returns. Perhaps even more remarkable than the fact that the Jets lead the league with 14 scores, is t

those scores have come from six different players. Leon Washington (4), Justin Miller (3), Brad Smith (3), Chad Morton (2), Jerric

Cotchery (1) and Jonathan Carter (1) have all brought a kick back for a score under Westy.

CB Darrelle Revis capped the 2010 season with his third-consec-

utive Pro Bowl selection and second-straight All-Pro nod. Widely

considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, Revis numbers

the last two seasons have illustrated why opposing quarterbacks

rarely pay a visit to Revis Island. In his two seasons under Head

Coach Rex Ryan, Revis has posted the lowest burn percentage* of

any cornerback in the league and is tied for the highest percentage ofpasses defended to times targeted as well.
