RUSSIA PARTNERSHIPSEEKS THERAPISTFORINTERNATIONAL PROJECTCRAIG JOHNSON, RUSSIA PARTNERSHIP

Are you a person who enjoys exploring

different cultures while helping those in

    need? Hennepins Russia Partnership is

looking for a person who has worked

    with children suffering from severe

disabilities to help on projects we are

    supporting in Russia.

For the last several years, the Russia

    Partnership has worked with Marilyn

Bauch, a behavioral specialist whoworks with children in Russia through a

program called the Island of Hope. She

visits Russia annually to provide services

that these children desperately need but

which they too often find lacking.

Marilyn is looking for someone toaccompany her to Russia to assist in her

work with the children. The ideal person

would be a physical or occupational

    therapist who has experience working

with young children with cerebral palsy

    and severe learning problems. Currently,

there are practically no medical or

    educational services available for these

children and parents are desperate for

help in knowing what they can do.

Travel to Russia would be required

for a 2-3 week visit, most likely in Fall2011. The Russia Partnership would be

willing to subsidize travel expenses for

this trip as well. The ideal candidate

would also be willing to consider taking

a long-term interest in this project. If

this sounds like an opportunity that

would be right for you, or if you know

of others who would be a good fit for it,

    please contact Don Forster at

    [email protected] or 952-920-5389.

    Thank you!

Progress with Hennepin Churchs 10community actions was on the Admin-istrative Council agenda May 5.

The 10 community actions, each with

a supporting set of goals, make upHennepins 2011 Ministry Plan, thecongregations priorities for the year.

Speaking to the 1st communityaction, to connect every person to aspecific part of our community, Rev.Leah Rosso outlined plans for expan-sion of the greeter and usher programs. The goal is to get more people involvedin Sunday morning hospitality. Whenenough volunteers are available, a newgroup called hosts will greet churchgoersat the doors of the Sanctuary, hand out

bulletins and help anyone who needsassistance. Ushers, who have traditionallydone that job, will continue to receiveofferings during worship and performtheir other regular duties. In addition, casual attire will now be welcome forall greeters.

Ad Council members also heard that:

groups are finding more ways to usethe screens in the Sanctuary duringworship. Anyone wanting to use

them should talk to the service planneras early as possible. The church islooking for a camera operator.

all church groups that received aprofile questionnaire have completedthem. The questionnaire askinggroups to define their purpose, constituency and needs went tocommittees and other groups earlier

this spring. The shared ministry teamwill use the information to connectindividuals with appropriate churchgroups and wants to involve othergroups that have not yet participatedin the process. Any group that meetsregularly and would welcome newmembers should contact KristynEbert, volunteerism and outreachdirector.

the Global Outreach Committee islooking for a chairperson. Anyone

interested should contact KristynEbert for more information.

the Youth Council is seeking morechaperones for either of two youthmission trips to Hibbing and theBoundary Waters this summer. Any-one interested should contact Rev.Paula Colton for more information.

the next congregational meetingwill be at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 5,followed by lunch.

Her art compassionately reflects thatwe are created equally and beautifully in Gods likeness. Ms.McKenzies painting Jesus of the People was selected winner of the NationalCatholic Reporters Jesus 2000 competition. This painting confronts stereotypicalthinking by celebrating Jesus as African American. The feminine aspect is servedby the fact that the model for this painting was a woman. Ms. McKenzie willinclude a stop at HAUMC this Sunday in conjunction with her presentations atWisdom Ways Center for Spirituality. She will be a guest at Sacred Journey at 9:00and then share works from her newest book, Holiness and the Feminine Spirit.

CHURCH FINANCE REPORTAPRIL 2011 UPDATEROD BACON, FINANCE COMMITTEE

During the first quarter of 2011 ourexpenses exceeded income by $64,000,which is about $48,000 worse thanexpected. Lower contributions comprise$44,000 of the variance, and everything

else netted to $4,000. However, thesevariations are largely anticipated to beseasonal in nature, as the Easter holidayin April and the Christmas holiday inDecember are not reflected in the Jan. 1to March 31 data.

At its April meeting, the FinanceCommittee finalized and approved the2011 budget and sent it to the Adminis-trative Council for their approval at thelatters meeting on May 5. The budgetanticipates a loss of $10,000 for the fullyear, which will be offset by prior year

surplus amounts (recall that 2010yielded a net income of $32,000).

Thank you for your feedback andinput regarding these reports. If youhave specific comments or questions,as always you may reach me by emailat [email protected].

PARKINGAS HOSPITALITYAt Hennepin, we like to reserve the

east parking lot for first-time visitors, families with young children, and peoplewho have limited mobility or needassistance. Instead of driving around theblock looking for parking every week, weencourage all people to take advantage

of the 600 spaces in the Walker ParkingRamp across the street. The ushers andfront desk receptionists have vouchersfor you to use with your parking ticket.Climate controlled, covered fromweather, and just a short walk acrossHennepin, the ramp will give you easyaccess to everything you need here atthe church. Be hospitable and selfish atthe same time: park in the ramp!

    SCHOOLOF CHRISTIAN MISSION

Once again its time to think aboutthe United Methodist Womens Schoolof Christian Mission event. Held at St.Johns University near St. Cloud, thisis a great opportunity to learn aboutmission, be in sistership with other UMwomen from around the state, and

century context of Christianity as a world-wide religion. As UM Women we willtake a look at why mission is such anintegral part of what we do.

The Journey: Forgiveness, RestorativeJustice and Reconciliation. Stories fromthe Bible are intertwined with recenthistory to illustrate the redemptivepower of forgiveness. We will learn how

individuals, families, and communitiesare called to a life-long journey ofpracticing forgiveness, justice, andreconciliation in our relational lives.

If youre new to the School of ChristianMission experience, here are someways others have described it: a timefor discovery; fun; shopping internationalcrafts that support a create cause; greatfood and fellowship; spiritual growth;cultural learning; truth-telling; explora-tion and study.

Why not invite a friend or two to joinyou this year? SCM provides a greatopportunity for a short get away to abeautiful campus where you can meetnew friends, explore your faith, andlearn about the world around you.

cookouts offered by our Food Service Committee. The Koinonia Task Force, which I chair, continues to meet monthly in an effort

    D.C.E.H. RECEIVES UNITED METHODIST GRANT

The Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist church encourageslocal churches and interfaith groups to advocate for social change related to injustice. The Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness recently received a $2000grant from this national UMC committee to support their work to advocate forpolicies that end homelessness and promote systemic economic justice! Rev. BruceRobbins and Bishop Sally Dyck provided support for the DCEH grant application.

Hennepin Church is engaged in the work of the DCEH through the Voice for

the Voiceless Committee and the involvement of staff members, Kristyn Ebert andAnn Carlson. This committee is charged with educating Hennepin members aboutpoverty and homelessness and encouraging them to participate in advocacy effortsfor just policies and programs. One example of a DCEH initiative is the Take 5table that is available on Sunday mornings during the state legislative session toencourage HAUMC members to write postcards to their legislators on a specificissue related to poverty and homelessness. Another example of partnershipbetween DCEH congregations, the Downtown Council and the state governmentis the Currie Avenue Project. In 2010, the DCEH congregations and the Down-town Council raised money to hire case managers to get homeless people intohousing. They were then able to leverage funding from the government to house150 people who had been homeless for an average of 4.7 years. Jon, a person thatwas housed through the Currie Avenue Project is an example of the work of

DCEH. After Jons wife died, he fell into a severe depression, lost his job andbecame homeless. He got into housing through the Currie Avenue Project, is nowstable and looking for a job again. Without the support of Government, congre-gations cannot address the systemic issues that contribute to homelessness andpoverty. But through people who advocate for systemic change and just policiesaffecting the poor, we can work together to eliminate homelessness and poverty.

Where might you expect to find agroup of 10- and 11-year-olds on aSaturday afternoon in April? A soccergame? A birthday party? Riding bikesaround the neighborhood? Choosing toeschew these and other tantalizingoptions, nine of Hennepins fifth graderswere busy serving at Feed My StarvingChildren in Coon Rapids on April 9,2011.

Volunteering at FMSC was one part ofthe Faith Milestone called Heart of aServant. The fifth grade Sunday schoolclass spent the prior three weeks learn-ing about world hunger and the wayswe, as Christians, are called to respond. In addition to volunteering, they wroteletters to various political leaders andbrainstormed ways they would sharewhat they learned and experienced withothers.

During the FMSC session, they and

HENNEPIN IN THEIR HEARTSJACK FISTLER, LEGACY GIVING

Each Legacy gift is a story of faith and commitment. We recentlyreceived wonderful unrestricted estate gifts from Leonard and EleanorBagne. They were married at Hennepin in 1941, lived and worked in Minneapolis, and were members here until retiring in 1973 and moving to the Crosby/Brainerdarea. Even though they last attended here nearly 40 years ago, the Bagnes keptHennepin in their estate plans. As their nephew recalled, they always had a warmplace in their hearts for Hennepin, and kept the church in their estate plans allthose years.

Legacy donors share a common bond of faith and community that is HennepinChurch.

Your legacy gift, regardless of size, can help enrich the Hennepin experience forfuture generations. Contact Jack Fistler, Director of Legacy Giving, (612) 435-1321or [email protected] to discuss your gift planning.
