Standards

• A1.1.6 Simplify numerical expressions, including those involving radicals and absolute value.

Page 3: 1.1. Standards A1.1.6 Simplify numerical expressions, including those involving radicals and absolute value

What does it mean?

Evaluating is a type of simplifying. It is where you turn it into a single, numerical answer.

EXAMPLE:Evaluate for x when x=3

X+ 9 ----------------- (3) + (9) = 12

Page 4: 1.1. Standards A1.1.6 Simplify numerical expressions, including those involving radicals and absolute value

Substitution

• If all variables are given a value, we can solve

+ y

Y = 2*2*

Bases and Exponents

32

BaseExponent

Multiply your base BY ITSELF the amount of the exponent.

3 * 3 = 9

Squared

Side 1

Side 2

Side * Side = Side2

Let’s say each side is 3 ft

3*3 = 9

Now, INCLUDE UNITS

9 ft2 or 9 square feet

Side * Side * Side = Side3

Let’s say each side is 2 cm

2*2*2 = 8

Now, INCLUDE UNITS

8 ft3 or 8 cubic cm

So just remember…….

If something is “squared”

It’s 2-d….to the SECOND power

3 squared = 32

If something is “cubed”

It’s 3-d….to the third power

3 cubed = 33

Exponent

• If you have an exponent to a parenthesis, do what is in the parenthesis first. THEN use that as your base.
