HORIZON 2020 EUROPEAN UNION FUNDING FOR RESEARCH & INNOVATION
NANOfutures ETIP as a driver for Smart Specialisation
Smart Specialisation Strategy: RIS3
10
• RIS3 is a novel approach to regional economic and social development promoted by the EU
• Designed to address issues of economic
competitiveness and social cohesion as outlined in Europe 2020 strategy
• Its goal is to boost regional innovation in order to achieve economic growth and prosperity, by enabling regions to focus on their strengths
• Smart specialisation involves a process of developing a vision, identifying competitive advantage, setting strategic priorities and making use of smart policies to maximise the knowledge-based development potential of any region, strong or weak, high-tech or low-tech. http://s3platform.jrc.ec.europa.eu/home

nologies/pdf/analysis_of_RIS3_in_NMP.pdf
11
ETPs may have an important role in promoting interactions
between stakeholders and translating regions’ potential:
realizing the goals of RIS3 in scaling-up processes from
regional to national and international levels.
Smart Specialisation and ETPs
ETPs are industry-led stakeholders fora that develop short to long-term
research and innovation agendas and roadmaps for
action at EU and national level to be supported by both private and
public funding
Contributing to the definition of the research priorities including those under the Research Framework Programmes
ETPs are key elements in the European innovation ecosystem. They develop strategies and business-focused analysis of
research and innovation bottlenecks and opportunities related to societal challenges
and industrial leadership actions
They can mobilise industry and other stakeholders to work in partnership, share information, enable knowledge transfer and deliver on agreed priorities.

NANOfutures: ROADMAPs
2012 2015
A value chain approach was adopted in order to contribute to bridge the current gap between nanotechnology knowledge and successful commercialization of nano-enabled products
NANOfutures: VALUE CHAINS
PULL: Availability of technological facilities, pilot line and globally competitive manufacturing facilities;
PUSH: outcomes of technological research, availability of outstanding industrial consortia and competitive manufacturing.
NANOfutures: VALUE CHAINS
The Value Chain concept used in NANOfutures is related with the complex work that connect Knowledge to Market, but also Design to Product and link together Growth and Sustainability. Three layers of the value chain were considered. All the steps necessary to arrive at the product have to be considered together.
15
NANOfutures: VALUE CHAINS
Market-driven Value Chains
VC1 Nano and micro printing for industrial
manufacturing
VC2 Nano-enabled, depollutant and self-
cleaning surfaces
VC3 Manufacturing of powders made of
functional alloys, ceramics and intermetallics
VC4 Lightweight multifunctional materials and
composites for transportation
technical and non-technical actions at short, medium and long term specific business modelling plans for pilot line facilities
