Knoxville thrives as a scenic city in the heart ofTennessee’s Resource Valley. Its natural beauty con-tributes to the overall flavor, charm and hospitalityfound throughout the city. With its four gentle sea-sons, Knoxville provides a year-round destination fortravelers from across the country.

The Knoxville metropolitan area is frequentlycited in national surveys as a quality place to live. With the University of Tennessee calling Knoxvillehome, there is a vast array of cultural and education-al opportunities available. Affordable housing, healthcare costs below the national average, a low crimerate and a pleasant climate are all factors which makeKnoxville an attractive place to live and work.

With a metropolitan area population of more than650,000, Knoxville is nestled in a land of breathtak-ing beauty with the Great Smoky Mountains, thecountry’s most-visited national park just minutesaway, and gentle rolling valleys and shimmeringlakes at nearly every turn.

The city is headquarters to the Tennessee ValleyAuthority, the nation’s largest public utility, and ishome to the main campus of the University ofTennessee with a student population of 25,000.Knoxville is the third largest city in the state andlargest in East Tennessee.

From May to October 1982, the city hosted aWorld’s Fair in the Lower Second Creek Valley thatattracted visitors from all over the world and markedKnoxville’s emergence as a major city.

Knoxville is surrounded by the world-famous OakRidge National Laboratory and three national parks, one of which is the magnificent Great SmokyMountains.

Within a short drive of Knoxville are theCumberland Gap National Historic Park, the nation’slargest national historic park, the Big South ForkNational River and Recreation Area, the Obed Wildand Scenic River and the Andrew Johnson NationalHistoric Site in nearby Greeneville.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park isapproximately 40 miles southeast of downtown, onthe border of Tennessee and North Carolina.

With more than 520,000 acres, the Great SmokyMountains National Park encompasses over 800miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding; 735miles of streams for fishing; many developed andback country campsites; spectacular scenery andviews from 13 peaks over 6,000 feet, of whichClingman’s Dome is the largest at 6,643 feet; and isa park which has more than 100 native species oftrees and 30 total non-native species, more than in allof Europe.

The National Park Service is in charge of preserv-ing 77 historic structures in five historic districts:Cade’s Cove, Mountain Farm Museum, RoaringFork, Cataloochee and Noah-Bud Ogle.

Due to Knoxville’s convenient location, the travel-er can easily spend a day in the mountains or raft awhitewater river and still enjoy an evening on thetown.

Knoxville is located in the geographical center ofthe eastern United States and is within a day’s drive

of half the nation’s population. The city is located atthe crossroads of two major interstates, north-south I-75 and east-west I-40, in the center of the easternregion of Tennessee.

Knoxville’s McGhee-Tyson Airport, located southof the city, serves the middle East Tennessee regionwith more than 100 flights daily on 11 different air-lines. The airport has finished renovation of the ter-minal and construction of a new concourse system. This $50 million project was completed in 2000.

Knoxville’s history began with the CherokeeIndians, the area’s first inhabitants. In the late 18thcentury, James White brought his family over themountains from North Carolina to claim land givento him for his service in the American Revolution.

On June 1, 1796, Tennessee became a state withKnoxville as its first capital. The capital has sincemoved to Nashville, but historic Blount Mansion andJames White’s Fort are still standing among the glassand steel skyscrapers in downtown Knoxville.
