Lesson Objectives:

Concepts: Skills: Knowledge:

• Students will investigate and experiment with applying oxides to the 3D formsto enhance the surface decoration in texture and colour and have anunderstanding its technical terminology.

• Students will become aware of how the oxides react and interact with the

surfaces, its tonal value and depth of colour. Students will respect the materialand have good practice for the use in regard to health and safety forthemselves and others.

• Students will work in groups and learn how to communicate, co-operate, shareequal tasks, responsibility for the pieces and group members. Resolve anddiscuss any technical issue through problem solving skills.

Teacher Activities:1. Introduction: Surface decoration:

Review fired bisque pieces, Howwould you describe these forms;have the pieces changed their

appearance from the wet clayform; Are there elements of themaquette represented in thesepiece from 2D drawings/designinto 3D

2. Next stage: decorate the piecesusing an oxide. What are oxidesand where does it come from?Explain oxides (source: chemicalcompound a metal powder withwater use as a form of surfacedecoration); Health and safety

practice; issues; keeping work areaspotless and clean; grouprotation/skillshare/delegation/problem solving.

3. Demonstration: how to applyoxides i.e. brush on and wipe off on a bisque fired piece. Show ownfinished pieces as an examples of to show where too much wasapplied and sponge off. Select astudent to try out this process.

4. Importance of setting up area withall necessary tools ready and athand for each stage of task beforecommencing. (material table)

5. Group work: delegate tasks on arotate basis; each group will splitup: 2 sets of 3 students eachworking on a 3D structure (2structures per group). (worksheetwith group details; tools and tasks)

6. Tasks: brush on the oxides (1st

student); rotate and hold the

piece/timekeeper (2nd

student) andwipe off the oxides/changewater/keeping area clean (3rd

student). Rotate the roles so eachstudent has a chance to performeach task. (est. 10 min each ontask)Group 1: Vivlana; Stephanie andCiara Walsh1a: Blessing;Pallavi and CiaraO’HalloranGroup 2: Ellen; Sarah and Miriam;

Pupil Activity:Listening/observing/participating/observation drawing/discussing/discovery/problem solvingStudents involved in discussion and

demonstration.Group work: setting up work area

with tools required for each task,

delegating tasks; team work; apply

oxides; rotate piece; brush off

oxides. Keep work area clean;

water; sponges (rotate task every 10

min)

7. Review: students progressthroughout the lesson

8. Continue group workIf students finish work early, theywill help other groups in been arunner to replace water andanother student will document thisby using a camera.

9. Review: what have we learnt thislesson and what did you findenjoyable and challenging?

10.Tidy up/ volunteers to help pack upforms at a later stage during theday.

11.ConclusionNext lesson: Group researchpresentation

Take notes from discussion andpresentation for evaluation/ assessmentConclusion:

• Review: - key areas of learning and resolve design issues each lesson

• Design board: - assemble sketches/drawings ideas in groups and discuss withthe students their feedback on what they have discovered

• Next lesson: Group research presentation

Differentiation:• Visual demonstration of each tasks

• Students will be encouraged to work to their own strengths and adapt theirdesigns. A selection of materials will be available to suit all.

• Encourage students to work at their own pace and capabilities and adjustscheme to suit this.

• Use key words on whiteboard to support and map out each lesson.

Resources:

• Laptop and extension cable

• Lesson map (white board )

visual aids and presentation• IT and worksheet for group work

• Document student work and process by taking photographs using digitalcamera

• Display board for brainstorming/mind mappingOrganisation of the Room: (illustration)

• Students will be work within groups at the work stations set up.

• Area for visual presentation, design board and materials

Materials and Cleaning:

• Materials: selection of containers for oxides; cold water and old

sponges; brushes; sponges; cloth for keeping work area spotless;boards, protective cloths; kitchen paper; plastic gloves.
