Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, As this is our final newsletter for 2014, I would like to take this opportunity, to thank you all for the wonderful support you have offered the staff and myself this year. We are truly blessed to be able to work with your children and the partnership you offer. On behalf of the staff I would like to thank Sue Marro and all the Mum’s that gave their time and to all those who contributed to what was a magnificent staff appreciation lunch on Tuesday. It was wonderful to have the students from the Italian cooking club assist and have Ellie Sheeran and Oliver Hoy’s beautiful piano playing in the background - we were all thoroughly spoilt. It is always heart warming to see so many gifts under the St Joseph’s Giving Tree. It is a true testament of the generous spirit that our community is renowned for. Thank you to Sonia Ryan for coordinating once again this great initiative and to everyone who has supported it. Staffing for 2015 In the newsletter today we have included the staffing for 2015 and details of your child’s class will be included with the reports on Monday. There are a couple of changes next year that I wanted to draw your attention to. Students from Prep to Year Six will receive Italian lessons every week, Maria Falla and Josie Gleeson will share the role. Rebecca Hyde will assist Faye Forbes in the role of Wellbeing and will concentrate on the Social/Emotional Programs. Nick Bosworth will continue as ICT leader and will support the teachers and students within the classrooms as opposed to separate specialist classes. Nick will also continue as PE and classroom teacher. Georgie Carman will take

Maternity Leave at the end of the year; we wish both Georgie and her husband Aaron all the best on the birth of their second child. As mentioned last week Mrs Margaret Mitchell will be leaving at the end of the year, after four years at St. Joseph’s. We are also farewelling Mrs Beverley Webb who has been working at the school as a Learning Support Officer in a number of classrooms since the middle of the year. We wish Marg and Bev all the best for the future and thank them for the contributions they have made to the school. We are currently in the process of interviewing for a Prep teacher and look forward to welcoming the new staff member at the beginning of 2015. We will also be welcoming Kate Callinan back who will be returning from Maternity Leave. From 2015 Mrs Amanda Tamplin will be known as Ms Amanda Jackson. I wish you all a very happy, safe and holy Christmas as we wait and celebrate the birth of Christ. I look forward to welcoming Years 1-6 back on Thursday 29th January (Preps commence Friday 30th January) and to those families that are leaving St Joseph’s all the very best for the future.

The Story of a Refugee - Open Minded Portraits by 3/4TC The Day My Soup Went Boom Boom! I was making my soup when a bomb landed in it and I screamed “NOOOOOOOOO!”. I had to evacuate my home and flee my country Iraq. I was only 10 and I had to get in a boat and float away with the pot my soup was in. The boat was broken down and random people were on the boat with me, I was thinking ‘was this a good choice?’ Not long after I decided that it was as we ran into a navy boat. They sent our boat somewhere. I was wondering where we were going? We ended up on Christmas Island. I was sad that I didn’t have any family left and no soup. I was starving and dehydrated. The people there gave me food and I was so hungry I ate 3 whole chickens, 2 pigs and drank 14 cans of Fanta. I was learning how to speak English and my chair was my soup pot. I was different because I was a vegetarian and no one else was. It took one year for me to get to Australia. I wonder where my life will go next? By Samuel Run Away Bang! Why must I suffer? Why can’t I be
normal like any other child? There are
always bombs. Mother and Father are
dead. I’m all alone with my seven older
sisters but luckily I’m leaving now. I will
miss France but I have to leave. Honk,
Honk, is that the boat? This is going to be a
horrid ride, goodbye France.

A Very Bad Time
Whoosh! I feel the pain as I ride the fierce waves on a tiny boat with no food, drink or basic survival gear. I wonder why war happened here and will I survive these horrible thoughts? I feel different, scared, horrible and terrified. I think about my family still in war. I have come from Indonesia to Australia just to avoid war. My home has been destroyed and left in pieces. Running away and feeling does not feel right. When I arrive I feel a strange sense of freedom I have never known before. I wonder about my future? By Maxel Refugee All I could hear was the endless noise of guns firing, grenades exploding and children screaming. I had so much fear. My family is all gone. I ran to shore and jumped in the rusty old sailboat. It took weeks, months even years to reach our unknown destination. I couldn’t help but cry. I had nothing left, I was all alone. I arrived on the shore of a lovely country called Australia. I had little food and the thirst was killing me. I wonder what I’ll do next. I’ve made a new start in a new place. By Bella
The Day I Fled My Country It was smoking everywhere I had looked. Guns blowing, bombs exploding and people fleeing scarcely. I couldn’t believe it was happening to me. I mean why did it happen to me? I was scared, really scared since many people’s lives were in grave danger. I started to run as fast as I could and jumped in the old wooden boat with my family nervously huddled next to me. We rowed and rowed in the old boat and past many frightful storms. Many of us got sick on the way as well as being hungry and thirsty. The people on the boat rowed for days and weeks until we arrived at

Christmas Island surprised. On the island we learned many things and moved to the main land of Australia. I wonder what will happen next? By Dannah

3 Ways To Improve Your Mood And Wellbeing
Research by Barbara Fredrickson and Martin
Seligman has shown that individuals can boost
their wellbeing by improving the way in which
they view their life.
1. What Went Well?
A simple way to reframe your outlook on life is
to ask, “What went well today?” and list them.
Try to find three positives.
This also works well with others. Instead of
asking your partner, “How was your day?”
instead ask them “What went well today?”
You are helping them to frame the day in a
positive light.
And in the workplace? Too often we focus on
what’s not working at the expense of the
attention we could be placing on what is
working.
2. Write a Gratitude Letter
Think of a person who has greatly influenced
you. Perhaps they have been a source of
inspiration or support and write them a letter
of gratitude.
Research shows that gratitude is one of the
most powerful emotions when it comes to
enhancing our own wellbeing not to mention
the wellbeing of the recipient!
3. Create Positivity Portfolios
These are a collection of different stimuli that
elicit certain positive emotions. Fredrickson
says that by creating easily accessible
portfolios that encompass; Love, Joy,
Gratitude, Serenity, Interest, Hope, Pride,
Amusement, Inspiration and Awe we can
significantly boost our wellbeing.
A simple way of doing this is flicking through
your photos on your phone. The one that
makes you smile – that’s a keeper. Set up a
separate folder and put all the photos that
make you smile in that folder. This can be your
Joy Portfolio.
Another folder may be made up of photos or
videos of your family. This could be your Love
Portfolio.
What would you put in your Gratitude Portfolio? Enjoy your week,
Faye and the Wellbeing Team

Graduation and End of Year Mass Tuesday 16th December
All Welcome
Our Graduation and End of School Year Mass is taking place next Tuesday 16th December at 12.15pm at St Joseph’s
Church.
This will be a very special occasion to thank God for the friendships we have formed, celebrate our efforts and achievements at St Joseph’s in 2014 and farewell and pray for God’s continued blessing on
our Year Six students as they continue their journey of faith at Secondary school. The immediate family of our Year Six students are invited to sit with them in the reserved front pews. Our Grade Prep to Year Five students will be seated in reserved seating.
THANK YOU
I would like to take this opportunity to say
a big THANK YOU to the St Joseph’s community for your amazing support with our Social Justice program this year: PROJECT COMPASSION, VINNIE’S WINTER APPEAL, ST JOSEPH’S REFUGEE SUPPORT GROUP, FRIENDSHIP FAIR DAY – OUR SPONSOR CHILD ELLIE FROM ST JUDE’S SCHOOL TANZANIA, ST VINCENT DE PAUL GIVING TREE.
All are wonderful examples of living the Mission of Jesus and ways in which we celebrate his daily comings in our hearts and lives, in our words, actions and conversations with others at St Joseph’s
A BLESSING OF PEACE
May we be guided into the way of peace this Christmas and holiday season,
Deep peace, pure gold of the sun to you. Deep peace, pure white of the moon to
you. Deep peace, pure blue of the sky to you. Deep peace, pure green of the grass to
you. Deep peace, pure brown of the earth to
you. Deep peace, pure light of the dew to you. Deep peace of the running wave to you. Deep peace of the whispering trees to
you. Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you. Deep peace of the Son of Peace to you.
(Adapted from an Irish prayer). We praise and thank God in Jesus’ name
at Christmas, for all the blessings and gifts of this school year. Amen.
Kindest Regards, Natalie Dullard.
Religious Education Leader.

Our weekly recap Last week at after care we
got into the festive spirit
with lots of Christmas
themed activities. This
included marshmallow Christmas trees, felt
stars and gift tags.
Just a reminder that next Wednesday we will
be running an early release session from 1pm-
6pm. Even if your child normally attends after
care on a Wednesday you will still need to
book them in for this session.
Sadly this will also be Patrick’s final day with
us. We would like to invite any after care
children, past and present, to pop and say
farewell to Patrick if they wish. Kate
A note from Patrick
As you may have heard, I will be leaving at the
end of the year to take on my first teaching
role. Whilst I am very excited about completing
my studies and taking on this position, it is
also with great sadness that I leave the St
Joseph’s after-school care program.
I would like to thank the St Joseph’s
community as a whole for all of the
experiences I have had in the program over
the past four years. There has never been a
time when I haven’t looked forward to coming
to school and seeing you all – and that is a
testament to the school and community as a
whole!
Once again, thank you! I’m sure our paths will
cross once again in the future!
Regards,
Patrick
