How old should my child bewhen he/she sits the test?

A – The test is normally available to children registered inyear 6 from September 2015 and who are aged 11years but under 12 years on the 31st August 2016.Your child's date of birth should fall between 1stSeptember 2004 and 31st August 2005. Many childrenwill be 10 when he/she sits the tests but they should be11 by the time they start secondary school.

Should my child sit the testseven if I don’t intend to namea Selective School on the LocalAuthority form?

A – No. The purpose of the tests is to gain entry into oneof the CSSE schools.

What if my child is less than11 years old on 31st August2016 and I want him/her to sitthe test?

A – The CSSE does not encourage early entry other thanin exceptional circumstances. The decision to allow apupil to take the 11+ examination early lies with theadmissions committees of the school/s for which aparent expresses a preference. Under-age pupils arethose who would be less than 11 years old on 31stAugust 2016 and must be registered in Year 6 at thetime of sitting the test. Please contact the CSSE forfurther details on "under-age" entry arrangements.

What are the tests?A – Candidates will sit two tests. One in English and one

in Mathematics. The English paper will last sixtyminutes with ten minutes additional reading time. TheMathematics paper will last sixty minutes. The finalscores for the individual papers are mathematicallystandardised and ‘weighted’, each being worth 50% ofthe marks. Tests are not age standardised.

When do the tests take place?A – The tests will take place on Saturday 19th

September 2015. If your religion does not allow yourchild to take them on a Saturday or your child is illand you can supply a Doctor’s certificate, arrangements will be made for your child to take thetests on Tuesday 29th September 2015. If you haveother exceptional circumstances please contact theCSSE office to discuss.

Will my child have theopportunity to takepractice papers?

A – Your child's present school may help you with this, butremember that children only need a limited amount ofpractice to familiarise themselves with the types of questionsand timing. The Mathematics and English tests will be basedon Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum. Suitablepractice material is available commercially from majorbooksellers. However, please note that these are tests basedat a similar level but are not of the same format as the 11+papers. Please refer to our website www.csse.org.uk for freefamiliarisation papers that you can download. Other practicematerial can be purchased from the CSSE office. Please seepage 13 of this guide for a practice pack order form.

Where does my child takethe tests?

A – Your child will usually take the tests in the selective schoolyou have nominated for the test. In the event of a test centrereaching its maximum capacity for testing an alternativeCSSE school test centre will be allocated by the CSSEoffice. We suggest you register as early as possible.Important: Once your nominated test centre has beenconfirmed we will be unable to alter it. Your child willtake the tests either in a large hall or classroom. There willbe adults in charge of each room overseeing the conduct ofthe tests who will answer any questions the candidates havebefore the tests start. It is important to arrive in time foryour child to be shown where the toilets are and for him/herto settle into the test room well before the tests begin.

What happens if something elseoccurs near (or on) the day of thetest which prevents my childperforming at their best?

A – When you present your child for the test it is expected thatyou are satisfied that there are no other circumstances thathave occurred that will prevent him/her from performing totheir best. If anything has occurred that you know mayaffect their performance you must advise the test centre priorto the test being taken.

What happens if we havedifficulty getting to thetest centre?

A – Please ensure you plan your journey to your child’s testcentre and allow sufficient time to get there. There will becongestion on the roads, particularly near the test centres andyou are advised to listen to the weather and traffic reports onEssex Radio, BBC Essex or BBC Suffolk prior to startingyour journey. Cancellation of the tests due to atrociousweather conditions will also be announced on these radiostations. If the bad weather conditions are local to you, telephone the CSSE Office. Questions in relation toPreference/Admissions/Appeals

What advice would you giveabout the order that I put mypreferences on the LocalAuthority Form?

A – Our advice is that you should list your chosenschools in your true order of preference. If your firstchoice is one of the CSSE Schools then you shouldput it first on your list. This will not prejudice yourapplication to the other schools in your list ofpreferences.

Will the Local Authority offermy child one school placeonly or offers at all my chosenschools for which my childhas met the AdmissionsCriteria?

A – The Local Authority will only offer your child oneschool place. This will be the highest placed schoolin your list of preferences for which your child meetsthe Admissions Criteria. You will not be offeredadditional places at the other schools lower on yourlist, even if your child meets their AdmissionsCriteria.

If your child does well enough in the 11+ tests to beoffered a place at one of your chosen CSSE Schoolsand you have placed this school as your firstpreference then a place will be offered to him/her atthat school. If, however, you place another schoolabove the CSSE School and your child meets theAdmission Criteria for this other school, then theLocal Authority will offer your child a place at theother school.

What happens if my Childdoes not meet the AdmissionsCriteria for my FirstPreference School?

A – If your child does not meet the Admissions Criteriaof your first preference school then your secondpreference moves up the list and is treated as yournew "first preference" by the Local Authority. TheLocal Authority will apply this school's AdmissionCriteria and decide whether or not your child meetsthem and should be offered a place.

Can I name more than oneCSSE School on my LocalAuthority CommonApplication Form?

A – Yes, you can name as many CSSE Schools as youlike, as long as you do not exceed the number ofpreferences allowed by your Local Authority.

Can I appeal against thedecision to refuse my childa place at one of my chosenschools?

A – Information about how to appeal against a refusal ofa school place will be sent to you by your LocalAuthority when you receive your secondary schooloffer in March 2016.

Where any applicant has not been admitted to apreferred school, any parental appeal will be heardby an independent appeal panel established for thatschool.
