Let’s Keep on Moving

OARSI Year in Review: Imaging• Focus on MRI-based studies dealing with

epidemiologic and methodological aspects of disease.

• Assessment of bone parameters and interest in inflammatory disease manifestations

• Ultrastructural assessment using compositional MRI – RQ: What is the predictive value of these techniques regarding structural and clinical outcomes?

• RQ - Role of modalities other than MRI (CT and ultrasound?

• RQ - Imaging research in spine, hip and hand OA

OARSI Year in Review: Mechanics

• Four themes: mechanobiology, ambulatory mechanics, biomechanical interventions and mechanical risk factors

• Altering joint loads can induce protective and harmful responses in the joint. RQ: What features distinguish protective from damaging loads and how can this be applied in clinical interventions?

• Call for: Studies that merge research methods across disciplines, for a more complete understanding and application of the role of mechanics in OA

Osteoarthritis Year in Review 2014 and 2015: MechanicsRF Moyer, A Ratneswaran, F Beier, TB Birmingham (2014); AJ Grodzinsky (2015)

Page 11: 11 AAC Research Symposium “New Directions in Osteoarthritis Research” Kananaskis, Alberta October 22-23, 2015

OARSI Year in Review:Regenerative Medicine

• Emerging technologies to assess the possibility to generate pluripotent stem cells without genetic modification and genetic engineering of growth factors to enhance tissue repair.

• Future Opportunity: Regeneration in a compromised joint environment. Based on interaction between all joint tissues e.g. bone remodeling and synovial inflammation on cartilage repair.

OARSI Year in Review: Biomarkers

• Multiplexed approaches to identify novel OA biomarkers using genomics, proteomics and metabolomics tools

• Call for: Still need robust and validated biomarkers and novel disease modifying OA drugs to support drug development, treatment monitoring, and personalized evidence-based action plans.

We need more biochemical biomarkers in qualification phaseFJ Blanco (2014); AC Bay-Jensen (2015)

OARSI Year in Review:Rehabilitation and Outcomes

• Conservative intervention is a critical component of OA care

• Exercise combined with diet for weight loss should be the mainstays of rehabilitation for people with knee and hip OA to provide benefit to OA disease markers, pain, physical function, and health.

• RQ: What is the impact of reduced lean mass associated with dieting?

OARSI Year in Review: Clinical• OA as a heterogeneous condition with multiple

pathogenic mechanisms and clinical manifestations.

• Theme 1: ‘Metabolic OA’• Theme 2: Personalized medicine in OA

treatment.

• Identification of ‘OA phenotypes’ that are more or less likely to respond to treatments

• RQ: How to target interventions to ‘OA responder’ subgroups to amplify treatment effects?

AAC Models of Care Working GroupQuality Improvement in OA

Continuing to work on improving quality and access to care, the AAC will work together with key stakeholders on the following quality improvement projects:

1) Engaging Primary Care and developing inter-disciplinary teams

Meeting with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) to discuss how we can work together to enhance the diagnosis and effectively manage OA, what are the needs of CFPC and discuss how we can help. November 18, 2015.

Friday, October 23rd Workshop at the Annual Meeting in Kananaskis will focus on “Building Clinical Capacity to Effectively Diagnose and Manage OA”

2) Osteoarthritis Toolkit/

Common Messaging

Working with the Advocacy Committee and the AAC Members to develop hot topic papers and common messaging focused on OA issues, such as; the impact of OA on mobility, rehabilitation, prevention and best practices in OA, injury prevention, sports, etc.
