THEATRE AND DANCE2011 12-

Page 2: 11-12 tad brochure

Dear Friends:

We are pleased to announce a very exciting Theatre and Dance season for 2011-12!

The Theatre Program will present a wide range of works from a contemporary musical to a famous classic, including Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning plays. AEA Guest Artist Mark Kincaid will join the program in the fall, performing the role of King Lear. We are very pleased to welcome this highly experienced actor to work alongside our students in an ambitious and powerful production.

The Dance Program is known for presenting premieres of cutting-edge new choreography by faculty and students. The beautiful work of the Repertory Dance Company will be seen on the large stage of the Mannoni Performing Arts Center and up close in Studio 115 Dance Concerts. The Dance Program welcomes the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, whose work will be seen in a special concert.

Theatre and Dance 2011-12 will provide dynamic challenges for our students to help them reach new goals as artists. We hope you’ll join us for this season of great performances!

Louis Rackoff Stacy Reischman FletcherChair Director of Dance Set in 1957 Pittsburgh, Fences is the story of Troy Maxson, a former Negro Baseball League star excluded

from the major leagues. Troy’s bitterness takes its toll on his relationships with his wife and son but leads to an affirmation of the power of hope and human resilience. August Wilson won the Pulitzer Prize for this brilliant drama in 1987.

Shakespeare’s powerful tragedy will be presented in a highly theatrical production featuring AEA Guest Artist Mark Kincaid in the title role. Mr. Kincaid is a renowned classical actor who has worked at major theatres throughout the country. This is an opportunity to see students performing alongside a highly regarded professional in one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays.

This delightful musical is the hilarious story of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. Winning isn’t everything, and losing doesn’t make you a loser. Spelling Bee won the 2005 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical and has been popular throughout the country.

This 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama is set in a Cuban-American cigar factory in Florida in 1929, where cigars are still rolled by hand and “lectors” are employed to educate and entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector who reads aloud from Anna Karenina becomes a catalyst in the lives of his listeners, leading them to express passionate needs and desires.
