Varsity Holds Inaugural Open Week

Chuka University held the Inaugural Open and

Rights Sensitization Week from 2nd to 6th June, 2014 at the Graduation Pavilion. The purpose of the Week was to promote awareness of the human rights as enshrined in the new Constitution. Career guidance, mentorship, access to

University programmes and products were also conducted during the week.

Each Faculty had a standto display academic programmes, student and staff projects. Talks on Academic programmes were delivered by Deans and representatives of Faculties. The audience on the first day included Secondary School students, Chuka University students and the community at large. The Chief Guest was the Deputy County Commissioner for Tharaka-Nithi County, Mr. George Otieno, who reminded students to always uphold the peace in the community where they reside. On the second day career talks were delivered to students by invited speakers, namely: Mr. Justus Kanga of Equity Bank and Mrs. Esther Michieka of HELB.

Mr. Kanga thrilled the students by giving them a career talk, followed by an instant quiz. He rewarded winners with lots and lots of T-shirts that he had tactfully tacked away in his tiny bag. He whisked the T-shirts from the bag effortlessly and they seemed endless. The youths were left very encouraged and delighted with the eye openers he had presented to them.

Mrs. Michieka addressed the youths with great motherly love and empathy. Her counsel left the students optimistic as it lifted their spirits after confirming that sponsorship for higher education is available. These presentations were preceded by talented students’ performances in drama, music and dance. Day three marked the climax of the events. A talk on rights and privileges was delivered by Commissioner Suzanne Chivusia from the KNHRC.

The week ended on a high note and was highly successful as it met planned objectives. Both staff and students carried their duties with immense discipline and cooperation. Commissioner Chivusia closed the ceremonies by awarding students, Faculties and staff who had won in the areas of creativity, innovation and aesthetics

The week’s activities left everyone yearning for more and hence it will be held annually or biannually. Backing up the Faculties were external exhibitors from banks, NSE, SACCOs, book sellers and publishers, among others.

The Hospital has a bed capacity of 600, making it the second biggest in the region after Machakos Hospital. In future, it is meant to be at the level of Kenyatta National Hospital. It is in the process of acquiring necessary equipment such as MRI that would allow it to conduct advanced operations. The County Government of Embu guaranteed its commitment in fostering the University-Hospital MoU and suggested that more programmes in the areas of public health should be offered. Besides the mutual benefits, staff training will boost human resource capacity in the Hospital and enlighten the community members within the county through outreach services. The MOU followed another similar one entered into by Chuka University and Chuka General Hospital in 2013 for the same purpose of fostering Health Sciences training.

Vice-Chancellor Attends Environmental Management Workshop in the United KingdomBy Judy Wamuya

Prof. Erastus N. Njoka late last year attended an Environmental Management Workshop

at the University of Brighton, Britain from 19th - 23rd November, 2013. The Workshop was organized by the University of Brighton and the Kenyan High Commission to create mutually beneficial partnerships among Brighton University, Chuka University, Laikipia University, Embu County, Laikipia County, Embu and Mbeere Water and Sewerage Company (EMBEWASCO) and Laikipia Water Company. Others in the Kenyan delegation were Hon. Joshua Irungu (Governor, Laikipa County), Mr. Wanjiru Mwariri (CEC Member for Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources, Laikipia County), Mr. John Nduma (MD, EMBEWASCO), Mr. Maina Mwangi (MD, Laikipia Water Company), and Mr. Lemmy Muriuki (Lecturer, Department of Environmental Studies in Chuka University).

The presentations covered integration of science in sports and the importance of sports in conflict resolution. The University has a Biobank of DNA of majority of athletes in the World. DNA samples are also taken from rugby players across British Universities to explain performance in sports. Additional research pieces on Kenya included East Africa Running - A Cross Discipline Perspective; Effect of Altitude on Kenyan Athletes and Effect of Doping on Kenyan Athletes. East Africans perform well in sports due to superior genetics, role models, natural instincts and aerobics training.

The delegates later visited Southern Water Company and treatment works at the Sussex County Council, Veolia waste recycling facility

in Hollingbury, which serves Brighton and Hove towns of East Sussex, and Veolia Energy Recovery facility in Peace Haven. The Kenyan delegates made presentations on working partnerships and collaborations. Mr. Nduma pledged to continuously engage in joint water research and assets sharing initiatives with Chuka University, Kenya.

Prof. Njoka gave a review of Chuka University and Embu Water Company Joint Environmental Management Partnership. He explained that Chuka University provides technological solutions through training in applied sciences, dry land agriculture, environmental studies and renewable energy management in eastern Kenya region. He emphasized ways in which institutions of higher learning can partner with County government agencies in environmental management. He illustrated the current state of natural resources in Eastern region, land use practices, impacts on communities and policy responses using System of Indicators model. He mentioned proposed approaches for water and waste management that included upland reservoirs for rain water harvesting, conventional water treatment plants, improvement of on-site feacal and effluent discharge systems, and adoption of Unit Disposal Systems for waste. He explained the need for renewable energy adoption through use of solar concentrators, biogas, biofuels, wind power and micro turbine hydro generators.

Prof. Njoka and Mr. Muriuki visited the University of Sussex on Wednesday 27/11/2013 with an intention of exploring possible collaborations in Psychology and Education. He noted that through such a partnership, students would exchange scientific materials, lectures and joint research. Guy Robinson explained that it was possible to collaborate in Psychological studies. This would entail a visit to Chuka University, curriculum matching and credit transfers, as well as supervision of Masters and Ph.D. students. The visit to the ACU in Woburn House, Tavitock was to gather requirements for membership and criteria for research fellowships and grants. Dr. John Kirkland, Deputy Secretary General remarked that ACU has 540 members, including 110 members in Africa and 250 in Asia. He said that ACU runs programmes and lobbies for Millennium Development Goals,

organizes annual conferences and undertakes individual projects. Advantages of joining ACU were development of staff, research and professional networks management. ACU was encouraging British Universities to partner with African Universities, although there re many inequalities between the partners. Prof. Njoka further discussed avenues for split-side Ph.D. and Master’s degree studies with Universities of Brighton and Anglia-Ruskin. Anglia-Ruskin University, London East, could explore partnerships in Public Health training. Dr. Simon Pratt-Adams, Deputy Dean-International & External Income, Faculty of Heath Care and Education, was on hand for the meeting. He explained the current programmes in Presbyterian University and their mission in Maasai. He also expressed interest in collaborating with more Universities in Kenya.
