FROM the beginning of time humankind has conducted some form of ritual to hon-our the dead.

Funeral ceremonies are times when family and community acknowledge the end of a life and for many there is the belief that life continues on in an afterlife.

Some cultures celebrate this fact in the form of religious rituals.

These rituals provide comfort to the mourners.

Other rituals are performed with the belief that those remaining behind are re-quired to enact the rituals to ensure the dead are able to pass over in to the next life.

As we honour and celebrate a life we give people who have held the individual in high regard the opportunity to participate, be it actively by telling part of their family mem-ber or friend’s story, taking a more hands-on involvement or just attending the ceremony.

The team at Bethany Funeral Home exists

to help family members celebrate the life of their loved ones.

To help your loved ones during the grieving pro-cess, they offer Funeral Bond packages for under 55 and seniors over 55.

These packages can help you clearly communicate your preferences and remove the burden of funeral planning from your family during an emotional time in their life.

WELCOME to the rst magazine edi-tion of Senior Living.

The Weekender has compiled nu-merous seniors features over the past 26 years but this week we have dedicat-ed a magazine to be an ongoing focus on seniors living in the Great Southern.

We all know Albany and the outly-ing regions have become a retirement mecca and for many positive reasons – the Mediterranean climate, the scen-ery, friendly people, incredible beach-es, gorgeous parks … the list really does go on.

What the area also has is proactive

seniors coming into retirement and grabbing it with both hands – shing, bowls, gardening, touring, swimming and socialising, to name a few.

Look at the fantastic array of seniors groups that push the boundaries, vol-unteer their time for charities and turn their hobbies almost to a professional level.

Anyway, have fun, enjoy the read and continue to get out amongst the regional attractions and live life.

ENJOY the freedom and exibility that comes with living in an independent seniors rental com-munity.

Purpose built for seniors, this pet-friendly, gated community provides peace-of-mind for residents and their family alike.

Ingenia Gardens Yakamia Community Manager Jennifer Lonsdale said residents love the fact they can come and go as they please, feel safe and se-cure and feel like they belong to a welcoming com-munity of like-minded people.

“They also love the freedom of being able to lock and leave their home, freeing them up to trav-el and visit friends,” she said.

Flexibility is key for residents which is why the rental model is ideal for many seniors seeking an

alternative to traditional buy-in retirement villages.

The residents of Ingenia Gardens Yakamia en-joy a full social calendar with regular games, activi-ties, fundraising events and musical performances held in the central community room as well as bus trips to local attractions.

Residents also like the exibility of continuing to cook for themselves or enjoying home-style meals prepared onsite in the comfort of the com-munity room.

If health and wellbeing needs change, residents have access to a complimentary care coordination service.

Contact Ms Lonsdale Monday to Friday on 9842 8433 to arrange a personalised tour and tailor a package to your needs.

Happy Days

People with severe forms of sleep apnoea are at an increased risk of experiencing high blood pres-sure, heart attacks and strokes, as well as motor ve-hicle accidents.

Associated symptoms can include loud snoring, morning headaches, fatigue during the day, poor concentration, mood changes, impotence and the need to go to the bathroom frequently during the night.

Obesity, alcohol, certain medications, illnesses like reduced thyroid production, large tonsils, nasal con-gestion and particular facial bone structures can all be contributing factors.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry - pop into the store or give the friendly and professional Dog Rock Chemist team a call on 9841 1115 today.

IT’S easy to underestimate the value of getting a good night’s sleep.

Stress and sleeping disorders like in-somnia, restless leg syndrome and various forms of sleep apnoea are often cited as the main causes of sleep issues in older Australians.

A total of around 5 per cent of people around the country suffers from the latter issue, with one in four men over the age of 30 affected and those over 65 particularly susceptible.

Dog Rock Chemist is on the frontline of the ght against restlessness and re-cently began offering a Total Sleep Apnoea Service for those in Albany and surrounds struggling when the lights go out.

The Middleton Road pharmacy stocks Philips and Resmed Sleep CPAP machines and parts and can provide initial sleep tests for free for those referred by their doctors.

Ancient craft bobs up

A TEXTILE craft originating from 16th century Italy is well and truly alive in Albany today and the ladies who practise it nd it bene cial for them both socially and mentally.

The Albany Bobbin Lace Makers meet twice a month at Living Water Angli-can Church to put their bobbins and pins to work, creating lace doilies, table runners, hats, bags and garments.

They spend hours upon hours delicately interweaving, braiding and twisting threads to create different patterns and in that large time frame, may only nish with a tiny piece of lace.

But their beautiful nished products are proof of the wonders patience and perseverance can create.

Comprised of retirees, the lace making crew nds participating in the ancient

“You get really excited when you nish something,” long-term member Jonna Carruthers said.

“It’s an achievement, especially at our age, so you just want to share it with someone, and I believe it’s good for your body and soul.”

“But sometimes you want to pull your hair out!” laughed fellow member Sandra Bright.

Some of the ladies have practised the craft on and off since their teenage years and others have picked it up after nish-ing their careers and raising children.

They’ve travelled across the country and the world for lace conventions and won prizes at the Albany Agricultural Show.

But their favourite part about their meetings is being together.

“It’s the social part I love,” member Shirl Wood said.

“And Jonna’s funny stories,” member Barbara Shardlow giggled.

The Albany Bobbin Lace Makers meet on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at Living Water Anglican Church, Lower King Road.

If you would like to join, call Ms Shardlow on 9842 5617 to double-check when the next gathering is.

ALBANY Community Hospice launched a new community based, peer-to-peer support service for palliative carers this year.

The Weavers Program is a unique support program originally developed in South Australia and is now being implemented for the rst time in Western Australia.

Weavers are experienced carers, who know what it is like to care for others with a life limit-ing illness.

The Weavers, as volunteers, receive training and support to enhance their skills and equip them with the resources to walk alongside carers

as they deal with the challenges in providing end-of-life care for their loved one.

This program will enhance the expert pal-liative care services that Hospice provides to its guests and families by extending support to car-ers so they can continue to provide care for their loved one at home

The Hospice has provided care for 170 pa-tients between 2017 and 2018, most of whom have a carer.

For more information on the services provid-ed by Albany Community Hospice, contact the friendly team on 9892 2456.

Life is one big adventure

ONE thing the team at Peregrine Adven-tures has learned – you never outgrow ad-venture.

You don’t outgrow the spirit that drives you to get out there and see the world, not through a coach window or with 50 stran-gers wearing headsets, not with a personal butler or a big buffet breakfast, but inti-mately, authentically and memorably.

At Peregrine, they are for premium adven-

tures and for them that means embracing the spirit of adventure through a more im-mersive cultural journey.

Handpicked accommodation, small groups, award-winning local guides, added inclusions and a more considered pace.

Premium means an exceptional experi-ence, but never an arti cial one.

WHAT IS WEAVERS?The Weavers Program is a unique volunteer peer-to-peer support program, pioneered by The Australian Centre for Social Innovation and designed by palliative carers for palliative carers. Connecting with a volunteer ‘Weaver’, an experienced and trained former palliative carer, the carer gains an ally to walk alongside them and share stories and knowledge about services and strategies.

The four areas in which Weaver volunteers support palliative carers are:• Navigating Palliative Services: helping carers to understand what is

available for them, how to access it and how to make services work for their situation.

• Connecting with your support network: helping carers communicate their needs to the people around them and get them involved in the caring context.

• Coping with emotional challenges: helping carers refl ect on and live day to day with their grief.

• Looking after yourself: helping carers understand how to take care of themselves and how to fi t it in the caring context.

Genuinely caring community

EVERYONE looks after each other at Royal Austral-ian Airforce Association’s (RAAFA) Amity Village Albany, according to resident Mercedes White.

The 78-year-old grandmother has called the RAAFA estate in Yakamia home for just over four years and sits on the resi-dent’s committee, which meets monthly to discuss anything of concern.

“I love it here, it’s so friendly and you can get involved as much or as little as you like,” she said.

“Personally I really like getting involved with things and very much enjoy all the activities on offer.”

Ms White said that in addition to Tai Chi sessions, an open pool and a raft of card games, residents have the option to par-ticipate in recreational activities like movie nights, snooker and bowls and happy hour on Friday evenings.

The passionate artist added that the village’s “most wonder-ful” art teacher organised group meetings every Wednesday to get the creative juices owing.

Ms White has two children as well as twin grandchildren liv-ing on the Gold Coast, and said that as people get older, it’s important for others to take up the baton so the community runs smoothly and things get done.

“If you want the village to run well so that everyone is happy, you really need to roll up your sleeves and join in,” she said.

“I didn’t know anyone before I moved here to Albany, but I’ve subsequently made lots of great friends. It really is just like a family, there’s new people moving in all the time and, as they nd their feet, they tend to join in as well.

“People genuinely care about each other ... I couldn’t be hap-pier.”

ALL the good things happened in the 1980s – the Rubik’s Cube

was introduced, Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back premiered in cinemas and Bruce Springsteen released Glory Days.

It was also the decade the Al-bany Model Railway Association formed, a group that would stand the tests of time to still be our-ishing 30 years later in 2019.

Current Vice President Peter Pocock was there when the group founded and recalled it was Alba-ny lawyer Robert Goodman who initiated the idea for a model train group.

He donated a large collection of his personal model trains to the City of Albany and said any-one interested in forming a group could have them.

The model railway association has allowed Mr Pocock to main-tain his passion for trains and cre-ating models.

“I’ve been infected by it since I was this high,” he said, crouching down.

Foam mattresses, real plants, newspaper and cardboard are some of the secret materials used to construct the different scener-ies and must be seen in person to

fully appreciate the incredible de-tail and scale.

The upcoming Hobby Expo is part of the group’s desire to share their passion for their hobby.

Loving and lastingDURING a time of grief, nancial strain is the last thing you want to think about.

Funerals and memorials can be expensive and can become a sudden, unexpected, out-of-pock-et cost for families, leaving some short on money and causing arguments between loved ones.

The team at Albany Monumental Masons un-derstands this and hopes people will come to them when they are considering pre-planning a memorial.

General Manager Lisa Miles (nee Bovell) is a third-generation Bovell working with her own family to help other families grieve without the stress of organising memorials and headstones.

In light of Dying to Know Day, a national day encouraging people to talk about dying, death and what comes next, Ms Miles agrees it is also a good time to talk about memorials.

“People often pre-plan their funerals, which is great, it takes the pressure off the family during their grieving,” she said.

“But people don’t necessarily think about the after things, like memorials; it’s often one of the last things they do or think about.

“But people can pre-arrange this, so it’s a mat-ter of just coming in and letting us take care of

the rest – then, the person can have a say in what they want, and everyone can understand the cost.”

Ms Miles understands how important memorials are as part of the grieving process and encourage people to consider this discussion alongside pre-planning funerals.

“It’s a place to go and it’s a place for people to remem-ber their loved one,” she said of memorials.

“And because each memorial is unique, a memorial can re ect the character of the passed loved one and re ect a family’s love for them.”

ACCORDING to lawyer Philip Wyatt, three of the most important legal documents a senior should have are a will, an advanced health direc-tive and an enduring power of attorney docu-ment.

He believes untrue stigma surrounding these documents prevents people from organising them when they are younger – he reminds peo-ple it’s not just seniors who should have their legal matters in order.

“There’s a misconception that you will die to-morrow if you have a will,” Mr Wyatt said.

“But ultimately, it makes it harder for your family when you die if you don’t have a will, be-cause things don’t all go to the people you want them to.”

Mr Wyatt explained how an advanced health directive helped medical staff and families be aware of who is legally allowed to make health-related decisions on a person’s behalf if they be-come incapable of doing so themselves.

He said an enduring power of attorney also assists when a person loses their mental or phys-ical capacity to sign legal documents, such as selling a house to move into an aged care home, as the document designates someone to act on that person’s behalf.

And he said it really isn’t that hard to organise.

“I’ve been doing this for 40 years and I be-lieve I’m reasonably priced, I’m clear and con-cise, and I try to make it as painless as I can for the client,” Mr Wyatt said..

Perfect outlookWHEN you drive into Albany over the crest of the hill for the rst time, the thing you notice immediately is the overwhelming scenery. End-less vistas of green farmland, the craggy hill tops of Mount Clarence and Mount Melville juxtaposed against blue sky, and expansive rib-bons of blue water in the King George Sound.

It’s a vision that captivated Joe Clark-Murphy and his wife Ursula when they visited in 2012 on what was supposed to be a long weekend holiday visit, but ended up one which would forever change the direction of their lives.

“We love our sports, we’re into running and the feeling of space and gorgeous countryside really appealed to us. We’d been to Albany be-fore, but this time we decided to take a deeper look around with the view to considering a life down here. No harm in looking, right?” Mr Clark-Murphy said.

The couple spent some of their trip visiting the various facilities in the town including

medical, shopping, pubs and clubs and the beautiful coastline of the Albany area, but it was their visit to The Outlook which was the deciding factor.

“We had a checklist of the things that we would need in order to make us sell up in Perth and move. The Outlook was the property which ticked all of the boxes,” Mrs Clark-Murphy said.

“We hadn’t really expected to make the deci-sion that quickly, but when we weighed it up, there was no reason not to move, and lots of reasons why we should.”

The day after they came back to their three bed, two bath home in Bayswater, they were selling up and moving.

“We didn’t look back from that moment on. Our house sold in eight days, I quit my job, and we packed up and moved, much to the shock of our friends. But this new direction suited us perfectly, so there was no doubt in our minds. The climate was better for our outdoor pursuits, and with the new home, we had eve-rything we wanted, right on our doorstep, or within easy reach,” Mrs Clark-Murphy said.

Fast forward to seven years later and the Clark-Murphys now enjoy their lifestyle in the Village and the wider community.

Pick any day and you might nd Mr Clark-Murphy out running or strumming up a storm with his ukulele group, or Mrs Clark-Murphy whipping through the water with her dragon boat crew. When asked what their life is like now compared to their old life, they both agree. “We have never looked back. We’re lov-ing making the most of everything Albany has to offer,” they said.

WHEN Baptistcare Bethel Village resident Patricia Gammon made the move to retirement village liv-ing, she had no idea that she would soon become a Scrabble star at the adjoining aged care facility.

Wanting to give back to her community, the 84-year-old decided to volunteer at Baptistcare Bethel Residential Care and now spends two-and-a-half days a week helping with arts and crafts ac-tivities and enjoying a game of Scrabble with the aged care residents.

“When we play Scrabble, I make my opponent laugh and they make me laugh and we openly cheat. When they can’t make a word I’ll suggest we swap tiles so they can. We have a lot of fun,” Mrs Gammon said.

Mrs Gammon has been living at Baptistcare Bethel Village for the past year and is enjoying both the convenience and great sense of commu-nity on offer.

“It’s lovely here because the retirement village and the residential care facility are a real commu-nity, not separate at all,” Mrs Gammon said.

“And I just love my unit and living in the vil-lage. The view from my unit is just beautiful, I have good neighbours and management are really easy-going, nothing’s ever a problem.

“Everything is so close by, but it’s not all on top of you like in a city; you’re still in the country.”

When Mrs Gammon is not volunteering, she en-joys lunch or a movie with her friends, gardening, attending the social get-togethers at Baptistcare Bethel Village, and spending time with her daugh-ter who lives nearby.

ALBANY Funeral Directors’ service to the Great Southern in Western Australia is a continuation of tradition in funeral direct-ing since 1920.

Their philosophy is one of honesty and transparency – there are no hidden costs, no ‘hard-sell’ and all of the support and understanding that you and your family require, day or night.

At some time in life, everyone will experience the loss of someone close. The grief, confusion and numbness that accom-pany the news of a death can sometimes make decisions regard-ing funeral arrangements dif cult and stressful.

The team at Albany Funeral Directors understands this is a deeply personal and private time, when sensitivity to the memo-ry of a loved one is paramount.

A funeral director’s role is to answer the many questions that will arise and to guide you through arrangements necessary to create a loving and nal tribute.
