What To Know Before Starting

➢ Ensure the temperature of the substrate is between 10°C and 30°C➢ The product should not be applied to humid or porous surfaces that

can absorb moisture from the soil➢ Maintain a relative humidity of maximum 85% during application and

curing➢ Do not apply outside➢ Discolouration can occur in places regularly exposed to UV light➢ Always wear full coverage clothing, gloves and safety goggles ➢ If dermal contact with the product occurs, wash immediately with

warm water and soap

Required Number of Coats for Desired Finish:➢ Standard colour = 2 Coats (Base and Top)➢ Anti-Slip = 2 Coats (Base and Top)➢ Vinyl Flake = 3 Coats (Coloured Primer, Coloured Base, Clear Top)➢ Metallic = 2 Coats (Base and Top)➢ Pearlescent = 2 Coats (Base and Top)

Step 1: Concrete Assessment❑Was the concrete poured more than 30 days ago and has it fully

cured?❑ Is there moisture within the concrete?

• Test: Place a 16” x 16” plastic square on the floor with all edges taped down and leave it for 24hrs.

• Remove the plastic square and see if any water droplets have formed under it.

❑Does the concrete have crevices/cracks?❑ Is there efflorescent salts present on the concrete surface?❑ Is the concrete’s temperature between 10°C and 30°C?

Step 2: Cleaning the ConcreteRequired only if application surface is stained or contaminatedA dry and clean surface is essential for proper application.1. Use a concrete cleaner and/or degreaser to wash the concrete floor

and remove contaminants that may affect the epoxy’s bond to the concrete.

2. Rinse floor thoroughly two or three days ahead of application. 3. Do not proceed unless the floor is dry.

Page 8: 1065 Matheson Blvd E. Unit #5 L4W 3P1 · Step 8b: Applying a Metallic or Pearlescent Finish. Upon pouring out the epoxy you will have 45 minutes to apply it. First coat. 1. Pour out

Step 3: Removing/Prepping a Coated FloorIf the concrete is bare this step can be skipped.1. For the best results, any coating on the concrete should be removed.

A. This can be done by using a grinder with a diamond head.B. This will remove the coating and reduce the floor to bare

concrete.2. If the coating cannot be removed, use an orbital sander with sixty grit

sandpaper to create a suitable surface for application of the 100% Solids Epoxy.

Step 4: Removing DustRemoving all dust off the floor is IMPORTANT. Any dust left on the floor will directly impact the strength of the epoxy bond. Dust on the concrete may cause peeling or flaking.1. Sweep the surface to remove any concrete dust and contaminants.

A. Use a corner broom for all the edges and corners B. Use a push broom for all the open areas

2. Use a shop vacuum to ensure the complete removal of all contaminants left on the floor or in any cracks before application

Page 9: 1065 Matheson Blvd E. Unit #5 L4W 3P1 · Step 8b: Applying a Metallic or Pearlescent Finish. Upon pouring out the epoxy you will have 45 minutes to apply it. First coat. 1. Pour out

Step 5: Filling Cracks

Step 6: Preparation for ApplicationIt is important to be prepared to move onto applying the epoxy floor coating prior to mixing the product.1. Prepare all paint rollers and squeegees2. Put on spiked shoes/cleats3. Have paint brushes ready for trimming 4. Have cotton cloths at the ready to clean up any unintended drips

This step can be skipped if there are no cracks.DO NOT fill in any cracks with concrete, use an epoxy concrete crack filler as it will form a tight bond to both the concrete and the epoxy.

1. Use a grinder to lightly remove any friable particles from the crack 2. Use a shop vacuum to remove any dust or particles from the crack

before applying the crack filler3. Mix the crack filler together 4. Use a putty knife to apply the gel to the cracks

Note: Make certain the crack filler completely fills the crack, so that it is level with the concrete

Step 7: Mixing the 100% Solids Epoxy

➢ When mixing it is important to ensure that both the hardener and resin are in ratio. A large discrepancy from the proper ratio may cause problems when applying or affect the cure of the product.

➢ Mixing should be done with a drill and mixing paddle for the best result.

1. Stir each component.A. The “A” pail must be stirred well to ensure that the pigment has

not settled to the bottom of the pail. 2. Mix both the “A” and “B” pail together and mix for 4 minutes at a low

speed to avoid air entrapmentA. When doing this, scrape along the sides and bottom of the

mixing pail and move up and down in the mixture to guarantee a homogenous mixture.

NOTE: Move on to applying the epoxy shortly after mixing. Epoxy heats up as it sits and will get very hot when in a large quantity. Thus, applying the epoxy to the concrete shortly after mixing will prevent this from happening.

Step 8a: Applying the Standard Solid Colour High Gloss Epoxy FinishUpon pouring out the epoxy you will have 45 minutes to apply it1. Pour out the epoxy in a line across the floor 6” away from any wall or

end of the application area2. Take a paint brush and quickly trim any edges3. Use a squeegee to spread out the product along the floor in a back

and forth pattern from one side to the otherA. It is important to avoid puddling

4. Use a paint roller to roll the productA. Start rolling up and down then roll left to rightB. This will provide even coverage across the floor

➢ If applying a second coat to acquire a smother finish, wait 24 hours➢ If a second coat is to be applied after 48 hours, sand the surface

with a sander fitted with 60-grit sandpaper1. If any flaking has occurred use a scraper to scrape off the flaking tip2. Check and clean floor of any contaminants 3. Follow the same procedure for putting down the second coat as

followed for the first coat

Check and clean floor of any contaminants 3. Follow same procedure for putting down second coat as followed for

the first coat except DO NOT DO STEP 44. To acquire a non-linear finish use squeegee to create desired look

Step 9: Applying an Anti-Slip System or Vinyl Flake Design (OPTIONAL) Anti-Slip System:Applying an Anti-Slip system to the epoxy should be done on the second coat shortly after the second coat has been applied1. Begin by throwing the sand upwards to obtain a uniform spread2. Sprinkle sand over areas where a higher coverage is desired3. Re-roll over sanded portion to entrap the sand within the epoxy

Vinyl Flake Design:➢ Applying the Vinyl Flake to the epoxy should be done on the second

coat➢ A third clear coat will be required to cover and protect flaking1. Begin by throwing flake upwards to obtain a uniform distribution2. Sprinkle flake over areas where a higher coverage is desired3. Wait for 24 hours for second coat to cure4. Use a scraper to remove flake tips that have not adhered to the

epoxy 5. Use a shop vacuum to clean up non-adhered leftover flake6. Apply clear coat over top of flake for a smooth protective finish

Step 10: Curing and CleaningCuring:➢A wait time of 24 hours should be considered between coats➢The newly applied epoxy should be left to cure for 12 hours before

light traffic and a minimum of 48 hours before vehicle traffic

Cleaning: ➢All tools that have been in contact with the epoxy should be cleaned

with xylene immediately after use
