VOTE FOR BILL FRIENDBRANT HIGHWAY SUPERINTENDENTSome things to know about Bill:
Bill is a man of strong integrity. He is a man of service to others. Bill listens, learns your needs and then he serves. Bill has the uncanny ability to just pitch in and has been doing so for the community of Brant for years. He gets the job done.
For example, Lajos Asboth, Brant farmer, had a stroke two years ago and needed help with his cows. Bill said he would take care of the farm twice daily and did this for months and months. If Bill’s work took him out of town, he made arrangements with his own family and still got the job done. He also would check on Mr. and Mrs. Asboth daily because the Asboth family could not be there daily to help their elderly parents. Why did Bill do this? Because Bill gave his word. He has been a blessing to Brant families and continues to impact others by generous gift of giving of himself.
Next example, Peter Gugino Farms ... Bill was a mechanic for Peter for years. He always went above and beyond, night or day, did anything that needed to get done, and did it unselfishly! Bill was always there to help.
A person of this character surely would carry these work ethics and positive traits over as the
NEXT HIGHWAY SUPERINTENDENT OF THE TOWN OF BRANT. Please vote for Bill on November 3rd.
BILL FRIEND IS A FRIEND TO ALL.
If other supporters of Bill have testimonials like this, please share!Paid for by the Asboth Family
Once again, a HUGE THANK YOU to all who supported me in the September Primary for
Town of Brant Highway Superintendent! The encouragement you have shown to me
during my first-time campaign, is very much appreciated. I would be grateful for your support
in the upcoming November election as well! Sincerely, Bill Friend

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your moodier side might emerge this week. But the dark period should pass in time for the par-ty-loving Lamb to go on a happy gambol with some very special people this weekend.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Yet again, you show your skill at being able to indulge in your love of the arts this week while still taking care of practical matters, including some still-unfi nished business matters.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A potential change might appear to be what you’ve been looking for. In any event, consider both the negative as well as the positive possibilities before making any sort of deci-sion.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Relationships continue to dominate your aspect this week on a mostly pos-itive level, with just a few problem areas you can smooth over. Also, try to be fl exible about travel plans.LEO (July 23 to August 22) You love being on center
stage, and while you abso-lutely purr at the sound of all that praise, be careful not to take on too many commitments at the ex-pense of time spent with loved ones.VIRGO (August 23 to Sep-tember 22) You might feel that you need to get in-volved in a matter concern-ing a friend or relative. But while the issues appear to be cut and dried, they might not be. Get more facts be-fore you act.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A sugges-tion about a policy change could create heated reac-tions. Keep your mind open and resist joining in with naysayers unless they can show a real basis for their position.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While po-tential career changes war-rant your interest, don’t ignore current job responsi-bilities. A personal relation-ship also can benefi t from more of your attention.SAGITTARIUS (Novem-ber 22 to December 21) Don’t guess at what the facts might be if you hope
to make the best decisionpossible. The wise course isto ask direct questions andact on the answers you get.CAPRICORN (December22 to January 19) Your ef-forts involving that peskyproblem should soon show positive signs of being re-solved. This would allowyou to shift some of yourfocus in another direction.AQUARIUS (January 20 toFebruary 18) While you en-joy well-deserved praise forgetting a diffi cult job done, there’s no time to relax. Anew challenge looms. Ex-pect more support from aonce-strong critic.PISCES (February 19 toMarch 20) You might stillhave explaining to do aboutyour decision, but supportgrows as you continue tomake your case. You also might want to start makingplans for the upcoming hol-idays.BORN THIS WEEK: You insist on making decisionsbased on facts, not on pop-ular opinions. Have youconsidered a career in sci-ence?

Fun Family Autumn ActivitiesFall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful fall foliage coupled with great weather compel many people to spend ample time outdoors before the arrival of harsh winter weather drives them back indoors. The following are a handful of actvities that are tailor-made for fall.* Raking Leaves: While raking leaves might not jump out at you as a great way to spend a nice fall afternoon, families often find raking leaves together soon turns into a fun day in the yard. Build leaf piles and let the kids jump in! When raking, encourage kids to collect some colorful leaves for homemade crafts. * Hayride: Hayrides are another fall tradition, and many farms offer relaxing hayrides throughout fall. Younger children who may tire if asked to patrol an apple orchard for apples might find a hayride is more their speed. Some farms may even allow customers to walk the grounds and visit the animals on the premises.* Hiking: Hiking is a fun activity that can be enjoyed nearly year-round, but it’s especially enjoyable in the fall. That’s because few things in nature are as captivatingas a park or forest when the fall foliage is in full bloom. Early fall also boasts ideal temperatures for hiking, as the mercury likely won’t rise enough or sink low enough to produce the kind of extreme temperatures that can compromise a hiker’s afternoon. Instead, fall temperatures tend to be mild and comfortable, allowing hikers to fully enjoy their often beautiful surroundings.* Fall Mazes: Visiting a corn maze or straw maze is another activity that many peopleinstantly associate with fall. Some farmers transform their cornfields into corn mazes once the temperatures dip, and such mazes can be fun for adults and children alike. Though adolescents can often be trusted to find their way through mazes, younger kids should be accompanied by an adult.* Pumpkins: Go pick your future jack-o’-lantern from a nearby pumpkin patch or find one at a local market. Let your youngsters pick out their own pumpkins and then spend the rest of the day carving them at home. And don’t forget to save those seeds, which can be roasted over an open flame to make a delicious snack.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.Blood Donation’s Aff ect on Athlete
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a fi t 54-year-old male who bicycles a lot. My friends and I are pretty competi-tive when we do our rides, pushing hard and challeng-ing each other in positive ways. I donate blood as oft en as I’m allowed. Aft er donating, my legs feel more fatigued when I ride, and I’m not as strong, partic-ularly on the climbs. How long can I use my blood donation as an “excuse” for lacking strength? -- A.R.
ANSWER: What ultimate-ly determines how much work your legs can do is the amount of oxygen the mus-cles are able to get, once you have achieved a high level of muscular fi tness. Th e amount of red blood cells in your blood and the amount of blood your heart can pump are the limiting factors for oxygen delivery in a healthy person. So, for a given degree of cardiovas-cular fi tness, your ability to go fast and climb hills is directly infl uenced by how many red blood cells you have. Th at’s why elite cyclists sometimes used to get blood transfusions be-fore a race. An extra unit of blood might make only a 3 percent diff erence, but the diff erence between the win-ner of the Tour de France and the last-place fi nisher is right around 3 percent.Unfortunately, too many red blood cells increases the risk for stroke and heart attack, and several amateur and professional cyclists have died as a complication of too much blood trans-fused or its more modern equivalent, the hormone erythropoietin, which caus-es the body to make more of its own blood. Losing
blood, from bleeding or donation, consequently re-duces performance.Th e plasma (fl uid and pro-teins) is made up within 24 hours aft er donating blood, but it takes four to six weeks to regain the blood cells. Donating a unit of blood can save up to three lives. Th at should give you some consolation. Maybe persuade your friends to donate blood at the same time, so you all are on a lev-el playing fi eld, so to speak.***DEAR DR. ROACH: I am looking to have surgery on my cervical vertebrae at a prestigious hospital in St. Louis. Before I had even made up my mind, the hos-pital sent a form regarding arbitration. If anything should go wrong, they want me to agree to arbitration instead of going through the court system. Th ey say the choice is mine. Is this normal preoperative paper-work? -- T.B.ANSWER: Th is is increas-ingly common, and a brief survey of surgeons gave me a mixed response -- some felt it wasn’t a red fl ag at all, and others recommend-
ing double-checking thesurgeon’s record, perhapsthrough the state medicalboard. Any disciplinaryaction must be publiclyavailable, and in Missouriit is freely available on thewebsite at pr.mo.gov/heal-ingarts.asp.While I understand youmight be taken aback by thequestion, many hospitalsare moving toward arbitra-tion as a means of reducingmalpractice coverage costs.I personally don’t see it asa reason to be concernedabout the surgeon. Howev-er, I spoke with an attorney, who advised not agreeingto arbitration, as it isn’t ger-mane to your medical con-dition and may limit youroptions later.***Dr. Roach regrets that he isunable to answer individualletters, but will incorporate them in thecolumn whenever possi-ble. Readers may emailquestions to [email protected] view and order healthpamphlets, visit www.rb-mamall.com, or write toGood Health, 628 VirginiaDrive Orlando, FL 32803.

COUCH THEATERBy Sam Struckhoff
PICKS OF THE WEEK“Tomorrowland” (PG) -- What we once knew as “the part of Disney World that has Space Mountain” is now a feature-length futuristic adventure starring George Clooney. Casey (Brittany Robertson), a plucky, sci-ence-oriented teen, fi nds a pin that takes her to a world of futuristic fancy. She meets up with a former boy-genius (Clooney) in the hopes that they can fi nd their way back to Tomor-rowland, where things are shiny, science is awesome, and mankind lives in har-mony with the planet.Th e fi lm is really, really fi xed on this idea that sci-ence and society in gen-eral were better and more hopeful some decades ago, and that we need that old-time optimism once again if we’re going to make it through the various social and environmental prob-lems of today. If you can stomach the preaching, it’s a fun ride for the kids, and a lot less expensive than a trip to Space Mountain.
“San Andreas” (PG-13) -- Dwayne “Th e Rock” John-son brings a helicopter to an earthquake fi ght in this mega-disaster thriller. Ray Gaines (Johnson) is a rescue guy who needs to patch things up with his ex-wife so they can save their daughter from a super earthquake that’s rearrang-ing California. Not much else to see or hear over the roaring special eff ects. It’s a big, loud spectacle that doesn’t bring much origi-nality to the table. Th e real objective here is getting Th e Rock in a vehicle and watching it go. Some view-ers may need to chug large quantities of soda or tea, as the boom and blunder is hard to appreciate without a raging sugar-rush. It’s fun, but not worth the conse-
quences.
“Dope” (R) -- Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is on his way to college from a rough neighborhood in Califor-nia. He’s smart, funny and a proud geek who knows his hip-hop trivia. Just when he’s got his shot at being re-ally cool, a series of events leaves Malcolm with a large amount of drugs and or-ders to sell it -- or else! Th is rare summer comedy was hailed across the fi lm festi-vals for its originality, sharp wit, slick direction and hy-per-awareness. With this one role, Moore has eyes on him for a follow-up per-formance. Pick this one up for a diff erent perspective on what the kids are up to these days.
“Manos: Th e Hands of Fate” (R) -- Th is 1966 no-bud-get drive-in fl op is lauded
as the worst movie ever-- and it’s now remastered for Blu-Ray! Th e fi rst actfeatures a punishingly bor-ing account of a husband, wife and young daugh-ter getting lost on a Texasroad trip. Th ey stop for thenight a tiny lodge tendedby Torgo, a scruff y weirdowhose exaggerated limpgets its own theme mu-sic every time he hobblesacross the screen. Th ere’san undying dark priest in astupid hand-themed robe,Th e Master, but he doesn’tevoke so much fear as pity, since he can get no peacefrom his harem of bickeringimmortal wives. Fair Warn-ing: “Manos” is so bad thatit’s challenging to fi nish.Watch with funny friends,or pick up the “Mystery Sci-ence Th eater 3000” version, which is almost the sameexperience.
