WAKE COUNTY ECONOMIC DRIVERS
THE INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM
The Research Triangle region has long been associated with innovation, thanks to corporate tech giants like IBM and Cisco in Research Triangle Park and more recently Red Hat and Citrix in downtown Raleigh, but within the last few years, the region has emerged as a hotbed of innovation springing out of the local startup community.
Raleigh alone is home to more than 500 startup companies, totaling 2,500 jobs in a wide range of industry sectors. Companies in Raleigh raised over $175,000,000 in capital in 2015, attesting to the fact that the startup scene is here to stay. Then there were the companies that had left the startup stage and were acquired—in 2015 Raleigh company acquisitions totaled over $1,100,000,000.
The innovation ecosystem has spread from the founding Research Triangle Park (RTP) in 1959, which is about 14 miles from the subject building. RTP is one of the most transformational public-private partnerships in our nation’s history. The Park, a 7,000-acre development, is home to more than 170 companies, including everything from Fortune 100 multinational R&D operations to freshly hatched university spin-outs.
It’s also the biggest economic driver for the region, home to 38,000 full-time knowledge workers and a model for innovation, education and economic development that has been studied and applied around the world.
It has Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners, recipients of the U.S. Presidential Award, and of the National Science Foundation Award. The UPC (Universal Product Code) and 3D ultrasound technology were both pioneered in the Park.
WORLD CLASS UNIVERSITIES
The region is home to three world class universities: North Carolina State University (Raleigh and about a mile from the subject building); Duke University (Durham); and University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill). Together they have about 75,000 graduate and undergraduate students. UNC and Duke also have large scale medical schools that help propel the world class health care reputation of the Research Triangle. In addition to the major universities, there are six other colleges and universities with a total student population of about 16,000. Wake Technical Community College and Durham Technical Community College have student populations of about 50,000.
