EUCHARISTIC VISITORS

St. David’s Eucharistic Visitors are available to bring Communion to any parishioner or family member who is unable to attend church to receive the Eucharist. We serve those who are regularly home-bound as well as those in nursing homes; and we visit parishioners in hospitals or rehab facilities – anywhere that is convenient for the parishioner and his or her family members. The service includes the lessons of the day and special prayers, if requested by the parishioner. In addition to the service itself, we also bring copies of the most recent church bulletins and keep those visited up to date on church activities. Those we call on are glad to be reminded that their parish family cares deeply about them and is praying for their speedy recovery. If you or a loved one would like to receive the Eucharist when unable to attend regular church services, please call Rev. Anne Elizabeth (770-963-6084; [email protected]) or contact Tony Cobourn (770-992-6019; [email protected]) or Allison Wilson (770-993-9766; [email protected]) directly.

WHAT IS STEPHEN MINISTRY?

WHAT IS STEPHEN

MINISTRY? Our congregation’s Stephen Ministry equips lay people to provide confidential, on-to-one Christian care to individuals in our congregation and community who are experiencing difficulties in their lives.

A STEPHEN MINISTER IS… A child of God who walks beside a person who is

hurting. A parish member with gifts for caregiving who was

carefully selected to serve in this role. A lay person who has received 50 hours of training in

providing emotional and spiritual care. A caring, Christian friend who listens, cares, prays,

supports, and encourages. Someone who will “be there” for his or her care receiver,

meeting faithfully for about an hour each week, for as long as there’s a need.

STEPHEN MINISTERS CARE FOR

PEOPLE FACING TOUGH TIMES We all experience challenges in life—times when we could benefit from the support of a caring Christian friend.

Stephen Ministers are ready to provide the emotional and spiritual care we need when faced with a crisis or difficulty such as... • Loss of a loved one • Hospitalization • Divorce or separation • Loneliness or discouragement • Spiritual crisis • Unemployment or a job crisis • A terminal illness • Incarceration • Aging • Birth, adoption, miscarriage, or infertility • A chronic illness • Relocation • Recovery after an accident or disaster • And many more Stephen Ministry is a confidential ministry: The identity of those receiving care and what takes place in each caring relationship remain private. For further information, contact Reverend Anne Elizabeth Swiedler (770-993-6084, ext. 124) or one of our Stephen Leaders, Johnnie Hall (770-993-5875) or Janet Conrad (770-475-2097).

What’s Happening With St. Aidan’s Guild? It’s summer and many of the ministry teams at St. Aidan’s have taken a break…but not St. Aidan’s Guild! We have been hard at work evaluating the results of our Natural Church Development survey and developing goals for the future growth of St. David’s. Subcommittees have been formed to look at several important elements of our minimum factor, Need Oriented Evangelism. We are asking questions about how we reach our community, how we welcome newcomers, how we help new members make connections in the parish, how we encourage our members to invite friends to join them at church events and worship, and how we share our personal story of how God is working in our lives. All these things are components of Evangelism.

We are also looking at how we build community within our parish and how we enrich our own spirituality through ministries, small groups, Bible studies and the sharing in the daily activities of the parish. Please notice that our new members to St. David’s have blue ribbons on their name tags. We ask that you all make an effort to greet and get to know our new members and each other! Remember to wear your own name tags so we can all begin to connect names and faces! As we approach fall, you will see some new things happening. We hope you will join us on this journey to release the God-given potential for growth and new life at St. David’s church through education, invitation, and partnership. We ask for your prayers for the members of St. Aidan’s as we work and plan for the coming months.

Honduras Miss ion Team

The Honduras Mission Team has just completed its second mission trip of the year with the return of the “youth mission” late in June. Pam Ferrand, our Honduras Mission leader for the past year also led the young people (and several adults) on the June mission trip. Pamm has

now retired as the Honduras Mission Team chairperson and Carolyn and Dan Powers will now chair this important outreach effort that St. David’s does so much to support. We want to thank Pamm for the tremendous work that she gave the mission during the past year. Thank you Pamm! Carolyn and Dan are currently immersing themselves in the full task of organizing, administrating, understanding, and continuing funding for this mission. It has touched many lives and been very successful since its inception in 2004. The primary focus of the coming year will be to organize for the 2012 February and June trips to Honduras and to work with the church leadership to reorganize the method of funding the Mission. We will be working to create fellowship opportunities to raise the level of consciousness for not only the Honduras Mission, but the Mission Board‘s broadly based outreach programs in general. We currently are planning to participate in a fellowship event with several other churches at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church this October. Details as to date, theme and expectations will follow in subsequent communications. We welcome all interested missionaries and sponsors to join with us in making the Honduras Mission Team, as well as the Mission Board, an ongoing success story. If you have questions or would like to join our Honduras Building Mission team contact: Carolyn Powers ([email protected]; 770 442 0309) or Dan Powers ([email protected]; 770 442 0309)

ADULT FORMATION

www.stdavidchurch.org

Adult Educat ion: EfM has

openings th is fa l l The Education for Ministry (EfM) program, an Adult Christian Education opportunity, is currently registering new members for class beginning Monday, September 12, 2011. EfM is a distance-learning theological education program developed in 1975 by the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Participants commit one year at a time to meet regularly in seminars led by a trained mentor (Betty Cunningham). Completion of the program takes four years. First-year students study the Old testament; second-year students study the New Testament;

third-year students study church history; and fourth-year students study theology. Together, students discuss the reading materials, reflect theologically, worship together, and share their spiritual journeys. Students are responsible for their own learning (i.e., no tests or papers) and are obliged to regularly attend class. St. David’s has held EfM classes for the past 25 years. The class meets every Monday, from 6:45-9:00 p.m., September 12 through May 21, at St. David’s in the Bethany Room. If you are interested in participating in EfM, please contact Betty Cunningham at [email protected] or 770-309-3994. The cost of the class for one year is $350. The deadline for application is August 8, 2011.

The Rector ’s Course in Spir i tual Direct ion

Ken Swanson will be offering his course in Spiritual Direction again this year. It will begin on Monday, September 5th, and run for thirty-two weeks. Dr. Swanson has taught this course for over twenty-five years. The class will meet on Monday evenings for two hours, every other week. The first hour will be small group discussion, and in the second hour Dr. Swanson will teach sixteen specific prayer disciplines, highlighting the historical and theological context of each discipline. Everyone who participates in the course must make a commitment to set aside one hour every day, to practice the prayer, do assigned reading and keep a journal. Because this demands tremendous commitment, he requires an interview with everyone who wants to take the course. So if you are interested, send him an email at [email protected] to set up an appointment.

Ladies Thursday Morning

Bible Study

Save the Date - Sept. 8th when The Thursday Morning

Ladies’ Bible Study launches their new study for the Fall entitled: “The Return to Jerusalem”—A Study of Ezra, Esther, and Nehemiah. This is the Old Testament “made understandable”! Join us and learn the fascinating story of how the people of Judah (who had been exiled in Babylon) return to Jerusalem to begin the daunting task of rebuilding their Temple and city. Meanwhile, the Book of Esther is the tale of those Jews who did not return to Jerusalem, and it is a romantic and suspense-filled story of a beautiful exiled Jewish woman who becomes queen of Persia and saves her people from destruction. You don’t have to be a Bible expert to enjoy this class. Beginners welcomed! We laugh and hug and

drink coffee and study—and we have a place for you! Every Thursday morning 9:30—11:00 upstairs in the Bethany room (upstairs back hallway). Call Kim Freeman 770 442-3128 for details.

Bishop Nominating Committee wants to hear from you

The Committee for Nominations for the 10th Bishop of Atlanta has scheduled listening sessions around Middle and North Georgia starting June 23 and concluding July 17 in order to gather material for a written profile that describes

the diocese to applicants.

The special election to identify Bishop J. Neil Alexander’s successor has been scheduled for June 2, 2012, at the Cathedral of St. Philip. (Individuals who are clergy members of or delegates to the 105th Annual Council in November

will be eligible to vote in the bishop election.)

Listening sessions will allow for the committee to learn what three separate groups of Episcopalians—laypeople, priests and deacons—have to say about the Diocese of Atlanta. The sessions will be facilitated by members of the Committee

for Nominations, who will seek discussion and responses to some general questions including:

What is going well in the Diocese of Atlanta?

What are the challenges in the Diocese of Atlanta?

What are the characteristics you seek in our next bishop?

How do you see the spiritual nature of the diocese changing ?

What kind of diocese do we need to become?

Our committee hopes that you will be able to attend a listening session. If you are unable to attend a session, you will have the opportunity to respond to the questions in writing. More information can be found on

www.atlbishopsearch.org.

Prayer of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta O God, you lead your Church into all truth: Give the guiding presence of your Holy Spirit to those who have dedicated themselves to your service in our search for the 10th Bishop of the Diocese of Atlanta. May our prayers and discernment be in accord with the mission you have given us to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ. May our next bishop be a person of prayer who is present to us as pastor and teacher while prophetically calling us to the ministry of justice, peace, and love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. This prayer was prepared by the Diocese of Atlanta Standing Committee. An additional prayer for the election of a bishop can be found on page 818 of The Book of Common Prayer.
