First Reading: Corinthians 4:5-15

A reading from St. Paul to the Corinthians. Your blessing father…

Brothers and Sisters:

For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves

as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, ‘Let light shine out of

darkness’, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the

glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this

extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted

in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but

not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death

of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while

we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of

Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in

you. But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with

scripture ‘I believed, and so I spoke’ we also believe, and so we speak, because we

know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will

bring us with you into his presence.

Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more

people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

Gospel Reading: John 1:35-42

The Apostle Writes:

The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched

Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, ‘Look, here is the Lamb of God! ’ The two disciples

heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them

following, he said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’ They said to him, ‘Rabbi’

(which translated means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’ He said to them,

‘Come and see.’ They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained

with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who

heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first

found his brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which is

translated Anointed).

He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of

John. You are to be called Cephas’ (which is translated Peter).

FOOD FOR THOUGHT John 13: 31 – 35

The Apostle John says: WhenJudas the Iscariot had gone out,Jesus said to his disciples,“Now the Son of Man has

been glorified, and God has beenglorified in him. If God has beenglorified in him, God will alsoglorify him in himself and willglorify him at once. Little chil-dren, I am with you only a littlelonger. You will look for me;and as I said to the Jews so nowI say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ I give you anew commandment, that youlove one another. Just as I have

loved you, you also should loveone another. By this everyonewill know that you are my disci-ples, if you have love for one an-other.”Love is the greatest command-

ment ever given to mankind be-cause it is through love that weare bound to God. We hearabout the NEW COMMAND-MENT that Jesus gives us.Jesus tells us, “I give you a NewCommandment, that you loveone another. Just as I have lovedyou, you also should love oneanother.” What does Jesus meanby this new commandment?Aren’t we told about lovingGod, loving thy neighbor, andhonoring our mother and fatherin the Old Testament? These arepart of the Ten Commandments. So what does Jesus mean bythis? To understand this newcommandment, we must look atthe love Jesus had for His disci-ples. How did He love them?Jesus gave all He had for

those He loved. There wasnothing selfish about His love. All we need to do is to look atHis disciples. There were nolimits to His love. He lovedthem as He loves all of us. Withall of our shortcomings, sinful-ness, downfalls—- with all ofour doubts, questions and weak-

Please know that confession is available be-fore liturgies. You may also call me to set upan appointment. We will be scheduling confes-sions throughout the season of Lent in conjunc-tion with Eucharistic Adoration. These timeswill be published in the bulletin as well as an-nounced at Divine Liturgy.

IN OUR PRAYERSPlease keep in your prayers Alan Sacilowski,

Donny Pizzi, Mrs. Rose Kouri, Betty Antrilli, and Bonnie Sabatini. We ask Almighty God tobless them with good health so that they mayjoin us in the Church and give glory andthanksgiving to God. Please notify the Churchoffice of any family member who is ill so thatwe may remember them in our daily prayersand on our altar of intentions.

nesses Jesus still loves us. He loves us so muchothat He died on the cross so that we may live for-ever. Most of us probably think that love should bring

us nothing but happiness—-isn’t that what love isall about—-to feel good and to be happy? Forthose of us who are older and wiser, we know thatthis is not the case. We know that with greatlove comes great pain. Jesus knew and under-stood His disciples and with this understanding Hestill loved them. It is similar to when a couplefirst starts dating and everything is perfect and heor she says this is the one of my dreams…Thenthey marry and live together and all of a suddenthey begin to see each other’s weaknesses, theirmoods, their bad habits and irritabilities and theyno longer see each other at their best. This is whatwe call humanity. We are not perfect. We are notimmune from bad moments that reveal our humanshortcomings. If we were perfect, there would beno need for God and it is this that we must remem-ber. It is when we see ourselves for who we are—the good and the bad—-we realize that we makemistakes along the road. After all is not every daya learning experience? And when we see our badside don’t we say to ourselves, “I hope that personwill forgive me? I hope that person still lovesme?” This is why this New Commandment is soimportant and this is why Jesus demands this com-mandment be followed by each of His disciplesand followers.Jesus lived with His disciples - He knew who

would betray Him, who would deny Him, and whowould leave Him alone on His way to Golgotha. And yet with all of this knowledge Jesus contin-ued to love them.Jesus showed us that we must love not for

what we want people to be or what we imaginethem to be but for who they are. Jesus lovedwith forgiveness. How many of us had argumentswith those we love or have been victims of insults, gossip, or unjust remarks? How much energy dowe waste by ignoring those who hurt us or fight-ing with those who treated us badly; letting thoseevents fester inside us only to destroy our spiritand our soul? Jesus taught us that in order for

love to endure, it must be built on forgivenessor else love is nothing. No one ever said being a follower of Jesus

would be an easy road. No one ever said that theteachings and lessons Jesus gives us would not bedifficult. But what we have been told is that if wedo take these teachings, follow through with themand we make them our own, our reward will begreat with God. May we all strive for this lovethat Jesus speaks about. May we practice thisNew Commandment of love to others so that wewill be afforded the joy that God will one day giveto us. May we look at the crucifix and say to our-selves, “I love you Jesus; help me to be like you toforgive and to love.”
