I started the 100 Mandalas Challenge to explore the creative possibilities within a circle and discovered so much more: creating mandalas is a powerful tool for relaxing, healing, and cultivating joy. When Im not creating mandalas, I enjoy collage and art journaling, photography, and Ikebana (Japanese Flower arranging). I live in New England with my Brazilian husband, Fernando and son Loki.

What is a mandala?The word mandala in Sanskrit loosely means circle or center. The mandala can be found in a wide range of religious and philosophical traditions particularly Buddhism.

Carl S. Jung, Swiss psychoanalyst introduced the use of mandalas as a tool for understanding ones inner landscape of ideas and feelings. In his own daily practice of drawing mandalas, he explored how the drawings helped him to better understand and integrate his life stories.

Jung wrote:

I sketched every morning in a notebook a small circular drawing,...which seemed to correspond to my inner situation at the time...Only gradually did I discover what the mandala really is...the Self, the wholeness of the personality, which if all goes well is harmonious. - Carl Jung, Memories, Dreams, Reflections, pp 195-196.

In working with his patients, Jung had them draw mandalas. Often these drawings helped the patient to express themselves at times when finding the words was a challenge. Once these emotions are drawn out onto the page, they become unlocked.

As you sit down to color these mandalas watch your thoughts and feelings. Consider the center of the mandala as representing you and as you work your way to the edge consider the relationships in your life and the world at large. What connections emerge?

Coloring is known to help reduce stress, ease anxiety, boost creativity, not to mention its fun! Why is it so powerful? It is a simple way to change our focus from our worries and responsibilities onto something that is beautiful.

About this coloring bookA community of mandala enthusiasts have gathered around a challenge called the 100 Mandalas Challenge. The challenge is to create 100 mandalas in 100 days. The challenge encourages one to make time each day for creativity.
