10 Microsoft Innovation Center Annual Report 2009-2010 Fall

eportMicrosoft Innovation Center Report 2009-2010 vol.6 Aizu IT Summer Forum 2009September 18th, 2009,The University of Aizu

The Aizu IT Summer Forum, held each year at the University of Aizu, isone of the activities based on a standard agreement between theuniversity, Microsoft Co. Ltd., Japan, and F-COM Co. Ltd. to contribute tothe revitalization of the local IT industry in the Aizu area of FukushimaPrefecture. Microsoft, on the executive committee for the Aizu ITSummer Forum, sent instructors for the forum as it has for the past twoyears. Instructors explained Microsofts cloud computing strategy, whichcenters on Windows Azure.

Aizu Forum to Deliver the Latest IT Information

Marks Third Year Established 16 years ago, the University of Aizu (Public UniversityCorporation), is the rst Japanese university specialized in computerscience and engineering. To tie the latest technology to the promotionof local industry and generation of new industries, the universityestablished the Research Center for Advanced Information Science andTechnology in April of this year, which focuses on three main areas:space information science, local environment and medical engineering. Also in April, at the International Collegiate Programming Contest heldin Sweden, the University of Aizu advanced to the nal round and tooksecond place only to Tokyo University among Japanese universities. Inaddition to these activities, the university has actively been engaged indelivering IT information and social action programs, including PC

Koshien, a nationwide IT contest that the university offers for highschool students.

In order to contribute to the local IT industry, the University of Aizumade a standard agreement in 2006 with Microsoft Co. Ltd., Japan, which operates business all over the world, and F-COM Co. Ltd., which isrooted in and active in the Aizu area. As a part of this agreement, theentities hold the Aizu IT Forum every year.

The goal of revitalizing the IT industry inside and outside theprefecture has met with agreement from both Microsoft and F-COM,said Shigeaki Tsunoyama (Chairperson of the Executive Committee forthe Aizu IT Summer Forum; President, The University of Aizu), And aforum like this one has become possible. The trigger to plan the forumwas one persons suggestion that Aizu might have a better environment

for a forum than Davos, where the World Economic Forum is held. Icertainly wont compare this to the Davos Forum, but our forum is in itsthird year, and I am happy to say that its rmly established now.

The Aizu IT Summer Forum was an all-day meeting focused on thelatest IT technology. After three keynote/special lectures, four sessionswere held in each of three separate breakout meetings: the cloud track,

Web track and venture/local area track. Lecturers from various ITcompanies and research institutions communicated information on thelatest technologies. With many companies and groups listed assupporting institutions and/or sponsors, the forum had a number of attendees from within and outside Fukushima prefecture.

In todays economic situation, there is a call for universities andbusinesses to cooperate in contributing to local regions, said ShigeakiTsunoyama (Chairperson of the Executive Committee for the Aizu ITSummer Forum; President, The University of Aizu), Particularly, there isa demand for the latest information, and in addition to our dailyeducation and research activities, holding a forum like this one is of great signi cance. People active on the front lines of the IT industryfrom within Fukushima, nationally and internationally are here as

lecturers. We hope to successfully establish this forum as a place wherethe exchange of the latest technological information can take place.

Cloud Computing Leads the Way to New Communication PossibilitiesOn the executive committee, Microsoft participates in the Aizu ITSummer Forum and provides lecturers.

Following Shigeaki Tsunoyama (Chairperson of the ExecutiveCommittee for the Aizu IT Summer Forum; President, The University of Aizu), Shunichi Kajisa (CTO, Microsoft Co. Ltd., Japan) took the rostrum.Kajisa, a keynote speaker for three years running, has consistentlydescribed new business possibilities that result from Microsofts effortsin interoperability and Software + Service (S+S).

Im happy to meet with everyone here again, Kajisa started hiskeynote speech, I hope I can continue to stand before you as atechnology of cer and deliver the latest technology information. At the

rst Forum, In addition to the meaning of interoperability, weintroduced Silverlight, a new technology necessary to next generationsystems and to improve the user experience in Software + Services. Lastyear, we introduced clouds, the future direction of Microsoft, and Italked about Microsoft initiatives to create new business opportunity inthe Software + Service sector. This year, I will explain how cloudcomputing leads the way to new communication possibilities.

At the keynote speech, two platforms in the current focus of attention, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, were introduced.Windows 7 is the fastest, easiest and safest client operating system (OS)to date. Windows Server 2008 R2 is, on the other hand, a server OS that, while maintaining advanced security, reliability and performance, enables users to streamline work efforts, including access managementand enhanced control, and reduce costs by providing new features foradvanced power management, compatibility with new logic processors, enhanced virtualization functions, as well as a synergistic effect with

    Windows 7.In addition to Windows

Server 2008 R2, to cope withthe recent trends of organizations data centertransition, Microsoft plans tooffer Azure ServicesPlatform, a new platform onwhich the data centeroperates in a cloud.

    13/24

    11

Right now, Microsoft is operating large and secure data centersaround the world, said CTO Kajisa, So far, Microsofts cloudenvironments provided xed services like Windows Live SkyDrive. From now on, however, Azure Services Platform, including WindowsAzure, SQL Azure and .Net Services, will be provided as a platform.Microsofts data centers would make it possible to provide differentservices to each organization.

Kajisa also spoke about Microsofts efforts towards interoperability. As outlined in the 2006 Windows Principles (Choice, Opportunity andInteroperability), Microsoft has developed each product and servicebased on the interoperability principles (announced in 2008). Theprinciples promised open connectivity to Microsoft products, customerdata portability, support for the standards and l iberal efforts. With AzureServices Platform, Microsoft has made many kinds of developmentlanguages and cross-system interoperability a reality.

Introduction to Windows Azure Seminar Draws AttentionMicrosoft sent a lecturer to the cloud track breakout meeting as well asto the keynote lecture at the Aizu IT Summer Forum. Hiroyuki Watanabe(Academic Evangelist, Academic Connections, Academic EvangelismGroup, Developer & Platform Evangelism, Microsoft Co. Ltd., Japan),from Fukushima Prefecture, explained Windows Azure in detail.

Watanabe rst showed the audience a concept diagram andexplained Microsofts future vision.

What direction will Microsoft, engaged in many kinds of activities,be taking in the future? That answer is here, said Watanabe, We aregoing to provide many kinds of new technologies and platforms tocreate an environment that offers easy-to-use user experiences on anydevice, such as PC, telephone and TV to access services provided in thecloud.

Watanabe explained the merits of cloud computing by comparingit to a transportation system. If someone uses their own car, they cantravel on their own time and on the roads they choose, but they need topay high costs for maintenance and fuel. With transportation systemslike trains or buses, on the other hand, the time and route are xed butthe cost is lower because of its mass usage. The same thing goes withthe vision of Microsofts cloud computing, Microsofts providing datacenters for users would allow costs to be reduced.

Microsoft invested 500 million dollars to construct data centers toprovide Azure Services Platform centering on Windows Azure, and isadding about 10,000 servers every month to its data centers.

Watanabe also emphasized that one of the features of AzureServices Platform is the ability to exibly connect to on-premise(in-house) or other hosting services.

The greatest feature of applications on Windows Azure is,Watanabe continued, its advanced connectivity to applications onon-premise servers and hosting services. For example, the service can beprovided in a cloud, while enabling retrieval of data, including personalinformation, only on the on-premise server. The applications can beplaced in locations based on the needs of the organization.

Expecting the latesttechnological informationcommunicated from a local native, many participants attendedWatanabes breakout session. Sincethe question and answer period didnot nish in the time allotted,Watanabe attended the fellowship

banquet and exchanged opinionswith engineers from many parts of Japan.

14 Microsoft Innovation Center Annual Report 2009-2010 Fall

eportMicrosoft Innovation Center Report 2009-2010 vol.8Microsoft Innovation Day 2009; Best Commercial Business Award Announced at Microsoft Innovation Day 2009

December 1, 2009,Tokyo Conference Center Shinagawa Grand Hall

In its third year, the Microsoft Innovation Award 2009 ceremony washeld at Microsoft Innovation Day 2009.Shunichi Kajisa (CTO, Microsoft Co. Ltd., Japan) and Akihiro Oba(General Manager, Developer & Platform Evangelism, Microsoft Co. Ltd.,Japan) announced the Best Commercial Business Award. They held apress conference on the same day, introducing two new strategies tosupport venture businesses: Innovation Academy, and the start of EarlyAdoption Support Programs.

Partners Came Together Who Contribute to Domestic InnovationMicrosoft Innovation Day 2009 is an IT conference based on thekeyword innovation, providing a place to gather information and build

networks for IT venture companies who utilize Microsoft technologiesfor their businesses. The third conference had over 200 applicants, including IT venture companies and many others involved in creatinginnovation nationwide.

We had many people participate in todays event, said ShunichiKajisa (CTO, Microsoft Co. Ltd., Japan), those who would like to startnew businesses, start-up companies that have just started business, ITventure companies, and our partners who support venture companies. Iam certain that all of you here support todays domestic IT industry andhold the key to the future of the industry. I hope this event is fruitful foreveryone here to gather new information and expand your businessnetworks.

Based on its mission, to help people and businesses around the

world realize their full potential, Microsoft has long been engaged in itsCorporate Citizensip activities. Microsoft Innovation Day 2009 is held asone part of Microsofts IT Venture Program to vitalize local areas andsupport IT industry. The event is an opportunity to meet the supportingbusinesses, public alliance organizations, network partners andparticipating businesses of Microsoft BizSpark, Microsoft InnovationCenter local alliance organizations (Gifu, Asahikawa, and Sapporo), andall Microsofts domestic and international partners in one place.

Since Microsoft was founded in 1975, our most importantpartners have been the developers. By working together withdevelopers, many kinds of innovations were born, which enabled manyof our customers to make use of IT, emphasized Kajisa , If you lookback through our history, venture businesses have created innovation

particularly when we were in economic climates like the present.Microsoft will not reduce its budget for corporate citizenship activitiesand will continue to make every effort to support you.

For Insights on the Future Direction of Technology and BusinessMany participants attended Microsoft Innovation Day not only for theMicrosoft Innovation Award Best Commercial Business Award ceremony, but to hear the keynote speech about technology and business.

At this year s technology session, Akihiro Oba (General Manager,Developer & Platform Evangelism, Microsoft Co. Ltd., Japan), who justreturned from Professional Developers Conference (PDC) 2009 in theUnited States, introduced Microsofts latest technological trendsincluding cloud computing. As announced at PDC 2009, Microsoft plansto start providing Windows Azure in January 2010.

Cloud computing is a very important keyword to understanding

the future path of IT, spoke Oba, However, when we say cloud, everyone tends to focus only on cost savings, but this is not really thebest merit to consider. When you think about the users who actually useit, an easy-to-use user experience is a must. To those businessesconsidering adopting this technology, what is important is creating anenvironment of coexistence, in which the right people in the right jobscan make use of the clouds and on-premise servers. For the developers, working in familiar and integrated development environments is ideal.Microsoft is carefully considering all of this, and will provide aneasy-to-use cloud computing environment for all the users, businessesand developers.

In his session, Oba also introduced two other services that werepresented at PDC 2009: Microsoft Pinpoint, which is a marketplacewhere applications and services are sold online; and code-namedDallas, a new data provider service that delivers giant data sets held byorganizations such as government, NPOs, and businesses for free or withfees. Oba outlined that using these services provided in a cloud can leadto new business opportunities.

In his business-focused keynote speech, Masaki Yoshida (President,Akinai Research Institute), one of Microsoft BizSparks network partners, took the podium. His lecture, entitled, TheEntrepreneur The Shortest Route toBusiness Success, outlined the mentalpreparedness and strategies of anentrepreneur, and was interspersed withstories of his own experiences and true-to-life business examples. Yoshida encouragedthe many participants to use this event toexpand their business networks.

Microsoft Innovation Award 2009: Best Commercial Business Award Following the keynote addresses, the winners of Microsoft InnovationAward 2009 were introduced. Microsoft Innovation Award is honored tocompanies that provide groundbreaking solutions based on originalideas developed into businesses. In 2009, ve companies receivedawards for outstanding performance. The Best Commercial BusinessAward was presented to one company in front of a large audience of participants.

The Microsoft Innovation Award 2009 Best Commercial BusinessAward was presented to OneBe, Inc.s TrustDelete, a solution that allowsa user to remotely delete data stored in his/her stolen or lost computer.
