TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY United Way of Greater Atlanta’s Tocqueville Society, the largest Tocqueville

Society in the United States, is a committed leadership group making a measurable and sustainable impact on child well-being in Greater Atlanta through the connected efforts of their philanthropy and influence. The society is named for the 19th century French political thinker and historian, Alexis de Tocqueville, who, in his writings, recognized the importance of voluntary action on behalf of the common good. COLE WOMEN UNITED Cole Women United was established in 1999. Started by three respected

YOUTH UNITED Youth United (YU) develops and nurtures the next generation of

philanthropic leaders by creating unique leadership and community engagement opportunities for youth in grades 9-12.

YU is led by a trained youth board and committees of high school students who have a passion for serving the community and want to develop leadership skills. YU’s student participants lean toward projects that make an impact in the area of education; from hosting a pop-up grocery shop for families at an elementary school to planning a College Workshop partnering with LINC young professionals. Each year, YU engages over 450 students through at least eight projects, including our signature Youth United Kickoff and student-led projects.

VOLUNTEER INVOLVEMENT PROGRAM The Volunteer Involvement Program (VIP) started in 1992 to identify,

recruit and place diverse leaders from Greater Atlanta into policy making roles to enhance the effectiveness of nonprofit agencies. Since its inception, more than 2,600 graduates have provided service to more than 350 nonprofit governance boards and committees throughout Greater Atlanta.

WHAT IS VIP? United Way’s VIP is a training program offered in spring, summer and

fall. It is designed to develop and enhance leadership skills and increase volunteer participation in nonprofit boards across Greater Atlanta communities. VIP gives participants the tools to serve as effective board members of local nonprofit agencies. Workshops include fundraising, strategic planning, marketing, financial and legal decision making, and more. Applications are solicited community-wide. The selection committee reviews applications and selects no more than 25 individuals per class. The selection criteria is designed to recruit a group of demonstrated leaders who are diverse in their ethnicity, profession and community service. Upon acceptance into the program, a $100 Board Commitment Fee is due at the first training session and $400 Fundraising exercise is due by the end of the program.

self-confidence and reading skills -or-

• Three job seekers get MARTA cards to get to and from their job interviews

$10 per week / $520 annually• Provides three high school students with college prep assistance so they

can learn how to tackle the SAT -or-

• 30 days of rent payment assistance to help a family avoid eviction

$20 per week / $1,040 annually (Includes Cole Women United and African-American Partnership)• Provides 25 hours of training to help a homeless veteran get certified in a

trade -or-

• 90 hours of home repair for seniors

$10,000 annually (Includes Tocqueville Women United)• Provides one Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site that will help put

$400,000 back into the pockets of working families and nearly $1 million back into the community -or-

• Provides three youth with access to a comprehensive after-school program that will provide academic enrichment services and mentor support

$25,000 annually • Provides move-in support for ten veterans (includes: application fees, first

month’s rent, security and utilities deposits as well as continued case management and follow-up) -or-

• Helps 20 people avoid emergency room visits through the community health worker program – saving Greater Atlanta taxpayers $30,000/year

CHILD WELL-BEING IMPACT FUNDToday, nearly half a million children in the Greater Atlanta region live in communities with low child well-being. Start here: unitedwayatlanta.org/give When we launched our Child Well-Being Movement in 2017, Greater Atlanta had nearly 500,000 children living in areas of low and very low child well-being. After two years of investments, partnerships, and collective action, we saw significant improvements—more than 82,000 children attained well-being. But we still have a ways to go before we can say that all the children are well. United Way of Greater Atlanta is working with communities, businesses, partners, nonprofit organizations, donors, volunteers and more to ensure every child and family can reach their full potential regardless of zip code.

Donating to the United Way of Greater Atlantas Child Well-Being Impact Fund, helps ensure lasting collaborative solutions to the critical problems that stand between us and a better quality of life for children and families. Impact Fund dollars are invested where you live and work in the 13 counties throughout Greater Atlanta. Our Child Well-Being Impact Fund puts money to work where it can do the most good for children, families and communities.
