Travel Tip: Spring Mountain RanchNestled in the Red Rock Conservation area west of las Vegas

you’ll find the historic Spring Mountain Ranch. The Ranch is only 15 miles west of las Vegas and is shadowed in the late afternoon by the colorful cliffs of the Wilson Range. It sits at about 3,800 feet which brings the temperature 10-15 degrees cooler than las Vegas.

The park was once a working ranch and retreat for previous owners like German actress Vera Krupp and millionaire Howard

Hughes. The rich history is preserved and shared with the public through guided and self-guided tours, historical re-enactments and family events.

After visiting the house, consider utilizing the picnic area for an afternoon of relaxation and fun.

Spring Mountain Ranch is also the site of the Super Summer Theatre, which celebrates 36 years of providing the best seats under the stars. This September SCM will travel to the Ranch to enjoy “MOE” complete with transportation and show.

I am happy to announce that as of July 1, 2011 we have officially kicked off our ER Wait Time 30-Minute or less Pledge. Emergency medicine at Mesa View is all about compassion, skilled care and speed. We want you to find all three at your local hospital. Our experienced ER team, including physicians trained in emergency medicine, has made this 30-Minutes-or-less ER Service Pledge to the community. This pledge means that we have made a commit-ment to see our patients within 30 minutes of their arrival.

upon your arrival to our ER desk, the time of arrival is noted by the clerk. When the physician sees the patient, the time is documented by the ER staff. This pledge does not affect how patients will be prioritized. We will continue to provide immediate attention to the most severe cases.

Over the past several months we have been diligently tracking patient wait times in prepara-tion for this new pledge. I am proud to report that our wait times have consistently averaged less than 30 minutes.

This does not mean that you will be in and out in 30 minutes; we will take the necessary time to treat your illness or injury. The duration of each visit will vary.

As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions. Enjoy your summer. Kapua Conley, CEOMesa View Regional Hospital702-345-4280

Ingredients:8 hard-boiled eggs, peeled½ cup all-purpose flour1 lb seasoned pork sausage1 cup corn flake or bread crumbs

Preparation:Coat hard-boiled eggs with

flour, shake off excessDivide sausage into 8 equal

parts, shape each into thin patty. Wrap one sausage patty around each egg to cover.

Place crumbs on sheet of parchment paper. Roll sausage covered eggs in crumbs to coat; place on ungreased bak-ing sheet. Spray eggs with non-stick cooking spray.

Bake at 400 degrees about 20 minutes or until sausage is thor-oughly cooked and no longer pink. Cool slightly. Cut eggs into quarters to serve.

The eggs can be boiled, peeled and wrapped the day before.

TIP: Coating the eggs with flour helps the sausage stick to them as they cook. It also helps to dust your hands with flour when wrapping the eggs.

Dear Ellen,We have an 8-month-old puppy, and we are struggling with training her not to nip our ankles when she wants something. usually, she wants to play. How do we train her to use other methods to get our attention? ~Signed, Wearing Knee SocksDear Knee Socks,I suggest that you give your puppy plenty of play time, exercise, and attention at times when you initiate it. Realize that puppies need lots of playtime between naps! Meanwhile, start teaching her to “sit” on command and ask her to “sit” before play, meal, walks, etc. She will

learn that sitting is one way to get what she wants. Submit your pet-related questions for “Dear Ellen” to [email protected] or drop them by the Concierge Desk at the

Pioneer Center. We look forward to hearing from you! Ellen Gilmore is a Sun City homeowner and volunteer contributor. She is a staff member at Best Friends Animal Society,

where she works in outreach programs to help people provide a loving, forever home for their pets. She is also a certified pet dog trainer.

In The Spotlight: Chef Scott McGlinchey and Mandy Meyer For our July issue we focus our spotlight on Eureka Executive

Chef Scott McGlinchey and his wife, Mandy Meyer. Chef Scott has enthralled SCM residents for the past two years with his famous wine pairing dinners. If you’ve attended any of these fine dinners, you’ll remember Mandy as well, singing those lovely Irish ballads.

Chef Scott’s first restaurant employment experience was as a 14 year old at IHOP. He has had the opportunity to learn and enjoy his profession in many areas of the united States. As a “ski bum” in

Vail, Colorado he skied all day and worked at night In las Vegas in the 80’s he had his first Chef job at the Del Monaco room at the Riviera. While there he once prepared 4,000 hot dogs for the Holmes – Spinks championship fight. He then moved on to the Gourmet Room at the Sands.

He traveled next to Mandy’s hometown of Milwaukee where in 1989 he opened his own res-taurant “Heaven City”, ranked as one of the top fine dining establishments in the city with a rare four-star rating.

After 15 years at “Heaven City”, he and Mandy decided to open some small BBQ places and they continue to be Kansas City BBQ Society judges, in Mesquite and throughout the country. A temporary job in St. George brought them to our area and he was able to land his present position in March 2008.

Mandy has been singing professionally for most of her life and is presently looking for a guitar player to accompany her. She will continue singing at our wine pairing dinners.

Chef Scott said, “These Sun City wine pairing dinners are my favorite.” According to the in-creasingly large turnout at these events, they appear to be our favorite also. We look forward to our next dinner on July 20.

Over the past three months, the Knit Wits have had a lot of fun working together to make the up and coming ‘Christmas in July’ for Mesquite’s Highland Manor, a great success. Since March these crafters have been busily knitting and crocheting individual items for the gift baskets for the residents of the nursing home for their mid-year holiday gift-giving celebration.

The Knit Wits is a group designed for those who appreciate any sort of yarn art, be it knitting, crocheting, needlework, embroidery, etc. The

group is comprised of all levels of crafters, from beginners to highly experienced. The members all come together to help each other learn new stitches, read patterns, provide general friendship and share their love for these dying handicrafts. Both individual projects and group charity projects are done by the group’s members. Everyone is always welcome to come bring their latest projects to show or get help with a project should they get ‘stuck’. They welcome new members to join them for a weekly gathering of fun and friends!

The group meets every Tuesday from 11:00 - 2:00 (come and go as you wish during those hours) in the Arts & Crafts Room of the Rec Center. The Officers are: Jackie Turshinsky - Secretary/Treasurer, ursula Michnick- Vice President and Cindy Jensen - President. Anyone with questions can contact any of the officers for information.

The Sun City Knit Wits donate over 50 Handmade Lap Robes, Shawls and Capes for Highland Manor’s ‘Christmas in July’!

Neighborhood Watch News

All residents should be able to observe a caller before opening the door. use the door viewer allowing you to see outside your front door. Don’t allow strangers in your home. Many robberies occur in the victim’s home.

In addition, burglars sometimes try to come into a home in order to assess valu-ables and security measures for a planned burglary when you are not home. Ask repairmen and others who claim to have business inside to show identification for viewing through the door viewer. If you have the slightest doubt, telephone their office, getting the number from your directory. When you do admit a work-man or a salesperson you were expecting and did not know previously, do not leave them alone at any time.

If there is an emergency and someone asks to use your phone, ask them to wait outside while you place the call.

Tech Tip: Accessing Documents Online

Have you tried to log in to the SCM website and found that your password didn’t work? Here’s a quick tip to get you up and operating again. DO NOT request a change of password on line. Just call or visit Sydney at the Pioneer Center and she will correct the problem. This is the fastest and easiest way to resolve this issue. Asking for a password change on line will boot you out of the system and you will

have to start all over and enter All of your information again. Remember, just call or visit Sydney. She’s there to help!4

Here is a handy tip from Daryl Forgie:If your filter in the master bedroom makes noise when the HVAC comes on, open the vent and pull the tabs on the sides out to get a snug fit.

Volunteer Opportunity: Mesquite Community Theatre

Mesquite Community Theatre is in need of volunteers to work the box office. For those who are interested there will be two hours of training. Box office is open Thursday and Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Sat-urday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Shifts are strictly voluntary. Sign up for whatever you can work. Even 2 days a month would help.

Additionally, they could use some one with accounting background, to help with processing box office receipts only on the days following a show or play in the theatre.

Volunteers can call Barbara Vacarro at 346-4250 or by e mailing [email protected] or call the box office at 345-4499. Mesquite Community Theatre appreciates any time you can give.
