Rory McIlroy tees off this morning at

St Andrews hoping this will be the

year he finally wins the Alfred Dunhill

Links Championship.

The Northern Ireland golfer,

currently World No.6, finished runner-

up in 2009, 2011 and 2014 and says:

“Perhaps this is the year I can go one

better and end my season on a high.”

The four-time Major champion

has had a close relationship with the

Championship. In 2007, at 18, he

became the youngest player to earn

a European Tour card from tourna-

ment play when he finished third.

Tyrrell Hatton begins the defence

of his title on the Old Course at

the first to win back-to-back

Alfred Dunhill Championships.

Last year he shot a record 62, and

will be hoping for the same again.

good form. He said: “It’s the best I’ve

end of the season. But it will be great

to play a few rounds with my dad.

Three amigos play it for laughs on the Old Course

The wind whipping across the Old

Course carried the laughter of Jamie

Dornan, Matthew Goode and Brian

O’Driscoll as they enjoyed a light-

hearted practice round. All three

have made the cut before at the

Alfred Dunhill Links Championship -

and a laid-back practice round over

the Old Course put them in good

shape for the tournament.

“I felt good today, I hit it much

better than I usually do,” said Fifty

Shades of Grey star Dornan. “It’s

great to be back. I shouldn’t have

been able to play, but a movie I was

filming in Dublin was postponed, so

that freed me up to be here."

Dornan made the cut with pro

partner Tyrrell Hatton last year and

watched at close quarters as the

young Englishman claimed victory.

“It felt absolutely terrifying and that I

shouldn’t be there – but it was very

thrilling to be that close to Tyrrell

winning the first of hopefully many

events,” added Dornan. “It’d be great

to be in that position again."

Downton Abbey actor Matthew

Goode is looking forward to teeing it

up with former Ryder Cup player

David Howell in the Team Champi-

onship. “I’ve been a long-time fan of

'The Howler' through the Ryder Cup

and he is a very good pundit as well.

Hopefully I won’t get in his way.

“Most of my memories of Dunhill

are of good shots and bad shots,

then talking it out with the most

amazing array of people from busi-

ness, sport and arts.”

Rugby legend Brian O’Driscoll is

eager to make the cut for a second

time. “You’re not here to walk

around for five hours. You really

want to make the cut and have a

laugh in the process.”

Jamie Dornan, Matthew Goode and Brian O'Driscoll share a joke on the Swilken Bridge at St Andrews

Singer pals Brianand Ronan backon centre stage

Singer Brian McFadden is looking

forward to spending time with his

friend and former manager Ronan

Keating this week – but the Westlife

star claims his focus is on winning

the Team Championship.

McFadden made his debut at the

Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

last year and teed off with his friend

and professional partner Robert Rock,

Boyzone frontman Keating and

Peter Hanson.

Rock and McFadden will team up

again this year and tee off at Car-

noustie at 9:55 am. The Irishman –

who plays off a handicap of 12 –

insists his target is to improve on

2016, when he missed the cut.

McFadden said: “I’m competitive,

I want to win. As soon as you stand

on that first tee, it doesn’t matter

how much you have practised or

what you think you can do, it all

flies out of the window.

“Last year was the perfect start –

teeing off first at St Andrews, and not

just to have my good friend Robert

beside me but Ronan, too. Ronan

managed Westlife in 1998, so we’ve

been close friends for a long time.

“There was great banter going on

in that fourball, though I’m not sure

Peter knew what was going on!”

McFadden and Rock shot nine-

under in the opening round at the

Old Course, but the wheels came off

their challenge at Carnoustie.

The singer went on to reveal: “All

of a sudden we were three or four

over after nine holes and I was think-

ing ‘I don’t want to come last’. We

were lucky to finish one-over at

Carnoustie.

“In the end, we finished 20-under

After two European Tour wins, a

charge up the rankings and a new

baby, Tommy Fleetwood’s year

has been pretty good – but a win

at his favourite course would cap

it off perfectly.

The 26-year-old took six

weeks away from his sport and

spent five days in hospital with

fiancée Clare around the arrival

of their son Franklin.

And although the Englishman

expects some aspects off his game

to be a little unpredictable, he can’t

wait to start a tournament in

which he’s found form in the past.

He said: “It feels like you

haven't played for a year when

you come back. Distance control

might be a little bit out. You

know, I feel fine, my preparation

the last two days has been good.

“I always enjoy this tournament,

and yeah, I think there’s always a

bit more expectation on this

event because I've played well in

the past. I love the course of St

Andrews. It's my favourite but

that might have evened itself out

after six weeks off.”

He’ll tee off today with

American amateur Ogden Phipps

at St Andrews where he previ-

ously carded impressive rounds

of 62 and 63.

The World No.14 insists he has

always been confident of his ability

especially after victories in Dubai

in January and the French Open.

Fleetwood said: “This year has

been an accumulation of a lot of

things and some bold decisions

that paid off. Getting into the top

50 after my win at the beginning

of the year naturally gives you a

step up and once you are able to

play in the big tournaments

things can progress quickly. I also

loved the challenge, I was ready

for it.”

Dad Tommy hopes to topoff great year

in the Team Championship and

were on the cut line but there were

four teams on that and we lost on

the countback.

“It was a tough night. Rocky and

me just sat on the balcony of our

apartment just above the 18th at St

Andrews and stared out.

“Seeing how Danny Willett and

caddie Jonathan Smart played last

year to win The Masters made me

realise how high the standard is.

For us, it’s like winning a Major. My

goal is to make the cut and be there

on Sunday.”

Keating - who tees off today at

11:23 at the Old Course with partner

Lee Westwood in this year's Team

Championship - also has fond

memories of last year’s memorable

fourball with McFadden.

He said: “I love playing golf with

Brian. He’s as passionate about the

game as I am. He is a great golfer and

I loved playing with him. It's always

incredibly intimidating playing with

big-name pros, so going round with

a mate really helps.”

The Boyzone star’s finest moment

came in 2008 when he saw his

name at the top of the leaderboard

after day two at St Andrews. He

smiles: “It would be nice to repeat it.

It’s the only year I’ve made the cut.”

South African's landmark round at Kingsbarns was the highlight of 2012 victory

Golf has given Ian Bishop a new

focus after he lost both legs serving

as a Royal Marine, and he believes

for an amateur player the Alfred

Dunhill Links is as big as it gets.

The corporal’s world changed

forever when he stepped on an

improvised explosive device in

Afghanistan in 2009.

From that moment on Bishop,

above, began a courageous battle

which has seen him not just walk

again using two prosthetic legs,

but represent his country at golf

in the Simpson Cup, a Ryder Cup-

style match against disabled ser-

vicemen from the United States.

This week he reaches what he

describes as the “pinnacle” of his

achievement when he plays in

the Alfred Dunhill Links.

Bishop said: “I’m very lucky to

be involved in it. You won’t get

anything bigger for the amateur

golfer than the Alfred Dunhill

Links Championship.

“There had only been two or

three people who had been

wounded like this before, so

nobody really knew just how

able-bodied you could become.

“I was determined not to

spend 90 per cent of my time in a

wheelchair. I took up golf through

the On Course Foundation, set up

by John Simpson, who was Nick

Faldo’s manager.”

Bishop said golf helped him

master the use of his prosthetic

legs. “Even if you use a buggy,

you have to get out and walk on

undulating ground which helps

develop balance.”

Branden Grace believes his 2012

win at the Alfred Dunhill Links

Championship makes him a serious

contender to claim a second title

this year.

The 29-year-old South African

led from first to last five years ago -

opening with a course-record 12-

under 60 at Kingsbarns – before

finishing two shots clear of Denmark’s

Thorbjorn Olesen, who himself

went on to claim the title in 2015.

“To win around this place takes a

lot of patience,” he said. “I know the

courses, they don’t change that

much. I’ve got big expectations this

week. I think I’ve got a good chance

of being in contention.

"I feel like my game is in good

shape. When you come back to a

place like this where you’ve had

success you already feel much more

confident than at a normal tourna-

ment. It’s tough conditions this

week. It’s going to be a grind. But

having those past experiences are

really going to help me.”

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship celebrates links golf at its finest and is played over the Old Course at St Andrews, the Championship Course at Carnoustie and Kingsbarns Golf Links. The final round, after the cut is made on Saturday, is played over the Old Course.

With a total prize fund of US$5 million, there are two separate competitions - an indi-vidual professional tournament and the Team Championship, in which each professional is paired with an amateur.

A bridge too far?Defending champion Tyrrell Hatton

hit a course record 62 last year but

is staying coy about whether he can

repeat the feat this week.

Fans were thrilled when he carded

the course-equalling 10-under round

on the Old Course.

But after posing on the 18th

hole’s famous Swilken Bridge, Hatton

believes the weather will prove

crucial to hitting a historic 61.

Hatton said: “It certainly depends

on the conditions this year, if any-

one can better that. If they are calm,

then everyone's got a chance to do

it. But it's not something I'll go out

there trying to beat.

“You know, that was a really

special round to me, the lowest

round I ever shot. I’ll just take those

good vibes and go out there. It's

been windy the last few days so

hopefully the conditions ease up.”

Hatton will team up again with

Fifty Shades actor Jamie Dornan

and admits he thrives off the huge

number of supporters that follow

the Irishman.

He said: “He had a big following

last year. It's good. It's nice to play

in front of crowds and gives a bit of

an atmosphere.

“I know Jamie was a bit nervous

last year. But you know, that's what

it's all about.”

He may have been playing vital

practice rounds, but that didn’t stop

Matthew Fitzpatrick bringing his dog

along. The English pro’s family re-

triever Charlie watched on as he hit

shots in St Andrews and Kingsbarns

ahead of the Alfred Dunhill Links.

The world No.35 will be teeing

off on the Old Course at 10.17am

today, playing with South African

businessman Jeremy Ord. But with-

out his trusted pet, he’ll be hoping

to avoid driving into the ‘ruff’.

It’s one manand his dog…

Liam Johnston and Connor Syme

will tee off in this year’s Alfred Dunhill

Links as Scotland’s newest young

professionals.

This will be Johnston’s first pro

event and Syme’s second, following

the latter's impressive debut at the

Shane Warne is targeting making

the cut for the first time as he

looks forward to a reunion with

fellow ex-cricketers. The Australian

legend will team up with New

Zealand professional Ryan Fox at

St Andrews today.

He said: “It will be nice to meet

up with all the guys I used to play

against. I’ve been coming since

2003, I’ve never made the cut.

Hopefully this year, I feel my

game is good. You need luck on

the links.”

debut cheque of €29,000.

Earlier this year the pair were in

a group of young Scottish golfers

who travelled to South Africa for

competition and warm weather

training, thanks to support Scottish

Golf received from the Alfred Dunhill

Links Foundation and Aberdeen

Asset Management.

They dominated the African

Amateur Strokeplay Championship

at Leopard Creek, with Johnston, 24,

winning and Syme, 22, runner-up.

They also won the team competition

for the Leopard Trophy.

After his success, Johnston said:

“I can’t begin to describe how

amazing it felt. I hope it paid back all

the support my family and my coach

James Erskine have given me and

the trust Scottish Golf, Aberdeen

Asset Management and Alfred

Dunhill and Johann Rupert placed

in me, bringing me out with the

National Squad to South Africa.”

Syme, who is coached by his PGA

pro father, Stuart, was an amateur

when he played in the Alfred Dunhill

Links in 2014 aged just 19.

He said: “I will never forget that.

It gave me a real taste of the big

time and made me even more

determined to become a profes-

sional. So to be able to return to the

Dunhill three years on, as a pro, is a

dream come true.”Leopard Trophy winners Craig Ross, Connor Syme, Liam Johnston and Craig Howie with National Coach Ian Rae, centre

Curious mind leads Klitschko to golf

Shops out in front

Children from Kingsbarns Primary

School had a hoot as Eddie Pepperell

brought an owl along yesterday.

But it wasn’t a real bird, rather the

headcover for the Englishman’s

driver. He told how it was a present

from his girlfriend who believes he has

a passing resemblance to the owl.

Pepperell, 26, also revealed he won

an event aged 12 at Balgove course

in St Andrews.

In an intensive Q&A session, the

pupils gleaned that Pepperell

doesn’t break too many tees, gets

plenty of balls from his sponsor and

has an image of dog Gus sewn onto

his golf bag. His Hungarian Vizsla is

in St Andrews, sharing his hotel room.

He also told the excited children

how he’s played in 40 countries with

Leopard Creek in South Africa being

his favourite tournament venue.

The schoolkids wished him luck

before he tees off with former crick-

eter Mark Nicholas at Carnoustie.

Although one youngster won-

dered why his big golf bag didn't

have wheels…

Boxing legend Wladimir Klitschko

turned to golf to discover why he

was knocked out in one of the

sport’s biggest upsets.

The former world heavyweight

champion had lost his title to unfa-

voured South African Corrie Sanders

in 2003 and wanted to know why.

As he gets set to play in his second

hosted by the Old Course Hotel.

Runners-up, J&G Innes and

Ladybird Florists, have won two

VIP afternoon tickets at the Old

Course Hotel for the final day.

Meanwhile there are several great

offerings for spectators to enjoy in

St Andrews in Alfred Dunhill week.

The Adamson’s mixologist Joe

Cassidy has created a new cocktail

called ‘The Dunhill’ to mark the

Championship.

The St Andrews Brewing Com-

pany, which has returned the craft

of brewing to the town after 114

years, is offering 15 per cent off.

Just bring along a Links Times.

Fisher & Donaldson’s bakery is

making traditional cookies with the

Championship trophy on the icing.

And world-famous Jannetta’s

ice cream shop is collaborating with

Eden Mill distillery, using their Whisky

No 4, to create a new flavour ‘sláinte,’

which will be launched in the tented

village at the Old Course.

“Corrie was a golfer and I wanted

to understand why he was faster

and hitting harder than my other

opponents. I wanted to understand

and study Corrie better. It’s like in

chess: to see what they see, sit

where they sit.”

After retiring in August, the 6ft 6in

star is looking forward to his return

to the Home of Golf.

He said: “I will give it my best, and

I am sure I will be nervous on the

first tee. St Andrews is a very historic

town. I love history and will enjoy

my time there.

“The Old Course is the mecca of

golf, and it is an honour to play there

with the pros. I was super-duper

proud and excited to play in 2008.

Last time I played I didn’t hit any

spectators with my ball!”

Klitschko won 64 of his 69 fights

and at various times held the WBA,

IBF, WBO and IBO world heavy-

weight titles.

Old Course

Carnoustie

St Andrews is the Home of Golf and the Old Course is at its heart. The most famous golf course in the world, it measures 7,305 yards, has a par of 72 and radiates a sense of history. As the weather changes, it can be benign one day and a mighty challenge the next, but throughout it remains the greatest stage on which golf is played.

Carnoustie is one of the toughest and most merciless links courses. At 7,394 yards with a par of 72, it has staged seven Open Championships. The Barry Burn which snakes across the course has produced many dramatic finishes.

In the event of inclement weather this sign will appear on all of the scoreboards. If play is suspended a siren will sound. You must seek shelter immediately. Avoid open areas, hilltops, high places, isolated trees, golf carts and wire fences. In the event of an emergency evacuation please listen carefully for announcements and follow the instructions given by Officials.
