FLEX APPEAL This insurance firm goes all out to ensure its policies are family-friendly—and it succeeds. About 95% of staffers used flex last year. Compressed workweeks, job-sharing, part-time work and telecommuting are also popular. Those working at least 20 hours weekly are eligible for health insurance.

CHILD-CARE KUDOS An on-site child-care center at headquarters and one at the Enfield,

CT, office serve a total of 153 employee children. Six near-site centers give parents even more child-care options. If cost is a concern, no wor-ries: Most slots are offered on a sliding fee scale.

LEAVES WE LOVE New moms can take the first 3 weeks off at 100% of pay and another 3 weeks at 60% of pay. And in some cases they can phase back into their jobs on a part-time schedule.

WHAT WORKS The Educational Reim-bursement Program, which pays 100 percent of most tuition and fees for coursework and degree programs at accredited colleges and universities, provides generous benefits for both full-time and part-time employees. In ad-dition, MassMutual’s onsite University@M of-

fers business-related courses each trimester that employees are encouraged to attend for their professional development. No time to go to a training class? The Class can come to you. MassMutual’s library of Web-based training courses provided by SkillSoft and LOMALearn helps employees meet training and professional needs and can be accessed from work or from a home computer. Also, to fit a mother’s telecom-muting schedule or flexible work arrangement, employees can host or attend select meetings through WebEx, MassMutual’s interactive meet-ing website at www.massmutual.webex.com.

PLUM PERKS For those at the home office, errands couldn’t be easier: There’s an on-site dry cleaner, shoe repair shop and gift shop.

METHODOLOgYThe application The list of companies selected for the 2007 Working Mother 100 Best Companies was based on an exten-sive application completed by each firm. The application includes detailed questions about the workforce, compensation, child-care and flexibility programs, leave policies and more. It also checks the usage, availability and tracking of programs, as well as the accountability of managers who oversee them. What’s measured Seven areas are measured and scored: workforce profile, compensation, child care, flexibility, time off and leaves, family-friendly programs, company culture.Making the 100 Best Companies list After we finalize the list of 100 winners, our writers and editors report on each com-pany, using the application, supplemental material sent in by the companies and interviews with company representatives. Fact-checkers verify all the information in the profiles with the companies. The names of applicants that do not make the list are kept confidential. All companies, including those that don’t make the 100 Best, receive feedback showing how they compared to other applicants. This year’s winners The company profiles, culled from the applications, reflect 2006 data. With the help of NetX Inc., an inde-pendent survey research firm based in Columbus, NJ, we validate the applications for completeness and then tabulate the scores. For this year’s 100 Best, we gave particular weight to flexibility and family-friendly programs.
