Panama City Central America’s most attractive capital city was founded in 1519 by Spanish explorers and rebuilt in the late 17th century. Many historic structures remain today within the designated UNESCO World Heritage site—Panama Viejo, the oldest European settlement in the America’s, and Casco Antiguo, with its cobbled streets and spectacular ruins of 16th-century cathedrals. Near the Panama Canal, the Miraflores Locks Visitor Center provides an ideal observation area and opportunity to see how the locks operate, and the new Biodiversity Museum, designed by architect Frank Gehry of Guggenheim fame, showcases the ecological significance of Panama’s exotic flora and fauna.

Coiba National Park, Panama Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, Coiba National Park and its Special Zone of Marine Protection has emerged as a rich laboratory for studying coral, mammals and plants. In addition to 69 species of fish, humpback, orca, sperm and Cuvier’s beaked whales are known to move through the marine park’s perimeter, and large marlin may be seen leaping from the water. Formed by a steep volcanic outcropping over millions of years, Granito de Oro, which means “granules of gold” to reflect its purity, is an islet known as the “live aquarium of Coiba” for its vast array of exquisite marine life such as parrotfish and orange-sided triggerfish.

The largest island in Central America and once an isolated prison, Isla Coiba hosts terrestrial wonders—untouched rainforest, rugged headlands, pristine white-sand beaches and mangrove

thickets—the perfect environment for the evolution of new and endemic subspecies and for the protection of endangered species.

Tens of thousands of laborers worked—and sacrificed—to complete the largest engineering endeavor of the time.

In February 1915, the 580-foot-long S.S. Kroonland was the largest passenger ship to date to transit the Panama Canal.

Opened in 1914, the “greatest liberty ever taken with nature” cost over $400 million and took 33 years to complete. Spanning 50 miles and cutting through the Great Divide, this historic engineering feat changed the world, opening up new channels of international trade, allowing ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in a fraction of the time. The French attempted to build a sea-level canal in the late 19th century, but lack of engineering expertise and disease halted the project.

After extensive political discourse and U.S. involvement in Panama’s independence, the project was turned over to the U.S., who saw the canal’s strategic advantages, and construction began in 1903, during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. Almost 100,000 workers were involved, among them French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin. When completed in 1914, it was considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world. One hundred years later, the Panama Canal has undergone a $5.25-billion expansion, adding a third lane for cargo traffic and maintaining its status as the gateway to the world.
