1. IntroduCtIon
NAAM has taken the initiative to organize an exhibition and side events to commemorate
100 years of the establishment of the oil refinery in Curaao. Our aim is to inspire understanding and appreciationof the processes through which the refinery influenced our culture, communicate historical facts in an accurate way, foster a sense of involvement and ownership in our historical processes, provide an experiential understanding ofthe forces that shape our present and enter into dialogue with the past.
In 1915, Royal Dutch Shell decided to establish an oil refinery on Curaao which opened for production in 1918.The island, called isla intil by the Spanish colonizers, developed in a short period of time into what we now calldushi Krsou, a multi ethnic, relatively prosperous society.
The oil refinery stimulated an economic growth and different ethnic groups came to the island to work and sobecame Yui Krsou. Different industries emerged; the educational possibilities grew drastically, educating thechildren of all who live here.
It is important for Curaao, and especially the youth to understand Curaao the way it was.To be aware that the establishment of the oil refinery shaped the modern Curaao we know today.

2.1 PROJECT AIMS
Curaao has gone through many changes in the past 100 years. Many people take the resulting social and culturalreality as a given and do not see them in their historical context. Many people believe that our culture and society arethe way they are because of uncontrolled fate. The refinerys 100th anniversary is a good moment for us to reflecton how we became the Curaao of 2015 and specifically how the refinery shaped our community.
We want to target the general population of Curaao, tourists and especially schools, from Primary Education toUniversities and technical schools. We aim to: Inspire understanding and appreciation of the processes through which the refinery influenced our culture Communicate historical facts in an accurate way
Foster a sense of involvement and ownership in our historical processes Provide an experiential understanding of the forces that shape our present Enter into dialogue with the past
Target audienceThe project 100 Aa Refineria na Korsou/ Isla den Nos Bida will be of course aimed at the whole Curaaoanpopulation, which we want to make aware of the importance of this history.
We want to specify the following target groups: The Curaaoan population who is very aware of the role of the refinery in the past, with a directconnection. Workers and other affiliates and their nuclear family.
The Curaaoan population who is to some degree aware of the role the refinery had in the past, without a direct connection.
The Curaaoan population who is very aware of the role of the refinery in the present, with adirect connection. Workers and other affiliates and their nuclear family.
The Curaaoan population who is too young to be aware of the role of the refinery:Youngsters and schoolchildren
Immigrants not connected to the refinery and other visitors

4.1 Topics in the Exhibition 100 aa refinera na Krsou - Isla den Nos Bida
In a contemporary way, the curator Felix the Rooy will show the history and impact op 100 years oil refinery inCuraao, using images, texts and objects obtained on the island. The exhibition will address the past, the presentand the future. Starting with Curaao before the establishment of the oil refinery we will travel to the present, creating space for audience input of ideas for the future.Themes that will be addressed:- migration and housing- culture, education, sports- economic developments- technology
4.1.1 Curaao before the oil refinery Before the establishment of the oil refinery, Curaao was called a necessitous colony, with much poverty
and bad economic conditions. The agricultural Curaao from before the abolition of slavery in 1863 wasbeginning to experience small industrial developments.
4.1.2 Oil refinery on Curaao: CPIM / Shell from 1915- 1969 Shell has been the largest employer in the islands history since 1918. Of the 44,344 inhabitants in 1929,
10,924 worked directly for the oil industry. This number peaked in 1952, with 12,631 employees. The refinery was an important source of fuel for allied forces in the Second World War.
Economically, the refinery has been the mainstay of Curaao since 1915.
4.1.3 The island flourished economically Different cultures established themselves in Curaao, and became Yui Krsouthus contributing to the special culture of Curaao in major ways. Many other industries developed, the educational system ex-
panded, the natural resources changed drastically.
4.1.4 Oil refinery on Curaao: Shell from 1969- 1985 Curaao experienced an economic downturn in the early 1980s. Shells refinery on Curaao operated with
significant losses from 1975 to 1979, and again from 1982 to 1985. In 1985, after a presence of 70 years,
Royal Dutch Shell decided to end its activities on Curaao.

4.1.5 Oil refinery on Curaao: PDVSA from 1985 The settlement with Shell for one guilder in 1985 and the lease of the refinery to PDVSA ended this period
in the history of the island. PDVSAs established itself on the island 30 years ago providing continuing tothe refinery industry and being a vital part of the community.
4.1.6 The future The exhibition will focus on the history of the refinery and its impact on the whole society. Our aim is to
provide information and inspiration to enrich the discussions about the future of the island.
4.1.7 Artistic impressions
Throughout the exhibition artistic work inspired by the refinerys presence will be shown. This will bequotes from literary works, segments of music and bi-dimensional en tri-dimensional art work.
4.1.8 Languages The project will be produced in four languages, with Papiamentu and English being the main languages
of the on-site exhibit. In Dutch and Spanish a booklet will be available. The project website will have extra in depth information in all four languages to make it more readily
available to the World.
4.1.9 Opening hours and period We want the exhibition to stay open for a period of 6 months. Starting august 2016.The opening hours must be as broad as possible, including the weekends.

4.5 Art ExhibitionThe presence of the refinery has always inspired visual artists. Themes like labor, pollution, migration tangled tothe refinery has been visualized. We aim to stimulate (young) visual artist on the island to create work focusing onthe present and future of the refining industry and the island. We will select works to be displayed in a separateArt Exhibition Venue.
