FOREWORD

This deployment was basically the same as any deployment of

the Battalion, we worked hard, played hard, and experienced some

unpleasant moments. There were brief moments of glory for some of t

us as various commendations were handed out. These impressions

are only a few that were packed into this deployment.

This Cruise Book furnishes the outline of a story as we turn the

pages, the rest is up to the individual. The men who remain in this t

Battalion will continue to keep up the high standard of achievement

while striving for improvement. The men who have left the Battalion

will go their separat't ways using the knowledge and experience

gained on this deployment.

It is not today that you will appreciate this Cruise Book. Tomor-

row, when it is not to easy to think back to 1962-63, you will treasure

the memories this book has stored for you.

Lost his life in a vehicle occident while on convoy duty from Bangkok to Nokorm Ponom.

Also, we pay tribute to those of the U.S. Air Force who, while serving our Battalion by bring-ing in supplies and rations, lost their lives in the crash of their C-123 on 12 April 1963, and the two Thai women who lost their lives as a result of being struck by the plane.

This Cruise Book covers accomplishments by MCB THREE which have done much to

perpetuate the illustrious reputation of the Seabees - a reputation that has become almost

legendary. During the deployment, the Main Body constructed an airfield, starting from scratch,

in the iso lated northeast tip of Thailand. Detachment X. Ray, in addition to providing logistic

support to the Main Body, brought about a re-construction of Camp Kinser on Okinawa that

greatly surpassed original expectations.

The achievements during the past year have proven the truth that the greatest asset of an

organization is its people. But sheer numbers ore not enough . The value of that asset is multipled

according to their enthusiastic spirit - assum ing it to be well directed. The officers and men of

this battalion have shown energy and interest during this deployment that is a tribute to the

"Con Do" spirit of the Seabees; often doing what hod appeared impossible.

Each of us con be justifiably proud of MCB THREE based on the deep pride and satisfaction

of accomplishments under challenging conditions.

The "Values" of MCB THREE

There are six "values" that have significantly affected MCB THREE in the past two years:

(l) Respect for the individual-the belief in the worth of each individual;

(2) Opportunity for participation-the right to influence decisions by everyone affected by the decisions;

(3) Security-knowledge by the individual of what is expected of him and how he measures up to expectations with a forewarning of changes, and consistent discipline whether favorable on unfavorable to the individual;

(4) Independence-opportunity for participation, assuming responsibility and the right of appeal;

(5) Belongingness-esprit~e corps;

(6) Sense of success-feeling of achievement and recognition.

Command policy has been formulated with these "values" in mind. Programs have been initiated and emphasized based on these "values." It is well-recognized that the strength of a battalion is the strength of the men. In MCB THREE the strength of the men during any period of time is dependent on the degree that each of the above "values" affects our conduct, actions, and d.ecisions.
