Ten Things Everyone Should Know
About Providence Summerbridge
1Providence Summerbridge operates year-round and includes four academic and leadership development components: a six-week summer program, an after school program, a Saturday program, and a tutoring program. Students make a two-year, year-round
commitment during their 7th and 8th grade years.
2We recruit students from every sixth grade classroom
in Providence Public Schools. We base admissions decisions on motivation, academic and leadership
potential, and need.
3Providence Summerbridge is 100% free for its
students. We provide transportation, meals, books, and materials—everything. The program targets students who would not otherwise have access to comprehensive out-of-school opportunities.
4Providence Summerbridge’s academic classes are creative, skills-based, and hands-on. Instead of
suffering from summer learning loss, students return to school in the Fall motivated and prepared to excel.
5Providence Summerbridge features a
student to teacher ratio of 8:1.
6The teachers at Providence Summerbridge are
high school and college students. Many are also graduates of the program.
7Providence Summerbridge includes more than
academics. We offer a curriculum on high school options, leadership development, and special events
such as Olympics Day and Career & College Day, and a culture that values spirit, safe play, and
healthy competition.
8We provide one-on-one high school counseling to
each of our 8th grade students to ensure they make informed choices about the college-preparatory
high school that will be the best fit for them.
9We hire professional teachers to serve as Mentor Teachers. This is an outstanding professional development opportunity
for local educators.
10Since 1992 Providence Summerbridge has sustained
a model public/private partnership with the Wheeler School. Wheeler serves as Providence
Summerbridge’s host and provides about $85,000 in in-kind support annually.
