10 Reasons why M.G. Marg is known as the Heart of Gangtok

1. M.G. Marg is named after Mahatma Gandhi – Marg is a Hindi word which

stands for Road. This road is named after the renowned leader of the Indian

independence movement, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi honorably

known as Mahatma Gandhi. In this honor a statue of Gandhi ji has been

placed at the entrance of the Market.

2. Litter Free area – As one enters M.G.Marg, they are greeted by a sign board

which reads 'Welcome to M.G. Marg, Spit and Litter Free Zone'. Sikkim is

Considered as to be the first litter and spit free zone in India. There are also

sign boards which convey Smoking as an offence.

3. Vehicle free zone – M.G.Marg is meant for pedestrians only. No Vehicles

are allowed, thus people can freely move around various shops and

eateries. The no entry of vehicles makes it a pollution free space.

4. Environment Friendly - All the buildings and major shops are painted green

to support the Government’s green initiative and make Sikkim an

environment friendly state.

5. Wooden Benches – In the middle of the pathway there are wooden

benches lined up. One can sit there to relax and watch the hustle bustle of

the city or watch their kids play while they sit and have a snack.

6. Mini Garden – The pathway is divided into two halves by a very well

maintained mini garden with seasonal flowers, plants and Victorian styled

street lamps.

7. Shopping hub – The market place constitutes of numerous types of shops

from medicines to handicrafts, Cafeterias to Garment shops and also

Souvenirs. One has to be good at bargaining in order to crack a good deal,

thus making it a must visit place for people who love shopping. Shops are

open from 8am to 7pm and closed on Tuesdays.

8. Plastic free Zone – One of the first states to ban the use of plastic bags,

Sikkim implemented this rule as a part of the Trade Act that prohibits any

shopkeeper to hand out goods to consumers in plastic bags. On 3rd July,

2016, International Plastic Bag Free Day was celebrated in M.G. Marg by

the Zero Waste Himalaya Group. The campaign saw volunteers handing

out reusable cloth bags to people in M.G. Marg for a token amount.

9. Annual Gangtok Food and Culture festival – M.G. Marg witnesses the

Annual Gangtok Food and Culture festival organized by the Sikkim Tourism

department in December every year. The food culture of state is celebrated

and Tourists are welcomed by Sikkim’s multi-cultural cuisine in Titanic park.

A cultural show is also organized with a variety of traditional music and

dance performances, opposite the Tourism and Civil aviation department.

10. A place with ATMs & tourist information centers – M.G. Marg has the

Sikkim Tourist information centre where one can find important

information for tourists. The Tourism and Civil Aviation Department is also

situated there, from where visitors for Nathula Pass can apply for a permit

through a registered and recognized Travel Agency. There are also various

ATM machines and Banks available for locals and travelers.

A recent survey carried out by the NSSO (National Sample Survey Office) stated

Sikkim as the cleanest state in India. According to a latest report “Swachh

Survekshan Gramin 2016″, Sikkim scored the highest ranking of 98.2 per cent on

a scale of 100.
