Chat Reference:
Platform: MeeboEase of
implementation: Very easy – cut and paste HTML
Procedure: Staffed as much as we can from 10-6:00 M-Th, 9-5 F.
Goals: Expand reference service and outreach

Chat Reference
Outcomes:Students: Students would either chat in the
conventional manner or leave a message. Generally questions pertaining to circulation or availability of items, catalog/database access, citation formats, bibliographic tools. Dorm students were among chat ref users.
Faculty: Lengthier questions pertaining to course reserves, availability of materials, Interlibrary Loan.
Unaffiliated users: Questions about facility. Public use of library, etc.

Chat Reference
What we’ve learned:That our patrons would use chat reference! About 1/3 of questions were asked off-hours, either before
8am or after 9pm. Most of these patrons left contact information which lead to follow-up e-mail reference. This gave us insight into our patron’s study habits.
Actions: Continue chat reference and continue monitoring trends and
examining what data we get from it. Use is still pretty limited so it is very unlikely that we will
expand to a “24/7” service anytime in the near future. The last message of the Spring 2008 Semester – 5/21/08 [14:27] mimi1987: YOU GUYS ARE DOING A GREAT JOB.

Chat Reference[17:37] meeboguest550173: Good afternoon, I've got a question.[17:37] sccc_library: How can I help you?
[17:38] meeboguest550173: Well, I'm curious to know. Are there books on topics pertaining to "going green"?[17:39] meeboguest550173: Specifically, I'd like to know the benefits of Organic, non-industrialized produce and machinery.[17:40] sccc_library: We do have a number of books on "green" technologies. I will have to perform a search for any items as specific as you are looking. One moment please.[17:42] meeboguest550173: Excuse me a moment; is there a way in which I could visit the library and implore there?[17:42] sccc_library: Certainly.
[17:43] sccc_library: The library is open to all, however you must be a county resident or student to check out materials
[17:44] sccc_library: I am finding a few titles on organic produce and the benefits of organic produce
[17:44] sccc_library: As well as one title, that is checked out, specifically on the dangers of industrialized farming
[17:44] meeboguest550173: Well, I am a student here at S.C.C.C.; I reside in the residence hall. Could I come by when I'm free and inquire?[17:45] sccc_library: Certainly. We are open until 9pm M-Th, and 5pm Fri.
[17:47] meeboguest550173: What keywords would you recommend I search? This information will be utilised for a After Dinner Speech.[17:49] sccc_library: I would recommend you search the catalog using the phrase "organic food" (without the quotes), and the phrase "organic agriculture" (again without the quotes). Make sure you are performing a keyword search and not a browse search as well[17:50] meeboguest550173: Alright then, thank you.[17:50] sccc_library: You are welcome.
[17:50] meeboguest550173: Have a good evening, and thank you again.[17:50] sccc_library: Take care and happy searching.

Blogs/RSS feeds:Platform: TumblrEase of implementation: Very easy – customize templatesProcedure: New Book Blog/RSS feed updated weekly.Goals: Increase awareness of library collections, increase usage.
10 October 2008 Matt Smith
Blogs/RSS Feeds
Outcomes: Estimate 7 subscriptions external to the library with 65 regular readers. Considering the target population size, that’s not so bad.
What we’ve learned:On a monthly basis: Returning visitors account for
between 1/3 to ½ of total visitors.Peak semester page loads equal 3-4 times
the total number of visitors; thus the blog is interesting enough to get viewers to look at multiple pages of entries. Overall average is 2.8 pages per visit.
Actions: Continue observation of usage. Additional promotion of blog/rss feed. Considering making entries interactive – allow comments.

Subject Page Enhancements:
Platform: Google Custom SearchEase of implementation: Easy to moderate. Custom java script and HTML were used, but are not necessary.Procedure: Create GCS account and populate the search engine with appropriate websites.Goals: Increase student use of academically appropriate web sources by providing access through a familiar and easy-to-use interface.

Subject Page Enhancements
Outcomes: Too early to tell. These were designed to aid specific, recurring assignments so use will be finite.
What we’ve learned: Not much as of yet.
Actions: Promote the use of these search tools and track usage data.

Can be time-intensive initially.Procedure: Upload (batch w/ SS assistance) and maintain serials records via SS Client Center. Requires regular maintenance.Goals: Increase use of print (and microfilm) holdings through improved discovery tools.
10 October 2008 Matt Smith

ILLiad & IDS:Platform: ILLiadEase of implementation: Varies. Easy for us, but had to function as a G.C..Procedure: Read the thorough documentation provided for both ILLiad and IDS AND follow it.Goals: Increase use of ILL service and improve the user experience via IDS participation.

ILLiad & IDS
Outcomes: 2007-8 was the implementation year and not a good enrollment year. So far this year we are on pace to have three times the number of requests as last year and we haven’t had a significant number of new accounts created.
What we’ve learned: If you can get a student (or faculty) registered to use ILLiad they will use ILL, often extensively.
Actions: Continuous promotion, and training on the use of ILLiad.
