HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING 2

Teacher Appreciation Week

V ocation: When we hear about vocation, what comes to our mind is priests, deacons, religious men and women and even lay consecrated. We can add to the list, in this time of pandemic, all

the heath care workers that are on the front line of the battle with this atrocious virus. But I would al-so add to the list all our beloved teachers and their assistants; they are the ones making sure that our children receive a good education. Yes, being a teacher is also a vocation, but who is our teachers' Teacher? The best teacher of our time is undoubtedly Jesus. By looking at Him, our teachers follow their plans in order to transmit knowledge to our children. The best way is not instructing or correct-ing but living their vocation as a teacher with total commitment. Together with them, we must imitate Jesus, or better, allow him to live in us, and by living in this way, Jesus becomes the Teacher.

In the Gospel, Jesus was called Teacher by his disciples no less than twelve times. On Holy Thursday Jesus told them: “You call me Teacher and Lord and rightly so because I am. So, if I, Lord and

Teacher have washed your feet, you also should wash one an-other’s feet”. The best lesson He gave us is giving His life for each one of us by dying on the Cross.

So, let’s reach out to our teachers in a special way, remembering them in our prayers and thanking them for their dedication to our children’s education. I will conclude with the words of Bishop Zubik who said: “I wouldn’t be here today; I couldn’t be doing what I’m doing if it weren’t for the people who are dedicated to helping not only develop the mind, but also the hearts and the souls of their students.”

Happy Birthday to Bishop Winter!

Bishop William J. Winter, former pas-tor of Sacred Heart Parish, will celebrate his 90th birthday on May 20, 2020.

Happy birthday to His Excellency!!!

If you wish to send him a birthday card, his current address is: Most Reverend Bishop William Winter St. John Vianney 2600 Morange Rd, #302 Pittsburgh, PA 15205

PRAYER FOR MOTHERS

Heavenly Father, from the beginning you have chosen to entrust the human person to mothers in a special way. We thank and praise you for the gift of mothers; for their tenderness, care, and compassion, for their intuition and encouragement, for commitment and sacrifice. Bless all mothers this day. Keep, strengthen, and refresh them in your loving care. May they be blessed by our open-hearted love and gratitude.

Amen.

3 HAPPENING IN OUR GROUPING

Announcing the Proposal for New Mass Times In order to accommodate all postponed weddings and to move forward with the Mass schedule changes when we become one parish, and after consultation with Pastoral Staff and Pastoral Council members, we want to present to all of our parishioners at Sacred Heart and Saint Raphael parishes a new weekend Mass schedule that will are planning to go into effect July 1, 2020 or as soon as public Masses are reinstated in the Diocese:

4:00 PM on Saturdays at Saint Raphael 8:30 AM on Sundays at Saint Raphael 11:00 AM on Sundays at Sacred Heart 7:45 PM on Sundays at Sacred Heart

In the spirit of On Mission for the Church Alive!, having four Masses per weekend will allow our churches to be fuller for more vibrant liturgies and it will accommo-date the reality of fewer priests being in this Grouping as time goes on. This proposal offers all our parishioners an opportunity to provide feedback. To do so, you can either submit your feedback through our website: https://bestpghparish.org/new-mass-schedule-proposal or by email at [email protected]. Parishioners will have three weeks to respond. Your feedback is very important to us before a final deci-sion can be made. Please note that we are obligated to submit a request for Mass Time Changes to our Re-gional Vicar, Bishop Waltersheid. As Regional Vicar, he will also review the surrounding parishes, taking into consideration their Mass times so that there are convenient times for our people to attend Masses elsewhere if these Mass times are not convenient. This proposal was planned according to the Pastoral Council Survey that was conducted during all Masses and online in January. It also provides for the large number of couples requesting to be married in both of our beautiful churches. Many couples were turned away because of the limited times Nuptial Masses could be scheduled on a given Saturday. Weddings will now be able to be scheduled between 10 am until 4:30 pm at Sacred Heart Church and between 10 am until 2 pm at Saint Raphael. Please note that schedul-ing weddings allows us an opportunity to minister to the wonderful couples choosing to be married in the grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony. Please let us know your opinion about the Mass Schedule we are proposing. You have every right for us to know your thoughts about this schedule. As in any proposal, if we do not hear from you, we can on-ly interpret that means you support these times.

Who is Our Lady of Fátima? The story begins about 70 miles north of Lisbon in the tiny village of Fátima, Portugal, on May 13, 1917. On that day, near the village, The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three young peasant children: Lucia and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta, ages 7, 10 and 9. The children described the Virgin Mary as "the Lady more brilliant than the Sun" and reported a prophecy that prayer would lead to an end to World War I. The Virgin Mary appeared every 13th of the following months near Fátima or Cova di Iria, until the 13th of October, when she would perform a miracle so that all may believe. On that day, a huge crowd, possibly between 30,000 and 100,000, including reporters and photographers, gathered at Fátima. What happened then became known as the "Miracle of the Sun". According to witnesses, after a period of rain, the dark clouds broke and the sun ap-peared as an opaque, spinning disc in the sky, casting multicolored lights across the landscape, the people, and the surrounding clouds. The Sun was then described to have danced before zigzagging back to its normal position. People reported that their previ-ously wet clothes suddenly became completely dry. It was not until May 1922 that Bishop Correia da Silva, in a pastoral letter, set up a com-mission of inquiry. In October 1930, he declared that the apparitions at Fátima were "worthy of belief," and approved public devotion to the Blessed Virgin under the title Our Lady of Fátima. Pope Pius XII, on December 8, 1942, in a ceremony in Saint Pe-ter’s Basilica in Rome, consecrated humanity to Mary’s Immaculate Heart. He carried out a similar consecration of Russia in 1952. On May 13, 1981, following an assassina-tion attempt, Pope John Paul II credited Our Lady of Fátima with saving his life. During the Jubilee Year, on May 13,2000, he beatified Jacinta and Francisco. It was during these beatification ceremonies that all the details of the third part of the Fátima secret were revealed, the third millennium was entrusted to Our Lady of Fátima. On May 13, 2017, during the centennial of the first apparition, Pope Francis canonized Jacinta and Francisco; they are the youngest non-martyr saints declared in the history of the Church. The Feast of Our Lady of Fátima is on May 13th.
