    Knowing Me, Knowing You

Borrowing from the title of the famous ABBA hit song, let the

following be a curiosity-filler so you know who is this fledgling driver

    of the parish train.

My full name is TERENCE NUEVA. I am happy to be called

    TERRY or FR TERRY.

I am the youngest of three siblings born in the island of Negros in the

Philippines. I was ordained in 1983, having been supported by the

Columbans and trained by the Dominicans.

I came to Australia in 2000, on an agreement between my home

diocese of Bacolod and the Archdiocese of Perth, to be chaplain to

the growing Filipino Community there. After barely a year in the

chaplaincy, I volunteered to be sent to the parish of Southern Cross,

where the farming ends and mining begins. It was there that I was

more or less initiated into the Australian way of life and the

challenges of living in the sticks, where I had to travel vast distances,

just to say mass for 2 to 5 people.

I took my oath as a naturalised Australian in the country town of

Kulin in WA in 2007, and soon applied to work in the Archdiocese of

    Brisbane.

Archbishop John Bathersby accepted me and sent me to

Maroochydore, where I was to work until the Nigerian priests would

arrive in the archdiocese. It took 6 years before Archbishop Mark

Coleridge asked me to move to Southport. Then in 2015, I was told

to take on the Filipino Chaplaincy and be based at Acacia Ridge,

which hadn’t had a parish priest for more than 10 years.

I began work in Acacia Ridge at the beginning of 2015 and

completed my 6-year term by the end of 2020. I told the archbishop

that Acacia Ridge needed new and younger blood and that I needed

a new environment to be reenergised and revitalised.

Here at St John’s Wood/The Gap, I am awed by the formidable

precedence of Sr Kari’s pastoral acumen and expertise. A senior

priest in Brisbane once asked what talent and skill I bring to the

parish. I said then, and I say it now, “talent and skill, I have nothing

to show, but I can assure you I will work as hard as my energies

allow and serve as diligently as the Spirit leads me”.

This satisfies half the title of this article - “Knowing Me.” I need to

hear the other half – “Knowing You” – for the parish train will not

    leave without you!

    Praying with Children

    Thank you!

On behalf of the St John’s Wood/The Gap Conference of St Vincent de Paul Society, thank you for your generous contributions in donations, gift cards, gifts, and food items to the 2020 Christmas Hamper Appeal. As you can see from the picture, the result was truly magnificent.

We delivered approximately 95 hampers which will bring much happiness to many families. And because of your generosity, we were able to deliver our excess goods to the Boonah Parish Conference to distribute to many needy families in that area.

We greatly appreciate your kindness, your trust and most importantly your commitment to our mission. We could not carry on our important work without your support.

Patrick Coleman, President St Vincent de Paul
