The capes at the boys & Girls Clubs are always flying for

anyone in need of a hero.

We don’t have staff. we have vision leaders. vision leaders guide youth in daily activities and help them develop future plans.

Our 2018 youth of the year, tavian gray, calls our vision leaders "superheroes." I think he’s right. Our annual report focuses on the heroes that work with our youth, those who support our programs, and the amazing young heroes who attend our clubs.

We all have times when we need a hero. At the boys & girls clubs of Hutchinson our capes may not be flashy but they’re always flying for any young person who needs our help.

Shemekia Green:Alumni Spotlight

Professional by day. . .

. . . hero at heart.

shemekia green joined the club at age 12 and remained a member until she graduated from high school in 2006. today she is a real estate agent and a licensed nurse. she joined the board of the Boys & girls club in 2018.What did you think about the Club when you first joined?I was a little nervous. I was a really shy kid. I came in and became a Keystone member so I had to become more outspoken, but once I got used to it and got warmed up I loved it. I was there every day.

What’s your favorite memory of the Club? Our teen group went to different colleges to visit and that was so fun to hang out with people that grew up together and we were making life choices together on what colleges we were going to attend and what we were going to do.

What do you hope to get out of being a board member?I feel like the Boys & Girls Club stayed dedicated to me and made sure I became someone, so I want to return that dedication and help another child or another youth.

What do you want the world to know about the club? It’s awesome. Take your kids there. They’ll learn something. It’s not just a place to play. You’re going to learn. You’re going to grow.

What are your defining characteristics?Intuition, resiliency and loyalty. . . They are not superpowers I was born with, but values that I learned from Boys & Girls Club. My personal brand is to be an everyday hero. I want to empower kids to overcome failures, uncover their potential, discover opportunities, and have the courage to try again.

Why are you committed to the Boys & Girls Club?I am loyal to the Club, because I can always count on the Club to provide Opportunities like camps, employment, field trips, job skills, mentors and above all friendships. The Club can count on me to be a voice for our members, a face for the kids that fill our halls, and the positive change in our community.

tabetha gray: teen director

tabetha gray became the teen director in 2017. she began working for our Club in 2006 while she completed her Elementary Education degree at Sterling College. This will be her 9th year of teaching with USD 308.

Your background is in teaching. What made you decide to serve youth in the out-of-school hours?

As an educator, you are the most influential adult in that young person’s life while they are in the classroom. Once the bell would ring for the end of school, I would have a classroom full of kids that just wanted to "hang out", to have a snack, and occasionally work on homework. The kids will indirectly tell you exactly what they need, they use their feet to lead them to where their hearts tell them to go. Spending time after school in a safe space brought down barriers with kids, allowed them to realize they have more common bonds than dividing factors.

What has been your most inspiring moment as Teen Director?

My most inspiring moments as Teen Director are when I can put the right people in the path of our members: mentors, Vision Leaders, teachers, coaches, community leaders, the HEROES that teens need. My goal is to make sure that our teens continue to have opportunities to be the very best version of themselves, the Boys & Girls Club Teen program is committed to ensuring that our teens leave our blue doors equipped with the courage to be resilient and the skills to be problem-solvers. The relationships the members have with our Teen Staff is unwavering, the members are very loyal and proud to be part of the boys & girls club team. Members are excited for the leadership framework that puts them on track to be a Vision Leader. Members becoming Vision Leaders is a pinnacle of achievement, our younger members thrive having their heroes in the hallways.
