10 INDUSTRIES THAT WILL BE DISRUPTED BY IBEACONS IN 2015
hello!
proximity retail solutions
What are beacons?
WHAT’S A BEACON?
WHAT’S A BEACON?• Beacon is „sea lantern” - it periodically emits unique signal
• Uses energy-saving Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) also called Bluetooth Smart, which enables it operate up to 1 year on a single watch battery
• It is also possible to read signal strenght, which enables proximity measurement with up to 5cm accuracy
• Beacons can emit signals up to 70 meters away.
BEACON COMMUNICATION
BEACON COMMUNICATION• They emit unique signal
• Smartphone app decides what action to take once in contact with the beacon
• App can act upon contact with beacon even if idle (eg. in minimized state)
• You can also use iOS devices like iPads and iPhones acting as beacons
• Ability to register for system notifications when devices enter and leave beacon region
• Estimation of proximity to the beacon with great accuracy
• Providing indoor navigation for users without GPS and/or wifi
• No need for wifi, 3G or GPS enabled on smartphone in order to communicate with beacons
What kinds of information do they transmit?
INFORMATION TRANSMITED BY BEACONS
• UUID - e.g.B9407F30-F5F8-466E-AFF9-25556B57FE6D
• Major / Minor fields
• that’s it :)
Beacons are dumm. You need „inteligent” receiver
WHAT CAN WE RECEIVE?
• UUID, Major, Minor
• RSSI - Received Singal Strength Indicator (depending on TXPower)
• Entry / exit to beacon zone
impressive? not quite.
and to make matters worse, it depends on bluetooth… meh.
SCALE OF IMPACT
• All Apple devices with iOS 7 (80% of currently active devices - around 600 milionów iPads and iPhones). In Poland - around 500.000 devices. 2014 the number will grow by 28% (according to Gartner)
• Android smartphones and tablets running OS 4.3 (Jelly Bean) and up - around 24% of devices, which means 250 million devices worldwide). 2014 roku this number will grow by 26% (according to Gartner)
• By 2015 we will have around 22.000.000 smartphones in Poland
• BLE technology is currently present in all new iOS, Android and Windows Phone operating systems
• BLE - technology enabling communication with beacons - due to its low power consumption will probably be enabled by default in new versions of smartphone OS’es
• Big brands using beacons: Macy’s, American Eagle, Apple, Best Buy, JCPenney, NFL, Old Navy, Target
Why do we need beacons?
They do not upload anything to Internet
They do not download anything from Internet
They do not communicate with each other
…but they give interactions a local context.
Interaction with users is conveyed through a mobile device (smartphone, tablet)
Their strength comes from integration of BLE with
mobile ecosystem
after entering beacon range, mobile OS can „wake up”
specific application
application can register to receive notifications upon
entry or exit from beacon zone
that’s how we can learn which applications that we already
have can become helpful in our local context
apps, knowing our context, can execute certain actions
(e.g. adding points to our loyalty card
upon entering a store)
Example implementations?
1. Retail

current problems with beacons
You need to have an app working with specific beacons in your vicinity
Bluetooth / Location services enabled
Abuse of push notifications
Limited location precision
what the future might bring?
• beacons cost $1 or less and become further miniaturized• no need to turn on bluetooth - ble constantly on• no need for battery - beacons charge using fluctuactions
of electromagnetic field• iOS 8 reccomends applications in our vicinity, aiding
discovery• Android and Windows Phone follow Apple and they all
introduce a common compatible set of beacon features• beacons are mounted by default in everyday items like
coffee machines or traffic lights• they can communicate with each other• a common inter-device communication protocol is
defined• we can create rules for devices depending on our
location and preferences

1 thing worth remembering about beacons after viewing this presentation
They enable us to assign digital attributes to physical objects
