Ice Lanterns Take advantage of the cold weather by making beautiful ice lanterns that will be sure to light up any room or sidewalk this holiday season! Observe water’s unique properties as you create your lanterns. Enjoy the icy glow before the temperatures start to rise. TEKS: SCI 1.5B Predict and identify changes in materials caused by heating and cooling, such as ice melting, water freezing, and water evaporating. SCI 2.5B Compare changes in materials caused by heating and cooling. SCI 2.5C Demonstrate that things can be done to materials to change their physical properties, such as cutting, folding, sanding, and melting. SCI 2.6A Investigate the effects on an object by increasing or decreasing amounts of light, heat, and sound energy, such as how the color of an object appears different in dimmer light or how heat melts butter. SCI 3.5C Predict, observe, and record changes in the state of matter caused by heating or cooling. Materials: A cup of rocks, pebbles, beans, or any other small objects to act as weights Battery operated tea light candle Decorative pieces (e.g. pom poms, pipe cleaners, beads, glitter) Food coloring Freezer (or just place your lantern outside if the temperature is below zero!)
